While most computers these days have at least some sort of memory card reader built in, you may still occasionally find yourself in possession of a card your machine can’t read. That’s why there’s still a market for those add-on multi-card readers. But one thing the almost all have in common is that they’re just that – common. Your other gadgets do, so why shouldn’t your memory card reader have some style too?

These coffee cup memory card readers from Green House(JP) definitely stand out from the crowd, and will look great sitting on your desktop alongside your real coffee mug. Though at just about 2.3″ in diameter, it’s more like an espresso cup than the big coffee mugs I’m used to drinking from.

They plug straight into your USB port, and can read a whopping 47 different media card formats (many of which are only slight variants and capacities of the same standard). For starters, it supports Compact Flash I/II, SD, SDHC, SDXC, mini SD, micro SDHC, Micro SDHC UHS-I, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, and Double Tall Half-Caf Cappucino. Just wanted to make sure you were still paying attention there. Clearly, you wouldn’t want to accidentally pour your morning cuppa joe into this thing unless you want to fry both it and your computer.

They’re available from GeekStuff4U for about $43 (USD), and come in the brown, green, violet or white colors shown above.

I really like my iPad but I have no illusions that the thing is perfect. There are many details I would change about the tablet if I could. One of those things is support for a memory card if for nothing other than putting photos onto my iPad and other things like music. It would be great if the memory card could be used for storage too.

Apple has the iPad Camera Connection Kit that adds USB to the iPad for directly connecting your camera. A company called MIC Gadget has unveiled its own accessory that is similar to that official Apple camera kit and the MIC Gadget offering is called the 3-in-1 iPad Camera Connection Kit. The thing adds a USB port for your camera like the official Apple accessory.

However, it also adds a microSD card reader also with a normal SD card reader for your memory card needs. This is about as close as we are likely to an integrated memory card reader on the iPad.

You can pre-order in black or white colors for $29.90 and the thing is set to ship sometime after Christmas.

This is definitely the biggest SD card I’ve ever seen. But despite its ridiculous size, it can only store 60 photos.

This giant-size SD card is actually a photo album for holding on to your 4″x6″ photo prints. I like how they even put the metallic contacts on the back of the album for added realism. Can you imagine the memory card reader you’d need to transfer files from this thing?

Now I rarely convert my digital images into prints these days, but for the occasional time I want something more tangible than pixels, I would want one of these to keep my hardcopies in. The SD card photo album ships this April, and is available for pre-order over at Spinninghat for £9.99 (appx. $16 USD).

Brando, sellers of some of the weirdest stuff I have ever seen in my life, are cutting back on absurdity with their latest gadgets. For example, their USB hub is functional and versatile. But still a bit weird.

Brando calls it the “USB 3-in-1 Rota-Rota Combo Hub”. I think its named like that because each of the 3 USB ports can be turned up to 90°, but you never know with Brando. Also, I don’t see how having rotating USB ports is useful. Does it make it easier to remove a device that’s plugged into a port?

Aside from the rota-rota ports, the Rota-Rota is also a multi-card reader and can read SD, SDHC, Memory Stick Duo, MicroSD and M2 cards.

I’d like to think of Brando’s product development process as open-minded: “Sally at HR’s niece says she’s always wanted to have a USB hub with built-in thermometers. Let’s make her dream come true.”

But Brando will benefit from a bit of the old spell-checking and proofreading; I think mass-producing gadgets with unnecessary gauges labeled “Tempreture” makes your company look a tad unprofessional. But that’s just me.

You can buy the USB 3-in-1 Rota-Rota Hub at Brando’s shop for $15.50 USD. Tempreture gauges included.

You may or may not recall this nifty portable Philips DVD player that let you snap your iPod into its case so you could play your digital media on the go. This new variant on the design is less about taking your player on the road, and more about playing your media at home.

Perfect for a kitchen countertop or any other place where you don’t need a big screen, Philips DCP951/37 Docking Entertainment System moves away from the clamshell case design to a flat, one-piece design that can stand up on its own. The player features a 9-inch diagonal LCD screen and built-in stereo speakers.

A handy iPod dock/charger pops out of the side of the player, keeping it out of harm’s way until you need it. In addition to playback from DVD or iPod, there’s a built-in SD/MMC card slot if you prefer to keep your media on memory cards. It supports a wide variety of playback formats including DVD, DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW, (S)VCD, DivX & MPEG4 videos.

Since the player’s DNA comes from Philips portable DVD line, it’s also got a rechargeable battery, so you can take it on the road. You should get enough time to watch about 2.5 hours of video on a single charge.

The only real downside that I can see to this player is the displays less-than-stellar 640×220 resolution. For a 9-inch screen that’s pretty darned weak. As long as you can deal with the low display resolution, the DCP951 looks like a good fit for tight spaces and can perform double-duty as a portable.

You can find it over on Amazon for $199.99.

If you take a ton of photos when you travel, and want a great place to store and organize all of your digital photographs while on the road, a a media storage bank might be worth the investment. The Epson P-3000 and P-5000 storage banks feature 40GB and 80GB of hard drive storage, respectively.

Both have 4-inch 640×480 TFT displays and can import photos from your CF, SD or SDHC memory cards. In addition to their large storage capacity, each can serve as a personal media player, with support for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, H.264, WMV, and Motion Jpeg video playback as well as MP3, WMA and AAC audio formats. Data can be imported or exported to your PC or MAC through the device’s USB 2.0 port.

The P-3000 is rumored to retail for $499 and the P-5000 for $699. With price pressure from Apple’s latest iPod 30 and 80GB models as well as Creative’s way-cool Zen Vision W, I’m hoping Epson rethinks their pricing.

ED: What is is about the number 52 this week? I just realized that I’ve posted three (1, 2, 3) articles in the last 24 hours all with the number 52 in the headline. I wish I could play that number on the roulette wheel!

The folks at TrustedReviews have learned that the Playstation 3 will require a special adapter in order to load saved games from PS1/PS2 memory cards. This quote is pulled directly from Sony’s Website:

To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card

What’s truly stupid is that the 60GB edition of the PS3 is supposed to have memory card slots onboard, but they didn’t bother to include a slot for PS2 or PSOne cards.
