Cthulhu Monopoly: The Ancient Ones Invade New Jersey

Sure, we have every version of Monopoly that we could want right? Well, maybe now we do thanks to The Doom That Came To Atlantic City. It isn’t really a new version of Monopoly, but it just sort of spoofs it, with a bit of an Arkham Horror theme. Take Monopoly and throw in some Lovecraftian monsters and you have horror in New Jersey.

The game comes from artist Lee Moyer, designer Keith Baker, and sculptor Paul Komoda. The playing pieces look fantastic, Paul. They should since this game has been a work-in-progress for nearly 20 years. Now it is finally going to get real because their Kickstarter campaign was a success. (Though you still have about 2 weeks to get in on the action.)

This looks much better than all of those other lame Monopoly clones. Hopefully it will have been worth the wait. Supposedly it plays like a combination of Arkham Horror, with play elements of Munchkin thrown in.

Street Fighter Monopoly Coming: How Do You Pull Off Combo Moves with Dice?

I think we’ve seen almost every version of Monopoly possible. There’s Star Trek Monopoly, Nintendo Monopoly, Star Wars Monopoly, Futurama Monopoly and now it looks like there’s a Street Fighter version coming from Capcom and USAopoly.

It’s pretty much what you would expect. You’ll get the usual themed board spaces and the game pieces will be Street Fighter characters of course, which beats a hat and a thimble any day – unless the hat is the one that M. Bison wears.

Since there are so many Street Fighter characters to choose from, Capcom is leaving it up you to vote on which ones you want. If you want your say, head over to their blog and vote. Right now, the choices are down to: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka, E. Honda, Zangief, Dhalsim, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison. Unfortunately, it looks like Akuma and Rufus didn’t make the cut.

Monopoly Web Lovers Edition: Go Directly to Real World

We’ve seen a few fan made videogame-themed takes on Monopoly. Now here’s a design for regulars of the World Wide Web. Instead of streets and utilities, you settle on websites and software. Instead of free parking, you get free Wi-Fi. Instead of going to jail, you go to the real world.

The tokens are also Web-related, such as the Facebook silhouette and the Google Maps pin. I’m not sure what the star token is referring to though. Should’ve gone with the Reddit alien.

Speaking of Reddit, the sharing site and other popular sites are inexplicably missing on the board. I also think Facebook and Google would’ve been better stand-ins for the game-ending Boardwalk and Park Place properties instead of Yahoo! and Flickr. Then again, this is just a concept. But surely the Internet has more fans than Star Trek, so I don’t see why Hasbro wouldn’t consider releasing an actual Web Edition.

Skyrim Monopoly Adds a Few More Hours of Game Play

Skyrim. All the kids (and some of the adults) are playing it. Teachers are having meetings as homework assignments go undone. There is a shortage of Mountain Dew and Cheetos on store shelves, leaving WoW gamers in a panic. Doctors offices are crowded as young fingers get gnarled and arthritic before their time. Chores go undone and parents take out the trash themselves. And just when you thought that gameplay would be over soon, here comes Skyrim Monopoly by ~oddeh.

It may not be as engrossing as the real game, but it will add a few hours to your gameplay. That is, if you are reading this, which you aren’t, since you are playing Skyrim or napping a scant two hours so that you can play more.

When will this epidemic end? Don’t ask me. I’m going back to my game now.

Mass Effect Monopoly: Save the Galaxy One Dice Roll at a Time

I’m not Commander Shepard, and this is my – and as far as I know the only – Mass Effect-themed Monopoly game in the Citadel. It was made by prop maker/deviantARTist/just another Shepard Tommy LeRoy, who was inspired by the equally awesome Fallout Monopoly.

LeRoy didn’t include the house and hotel pieces he used, so I don’t know if he made custom ones as well, but as you’ll see in the gallery below the game has its own property cards, bills – that are not convertible to Omni-gel – and player tokens, although the latter are just palette-swaps of Shepard’s helmet. A Normandy token would’ve been awesome, or an Omni-Tool, or a Mako – actually no, screw that vehicle.

The graphic on the center of the board is mesmerizing. Fire up your starship and take a mass relay to deviantART to browse the pictures of the board game in high-res. See this Hasbro? I’m throwing credits on the screen and nothing’s happening. Make it happen. With all due respect to Trekkies, this board is way more awesome than the official Star Trek Monopoly.

Monopoly: Rapture Edition

While video games are a blast, sometimes it’s still fun to sit around the coffee table with friends and play a board game. But the fact that you’re playing a board game doesn’t mean you still can’t be playing a video game at the same time – like with the Monopoly: Rapture Edition.

I was hoping that this was an officially-licensed game from Hasbro, but BioShock fan KatMann actually put together this fully-playable edition of Monopoly, inspired by BioShock. The game replaces the familiar locations of Atlantic City with landmarks of the undersea world of Rapture.

As you roll the dice, you’ll stop at the Little Sisters Orphanage, Adonis Baths, Eve’s Garden, eventually making your way to Fontaine’s and Cohen’s Apartments. I like how those are the expensive blue properties. Speaking of which, I’ll give you $1 if you’ve got Boardwalk from the McDonald’s Monopoly game and mail it to me.

But I digress. You’ll also find that Community Chest and Chance have been replaced with the more appropriate “Power to the People” and “Swami” cards. Nice touch. There’s even Rapture currency for you to spend. Although I think that it would have been better for the banker to hand out syringes filled with ADAM to spend on plasmids and gene tonics.

So if you want to play Monopoly: Rapture Edition for yourself, there’s a file to print out the board, deeds and money here, though I didn’t see any Power or Swami cards in the archive. Guess you’ll have to make up your own. I’m sure you can come up with something. Here, I’ll get you started:

Fallout Monopoly: Go Directly to the Vault, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect 200 Bottlecaps

The Fallout games are awesome and I have wasted many hours just exploring the wasteland and meeting it’s inhabitants. If you are also a Fallout fan, you are going to love this. Fallout Monopoly. Yes, it is an amazing meeting of video and board games.

PinkAxolotl (Elisabeth Redel) created this amazing mashup for her boyfriend. (What has your girlfriend done for you this week? Anything this cool?) Of course all of the streets are now named after streets from the game. GO is now G.O.A.T. which is very clever and “free parking” is the “please stand by” screen, also very appropriate.

What about the cards? Each one has a perk from Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas with a retro playing card image in back. It is truly a work of geek art. I wish Elizabeth were my girlfriend.

Star Trek Monopoly: Boldly Go and Collect $200

I’m not a trekkie, so pardon me if there is indeed evidence to the contrary, but I don’t think acquiring and managing properties is within the duties of a starship captain. But now you can help the best captains from five different eras conquer the board game frontier with Monopoly: Star Trek Continuum Edition.

As you’d expect, most of the elements of the game have been given a trekkie twist, from the houses and hotels, which have been renamed “ships” and “fleets”, to the player tokens. Instead of the usual thimble and bag of coins, they’ve been replaced with a Vulcan harp, phaser, communicator, Klingon blood wine goblet, shuttlecraft and of course the captain’s chair. In case you were wondering why the starships are not tokens, that’s because they fill in for railroads instead.

You can order the Star Trek Monopoly Continuum Edition either from ThinkGeek for $40 (USD), or Amazon for about $26.

Forget Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo is a Monopoly

All of your favorite classic Nintendo characters have now been memorialized in the Monopoly: Nintendo Collector’s Edition board game from Parker Brothers.

The game features special pewter Nintendo tokens including Mario’s cap, Link’s iron boots, Donkey Kong’s barrel, a Hylian shield, a Koopa shell and an NES controller. The game board is loaded with references to everything from Mario to Kirby to Zelda to Samus and more.

Even the Community Chest and Chance cards have been cleverly “Nintendized” with phrases like “Hit top of flagpole. Collect $20.” and “Turn off your system before saving your game. Go back 3 spaces.”

It’s definitely worth a look for that Nintendo fanboy (or girl) in your life.
