Level Down: Minimalist Video Game Character Art

Compared to 15 pixel videos of games, these minimalist prints of video game characters are much more recognizable. Of course it helps that the characters shown are very popular.

Or did they become so popular partly because they have such recognizable features? Hmmm.

Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure: you can’t minimalize Pac-Man. Check out Browning’s photoset on Flickr for the rest of the art; I think they make for good iPhone wallpapers. He’s also selling T-shirt versions of some of the prints at MySoti.

Megaman-Inspired Street Fighter 4 Sprites: Ryuman Vs Sagatman Fight!

If you’ve ever wondered how Ryu and the rest of the warriors who like to battle on thoroughfares would look like if they were transported to Megaman’s original 8-bit world, you probably have too much time on your hands. Waste no more of your life, because Capcom forum member SpeedBrkr – he’s so fast some of the vowels in his name were left behind – has gone and done did it for your daydreaming ass. Behold, the cast of Street Fighter IV in 8-bit, Megaman style. Or Rockman style.

He’s also made a wallpaper in various resolutions, including an iPhone-ready version, made to look like a character select screen. You think the Blue Bomber can beat all of these fighters?

Damn those eyes are huge. Want individual sprites? SpeedBrkr’s got you covered. He’s not charging us for his awesome work, but if you’re going to use them on your site or anything please let him know.

Megaman Vs. Metroid: Please Make This Official Nintendo!

If I was asked what video game head-to-head I’d like to see, I’d probably say Sam Fisher against Solid Snake. Or all of the characters in Final Fantasy, villains included, against all the Suikoden characters. Mmmmm want. But I didn’t think of this match-up, one that certainly makes sense, although I’m not a fan of either series. The folks over at retro gaming site 8-bit.com are proud to present: Megaman vs. Samus Aran.

Okay so it’s really Megaman vs. Metroid, but we all know who the champion of Metroid is. Made with SNES-era graphics, the game plops the Blue Bomber down into the world of Metroid, presumably with Samus as the final boss, in order to settle once and for all which hero is better at using a literal hand cannon.

I say presumably because, well, I wasn’t able to finish the game, what with our deadlines and all. Blogging is hard work you know. So why don’t you head on to 8-bit.com right now and beat the game, so you can tell me how it ends. And then tell me how to finish it as well.

No matter what your religion you belong to, you’ll be a believer in the church of 8-bit platform gaming once you see this brilliant work of stained glass art, based on the classic Megaman gaming franchise.

Created by video game enthusiast / artist Gary in Cleveland, it was painstakingly assembled from numerous individually cut colored glass “pixels”.
