No Morph Ball Samus?

Mega Man would also be a neat fit for this kind of toy. He’s good for like a hundred and one kits. Check out Ty Lettau’s Flickr page for more geeky art.

The latest trailer for the game recaps the story so far, from the original Metroid to present day.

I haven’t followed the series though so I don’t know why the Prime trilogy is not mentioned in the video. Or is it? Grab a drink and some chips, this is going to take a while.

I was waiting for Samus to say, “Then I realized that I had been in denial for so long. There is no galactic task force. I don’t care for no alien baby. And I hate this stupid bulky suit. I haven’t taken a bath since 1986. But as long as my adventures keep on selling, my story will go on. Craps.”

Metroid: Other M is exclusive on the Wii, and it drops on August 31. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $50 (USD).

Itching for a classic platforming game? Why not revisit the original Super Mario Bros.? Oh sure, you’ve finished it tons of times, but that’s with Mario. Now you can adventure on the Mushroom Kingdom with Link, Samus, Simon Belmont, Mega Man and – this is just so unfair – Bill from Contra in Super Mario Crossover. I just played the game and I still can’t believe it’s real, and it’s free!

The game was made by Jay Pavlina, aka explodingRabbit, and man did Jay create one hell of an homage. Each of the characters retain their own moves or weapons – Samus can turn into a ball and set bombs, Mega Man can slide and charge up his Buster, and the cruel Bill unleashes the Spread gun if he gets a Fire Flower. Did you read what I just said? The Spread gun. In Mario.

As if that wasn’t enough, Jay added the soundtrack from the characters’ respective games. I tell you, playing Super Mario with the Zelda soundtrack egging me on was so much fun.

Indie developer Daniel Remar’s upcoming PC game Hero Core is just about as old school as shooters and platformers get. The game sports Game Boy-era black and white graphics, and pays homage to earlier incarnations of Metroid and Mega Man. The goal is simple: help protagonist Flip Hero and defeat his nemesis Cruiser Tetron once and for all. Old School! Metroid! Mega Man! Cruiser! Tetron! All ingredients in a winning recipe if you ask me.

The world of Hero Core is a large Metroid map. Insane Skilled gamers are free to go straight to Cruiser Tetron’s base, or kill some or all of the bosses scattered about the map to gain experience before heading for the final battle. The game features two difficulty modes, the option to turn the map off, and offers bonus game modes and maps to those who finish it.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Hero Core is actually the sequel to Hero, which Remar made back in 2005. You can download Hero for free at Remar’s website; I’m assuming you can download Hero Core there as well when it’s released on May 1.

Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure: you can’t minimalize Pac-Man.
Strawberries, green jello, apple… and no strong stomach required. For something that shouldn’t be appetizing, this really is. Delicious backfire!

It looks more like it might be interested in eating me when you get right down to it. Or at least getting a nice grip on my face and then ripping it off. And I’m partial to my face.

If I was asked what video game head-to-head I’d like to see, I’d probably say Sam Fisher against Solid Snake. Or all of the characters in Final Fantasy, villains included, against all the Suikoden characters. Mmmmm want. But I didn’t think of this match-up, one that certainly makes sense, although I’m not a fan of either series. The folks over at retro gaming site 8-bit.com are proud to present: Megaman vs. Samus Aran.

Okay so it’s really Megaman vs. Metroid, but we all know who the champion of Metroid is. Made with SNES-era graphics, the game plops the Blue Bomber down into the world of Metroid, presumably with Samus as the final boss, in order to settle once and for all which hero is better at using a literal hand cannon.

I say presumably because, well, I wasn’t able to finish the game, what with our deadlines and all. Blogging is hard work you know. So why don’t you head on to 8-bit.com right now and beat the game, so you can tell me how it ends. And then tell me how to finish it as well.

Oh, Samus. Even when you’re all sexed up in your Zero Suit, or Justin Baileyed into your bikini, you’re still supposed to be an icon of female strength and power (and just generally bad to the bone). But in amigurumi form, you’re reduced to abject cuteness. For shame!

And if that’s not bad enough, here’s the least threatening Metroid ever:

That thing’s not sucking life force–it’s sucking cuteness from the very atmosphere. Artist oddgumi ought to change that moniker to amazingumi.

There’ve been a lot of bad-ass 8-bit quilts spread across the Internet, but usually, they’re dedicated to one game, serving as a showcase for a single NES-era memory. Not so with this quilt; this bad boy is more about the entire experience, so it’s fitting that it’s called “THE” Nintendo Quilt.

The gang’s all here… even that horrible dog from Duck Hunt. If only I could use that Zapper to shoot him in the face.

Quilter byneedleandthread has been working on the quilt since last summer, apparently (it was made as a gift!), and used available sprite patterns for some of the blocks, while others–like the Zapper and the Nintendo logo–were designed just for this project.

The game features special pewter Nintendo tokens including Mario’s cap, Link’s iron boots, Donkey Kong’s barrel, a Hylian shield, a Koopa shell and an NES controller. The game board is loaded with references to everything from Mario to Kirby to Zelda to Samus and more.

Even the Community Chest and Chance cards have been cleverly “Nintendized” with phrases like “Hit top of flagpole. Collect $20.” and “Turn off your system before saving your game. Go back 3 spaces.”

It’s definitely worth a look for that Nintendo fanboy (or girl) in your life.
