No matter how many new video game franchises come along, it’s still some of the earliest console games which have the most popular gaming characters of all time. Take, for instance, Mario and Mega Man. Both released nearly 30 years ago (yikes, I feel really old), these iconic gaming characters have grown up alongside those of us who grew up playing video games. If you’d like a constant reminder of these classic characters, then you might want to add one of these handmade gaming mosaics to your home.

Michael Crow of Mike’s Mosaics created these Mario and Mega Man mosaics using glazed terracotta and ceramic tiles, and they look awesome. I love that Mario is wearing his Tanooki look, though I think he’d have trouble getting off the ground with all the added weight of the tile and concrete backing board.

Mega Man looks mighty fine too, sporting his classic blue costume.

Mario is really substantial, measuring in at 27.5″ x 23.25″, while Mega Man is a bit smaller at 12.5″ x 15.5″. Since both have been sealed, they’re okay for indoor or outdoor use. I’d be so thrilled with these guys in my garden instead of gnomes (hint-hint). Mario is priced at $250 (USD), and Mega Man is going for $200. Both can be found over at Mike’s Mosaics Etsy Shop. Mike will also make custom mosaics of your favorite character on request.

Are you the type of gamer who enjoys playing retro games, especially the ones that you loved when you were younger? Well check out Mega Man X, which was just released for the iPhone and iPod Touch (sorry no iPad version yet.) I remember playing Mega Man X on the SNES console for hours and now you can do the same on your iPhone.

Capcom announced yesterday that Mega Man X is now available from the iTunes App Store. The classically challenging 2D action platformer will have you ripping your hair out, thanks to its unforgiving bosses. You’ll get improved graphics and an easy mode for all you newbies.

It’s not an exact port of the original Super Nintendo game, but it’s the best you’ll be able to do on your iPhone (unless you jailbreak it and run an SNES emulator). Mega Man X is available right now at the iTunes App Store for $4.99.

And if you don’t know why you would want to play yet another old game instead of the latest console game, watch this.

While I personally wasn’t that into Duck Hunt, the classic shooting game on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, I have to say that this piece of art that combines pixel art with traditional art is lots of fun.

Etsy contributor Dpad’s art lets you show off your love of retro games as well as your appreciation of art at the same time. He combines traditional art materials with pixel tiles made from old book covers to make his art. Unfortunately, the Duck Hunt one has sold, but he’s got many more similar types of art in his store. The piece sold for $120, but he has other smaller works as cheap as $40 bucks.

Dpad has also got Mario and Mega Man mosaics made out of similar materials. Between the bunch, the Duck Hunt one has got more style, but I like the Mega Man and Mario ones better because I actually liked playing those games more.

It’s called Game On and it’s a funny and educational animation created by the Leicestershire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership in the UK. It’s a parody of the 8-bit hero Mega Man. I spent countless hours on those platformers on the NES, but never learned anything about sex by playing them.
Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It’s a funny way to let kids know about safe sex. I don’t know how effective it will be though, since most retro gamers are pretty old by now and should already know better.

Have you ever had video game-like dreams? Mike aka OrinCreed had one such dream. Fortunately, he and his friends were able to translate his dream into a video. Mike says I Dream in Retro is “based heavily on a dream I had that was caused by a long day of playing NES, SNES, and Genesis. A lot of the animation is true to the dream with a few changes to keep it interesting.” As if a video game dream wasn’t interesting enough!

As the start screen suggests, Mike’s dream consists of him traveling to different video game levels, using different video game mechanics and weapons. Exciting, eh? Here’s the true-to-dream story:

I’m sure I played that penguins with balloons game when I was a kid, but I can’t remember what it’s called. Anyway I wish Mike would dream in HD next time. Check out the link below for a high quality version of the clip.

Mega Man is one of the classic video game series and has a loyal following, which of course Capcom has capitalized on by releasing about 12 and a half billion Mega Man games in the last 12 years or so. Since every Mega Man game is filled with level bosses that the Blue Bomber must defeat and go Peter Petrelli on, you can imagine how hard it must be for Capcom’s character designers to come up with a new boss as the years – and sequels – go by.

Itching for a classic platforming game? Why not revisit the original Super Mario Bros.? Oh sure, you’ve finished it tons of times, but that’s with Mario. Now you can adventure on the Mushroom Kingdom with Link, Samus, Simon Belmont, Mega Man and – this is just so unfair – Bill from Contra in Super Mario Crossover. I just played the game and I still can’t believe it’s real, and it’s free!

The game was made by Jay Pavlina, aka explodingRabbit, and man did Jay create one hell of an homage. Each of the characters retain their own moves or weapons – Samus can turn into a ball and set bombs, Mega Man can slide and charge up his Buster, and the cruel Bill unleashes the Spread gun if he gets a Fire Flower. Did you read what I just said? The Spread gun. In Mario.

As if that wasn’t enough, Jay added the soundtrack from the characters’ respective games. I tell you, playing Super Mario with the Zelda soundtrack egging me on was so much fun.

I don’t how else to say this, but the MegaMan Effect is a very…Windowish application, but I sure am glad it’s available to us Mac users. When it’s turned on, every app that you launch gets the Mega Man II level boss introduction. Yes, 8-bit music included.

It’s QUICKTIME MAN! Able to launch in frameless window mode! His weakness? Knock out his Perian cannon and he won’t be able to play mkv files anymore!

Someone should integrate this into Quicksilver, Launchy and all other app launchers. MegaMan Effect was made by Mike Zornek and is a free download. Thank you Mr. Zornek, you just made my day.

Footage of Mega Man 10, the upcoming retro-sequel taken at the recently concluded CES 2010 has popped up on the internets. That’s just one of the tidbits you can gobble up to satisfy your Blue Bomber cravings if you read the feedback from the lucky bloggers who got some hands-on time with the trial version.

Mega Man 10 will be released on March via WiiWare, the PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade. If you want more Mega Man 10 – of course you do, why would you want less? – check out TMMN’s hands-on impressions and other footage.

At least, the Mega Man mod for Doom 2–yes, Doom 2–is adorable in theory. The little blue guy himself is pretty adorable, sure, and the color palette we’re treated to here certainly makes this the most cheerful death match. But look deeper. You’re one Mega Man killing other representations of your little blue avatar. Cute? Or really kind of creepy?

This cute/creepy mod is still in the early stages, undergoing some of its first tests. Creator Mike Hill warns that the mod is as yet rather unbalanced and that everything is subject to change. Has any of that prevented the masses from throwing down in a Mega Man death match of their own? Of course not–could you resist such a chance?

With copies of Doom 2 available for a pittance, you probably owe it to yourself to give this one a download.

Mega Man fan Nicholas may not have scored the top spot in Capcom Unity’s Mega Man tribute contest, but he has certainly won my heart with his colorful and pixelated light-up figure.

Now, at this point, you may be thinking “colorful? huh?” I know, the two shades of blue does not a rainbow make. But not only does this particular little Mega Man glow oh-so-brightly, his color scheme can be changed as well. Sometimes, you just have to power up.

The tiny (less than an inch and a half!) Mega Man LED fashion plate was made simply, from construction paper and plastic from CD cases, which means you can do this yourself if you can handle a little pixel art (and also put in the LEDs).

Last month, Capcom held a Mega Man tribute contest to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the release of Mega Man 9 on the Wii. They requested fans to submit anything that showed their love for the blue bomber, with the best tribute winning a Mega Man 9 press kit, the one with an SNES cartridge for a case. The contest is now over, and the top 30 picks are being shown at Capcom Unity. The top 10 picks aren’t posted yet, but there are already quite a few gems to be found from #30 to #11. I leave it up to you to decide if the drawing below, which got the 29th spot, is one of those gems:

Dawwwwwwww. It was probably made by a kid. Here’s #22, Mega Man’s Achilles Heel:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

And, my favorite (outside of the remaining ten), #14:

Simple but spot-on, and anyone who’s played any of the bajillion offspirings of the series will understand. There’s quite a few more picks, like the Mega Man cookie or the insane Mega Man collection. I hope the top ten are worthy of their places.
