These new cases Bowden and Sheffield cases are minimal and handcrafted. The cases were the brainchild of Levi Price and Eric Rea, after they couldn’t find a case that was minimal and offered enough protection, without being permanently paired with the iPad.

The cases come in two flavors and both feature a magnetic closure system on the cover, as well as an ultra-soft inner felt lining to help keep your iPad secure. The Bowden Case is milled from aircraft-grade aluminum that’s been bead-blasted and hard-anodized. It includes hand-finishing in either walnut or cherry hardwood with a leather cover. The Sheffield case is made out of milled polycarbonate, and comes with the same choices of wood. The cover is 100% natural wool felt. One thing that makes The Sheffield unique is the built-in dry-erase whiteboard, which lets you write notes somewhere other than your iPad’s screen.

The project is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter. They’ve got 52 backers, and at this time have amassed a total of $5,627 out of a projected goal of $20,000, with 23 days left for funding. These cases are pretty sweet, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they get made. You’ll have to pledge $150 to $170(USD) to get yours.

iPhone stands are useful, especially when they are small, portable, and well designed. The Piolo iPhone 4/4S stand is one of the smallest that I’ve seen, yet it seems to work really well when you want to watch videos or get down to business.

The Piolo is simple in form and function, and weighs only 3.1 grams, so you can carry it around on your key ring without noticing it too much. It’s made out of a completely recyclable thermoplastic elastomer that won’t scratch your iPhone. You’ll barely notice carrying it around, so that’s a plus for any kind of stand in my book. The only downside is that it won’t work with bumper cases or other protective cases. They should think about making a version with a tiny adjustable clamp so it could.

The Piolo stand is available in 6 different colors and costs £4 (~$6 USD). You can get it directly from Piolo.

You’ve probably done doodles with a single continuous line while talking to someone on the phone, but Star Wars geek Sam Hallows took it to a whole other level by crafting these intricate drawings of Star Wars, each with a single line.

If you’ve never tried using a single continuous lines to do drawings, give it a try and you’ll see how hard it is to counter the instinct to pull up your pen. Sam never lifted his pen off the paper while creating these. His drawings include an AT-AT, X-Wing, the Millennium Falcon, C3-P0, and R2-D2.

Sam drew these for his independent final project on technology. He’s had them put onto postcards which will be available for purchase soon. I wouldn’t mind having these on some t-shirts as well.

Even though the vast majority of people use optical mice these days, there’s still a need for a nice mousepad. This stylish, silicone-based mousepad was created by the Chinese-Canadian designer Kitmen Keung.

The mousepad is appropriately the size of an A4 piece of paper, or 8.5″×11″. It has a corrugated side with an inward slope, that can act as a resting place for office accessories, like pens, pencils and rulers. The top layer of the mousepad has got an oven-baked polyurethane coating, with a tiny micro-grid. This results in a texture that has a noiseless, low-friction finish.

For those of you who don’t think they need a mousepad since the advent of optical mice, they’re still great for protecting your desks from the usual wear and tear that results in a mouse’s constant movement, as well as to give your mouse a smooth and even gliding surface that you’ll struggle to find unless your desk is made from glass or a smooth laminate.

Perhaps the one thing not to like about the A4 Mousepad is the price. At $50 (USD), it’s quite possibly the most expensive mouse pad I’ve seen. But if you really like its design, you can pick one up over at Kitmen Keung’s website.

Nooka definitely make some cool digital watches. They combine design with a sort of minimalistic appeal. This new one, the Zub Zibi Zirc, fits snug and has an very simple profile. I think from its looks, it’s intended to appeal to a different customer than their other watches, which have a tendency to be fairly masculine in style.

While Nooka haven’t said that this watch was specifically made for women and/or kids, I think they’ve been able to broaden the appeal of their line with these watches. Each one is wrapped in a bold polyurethane body, with an integrated watchband and a simple “button” clasp to cut down on mechanical parts. The LCD watch face is framed under a faceted gem-cut lens and the display shows the minutes surrounded by a circle with twelve partitions, each representing an hour.

It’s definitely not as hard to decipher as some of the other digital watches out there, so it should be no problem telling the time at a glance. Now saying its name… that’s another story altogether.

You can the Nooka Zub Zibi Zirc from Nooka for $80(USD) in four different colors.

Tokyoflash is notorious for releasing wristwatches with complicated designs, so I was a bit surprised to see them release the minimalistic On Air wristwatch. It barely has any tricks up its sleeve, merely combining the hour hand and the minute display. If that’s still too much for you you should stick to your smartphone’s clock. And stay in school.

For example, the watch above is displaying 3:45. Get it now? Fine. Here are more examples:

In keeping with its minimalist design, the watch face has four touch-sensitive zones – the top, bottom, left and right – for setting the time, date, alarm and light, all of which are activated by a prolonged touch. The On Air watch is yet another design which started out on TF’s Design Studio Blog, and based on a concept by Iskender and Adilet Asanaliev.

There are even some prints of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (Donatello) that made the cover. They sell for €50 (~$68 USD) and are each signed and numbered.

This has to be one of the most minimal watches that I’ve ever seen, and it also has a vibrating alarm function, which is something that I’ve been wanting to see in a watch for a long time. While some people need to hear an alarm, I’ve found that a vibrating alarm is enough to wake me up. The Mutewatch offers a silent alarm and a really cool design to go with it.

The time is shown on an LED display underneath a translucent capacitive touchscreen. Simply flick your wrist to see the time, and swipe the screen to cycle through its functions, which include the alarms and a timer. It includes a motion sensor which registers movement and will automatically adjust the strength of its vibration alarm. So, for instance, if you are sleeping, it increases the intensity of the vibrations. You can also customize the length of the vibrations, allowing you to use them as a reminder.

The watches were designed in Sweden and made in Taipei. The white version has sold out for now, but it’s still available in grey and red for $259 (USD). You can get one over at Mutewatch.

In a world where even second graders are already multi-tasking, it’s really no wonder why people continue to invent and come with stuff with dual purposes.

Take, for example, one of the most basic objects that you can find in your home: the clock. Its primary use is obviously just to tell the time and ring out an alarm once a day to get you out of bed. But no, the Bacon Alarm Clock goes a step further by cooking you up some bacon by the way you wake up. The IQ Alarm Clock makes you hurdle through some trivia questions before you can shut the alarm up as a form of brain exercise.

But if you’re in the mood for something simpler and have decorated the rest of your home minimally, then the Poketo! Icon Clock is your perfect match. It has one simple purpose and one use alone: to tell you the time and nothing more. It takes its minimalist theme very seriously; it doesn’t even have the customary numbers printed on its face.

The Icon Clocks come in basic black and classic white and are made from ABS Resin with a diameter of 3.5 in. These simplistic time-tellers are available from Poketo! for $37 (USD).

All have to say is that I stared at this image for about 20 minutes, and was only able to figure out about 40 of them, but I’m sure that if I kept thinking real hard I could get most of them right. Think you can name all 70 characters? I’ll get you started: Mario, Pac-Man, Link, Sonic…

Luckily, the print is available over at society6 so you can hang it on your wall and study it for as long as you’d like.

The iPod Nano’s minimal, tiny form factor has made it the perfect centerpiece for a wristwatch, but its design is also great for other integration opportunities, like this nifty Nano-specific dock that can hang on the wall, plugged directly into an outlet.

Designer Hern Kim’s WALdok is a compact speaker dock that perfectly complements the design of the latest iPod Nano, giving it a warm and cozy place to live when it’s not in your pocket or on your wrist. The tiny dock hangs neatly from a spare wall outlet, so it’s perfect over your kitchen countertop or in your bathroom.

The curvaceous design of the WALdok provides a nice contrast to, but complements the Nano well, and certainly looks way better than any old wall charger and cord. Inside the WALdok is a 40mm audio driver surrounded by a custom-designed bass chamber to provide the best low-end possible given the small size of the enclosure.

In addition to the white design, he also plans on producing a limited-edition black version (although I personally like the see-through variant that’s being made for the prototypes.)

At this point Hern is raising funds to produce the WALdok via Kickstarter, and if you’re interested in getting in on the action, you can bid as little as $10 bucks to show your support, or those who pledge at least $59 will get a WALdok when released, and pledges $99 and up get a pair. Higher pledges qualify you for the limited-edition models and other perks.

These minimal posters were designed by Alex Freeman and I have to say that I like them.

If you’re wondering, Doctor Who started out in 1963 and since then, eleven different actors portrayed him. The latest one is Matt Smith. The first six are in their respective order William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, and Colin Baker.

My favorite Doctor Who is the one portrayed by Tom Baker. While I haven’t watched the episodes with the first three doctors, I have watched all of them after that. The second row definitely represents Doctors four to six. They are easily recognizable. Alex mentions that if there is enough interest, he plans on selling these posters.

You see, the hour markers around the perimeter of designer J.P.Meulendijks‘ Chasing Time clock gradually change positions as the minutes pass. It’s designed so every time you look up at the clock, it looks just a little bit different than the last time you looked at it.

At least the clock hands work the way you’d expect, so you can still tell what time it is – even if you are completely hypnotized by the outer moving bits. If you’re looking for something different to hang on your wall you can order the Chasing Time clock from Swedish design shop pid.se for $359 (USD).

Each watch in the new V.01 collection features a bold face design with an off-center grey-on-black LCD screen. According to Ericsson, the V.01′s half-glass / half-stainless face “could represent the duality of life; like the yin and yang, the past and future, love and hate, right or wrong.” Or it could just represent a very cool way to tell time.

The VOID V.01 retails for €129 (appx. $166 USD including worldwide shipping) and comes in four bold color schemes. The display is protected by a durable mineral glass crystal and the stainless body sits on a genuine leather band. They’re available in a very limited edition of 500 pieces each, and you can get your hands on one of these beauties over at VOIDWatches.

If you’re a Technabob regular, you know I’m a sucker for cool modern watches. I don’t know why – maybe it’s that I got stuck wearing a dorky Casio calculator watch as a kid that makes me want to rebel in my old age.

Created by Italian architect/designer Denis Guidone, these watches work their magic thanks to their minimal modern design. From a stark planet-like orbital design to a set of super-skinny hairline hands radiating from the center of another, all three of his newest designs are really quite stunning.

Adding to the effect is the dramatic contrast between the pure white hands floating effortlessly over a pitch black backdrop. Each watch is then finished off with a simple black leather band.

There’s no word at this point on if or when these watches will be produced for the masses, but I wouldn’t complain if the artist decided to make up a few functional prototypes and send them my way.

Designed and realized by RISD BFA student Alvin Aronson, the D/A Clock is a clever mash-up between the digital and analog universes. As the numerals change state, the segments gradually rise and fall into their plain white background.

The guys over at Gizmodo dug up this brand new patent filing from Apple, showing off another true innovation from the design masters at the company.

The patent application describes a modified Apple Cinema Display with a docking slot in the side for a portable computer (presumably a new, slimmed down MacBook). Specifically, they’re attempting to patent the idea that the computer would be concealed by the LCD monitor once docked.

It’s really a brilliantly simple design concept, and would eliminate the need for bulky docking stations on the desktop. The way things look in the diagrams, it looks like some progress will need to be made with the thickness of the LCD panel before we’ll see these in the market.

…but I want one NOW!

Designed by Shigenori Ichimura and Tetsu Miyazawa of Japan’s &design, the clock draws its inspiration from the segments of an LED display. The analog hands get their bright glow from electroluminescent backlighting.

The clock is currently just in the prototype stage, but I’d definitely buy one of these cool timepieces if they ever manage to produce them.
