No matter how many new video game franchises come along, it’s still some of the earliest console games which have the most popular gaming characters of all time. Take, for instance, Mario and Mega Man. Both released nearly 30 years ago (yikes, I feel really old), these iconic gaming characters have grown up alongside those of us who grew up playing video games. If you’d like a constant reminder of these classic characters, then you might want to add one of these handmade gaming mosaics to your home.

Michael Crow of Mike’s Mosaics created these Mario and Mega Man mosaics using glazed terracotta and ceramic tiles, and they look awesome. I love that Mario is wearing his Tanooki look, though I think he’d have trouble getting off the ground with all the added weight of the tile and concrete backing board.

Mega Man looks mighty fine too, sporting his classic blue costume.

Mario is really substantial, measuring in at 27.5″ x 23.25″, while Mega Man is a bit smaller at 12.5″ x 15.5″. Since both have been sealed, they’re okay for indoor or outdoor use. I’d be so thrilled with these guys in my garden instead of gnomes (hint-hint). Mario is priced at $250 (USD), and Mega Man is going for $200. Both can be found over at Mike’s Mosaics Etsy Shop. Mike will also make custom mosaics of your favorite character on request.

Designer Pete Fecteau spent much of 2010 creating this amazing Rubik’s Cube mosaic of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., comprised of 4,242 individual Rubik’s Cubes. The mosaic measures 18’6″ by 9’8″ and weighs about 1,000 pounds. The concept of using Rubik’s Cubes this way came to Fecteau in a dream.

In order to get that pixellated look, each Rubik’s Cubes had to be turned into the correct positions to a small 3×3 portion of the larger image. It’s an amazing piece of art, and the result is quite spectacular.

He calls this work Dream Big, and it’s most definitely that. For a short time, it was also the world’s largest Rubik’s Cube mosaic. Pete is part of the CubeWorks collective, a collaborative group of artists creating works using Rubik’s Cubes as their medium.

I love Star Wars. For a while, when I was younger, I used to watch the movies every month or so with my sister. Most of the time, we skipped the original and watched Empire and Jedi. That’s why I love this bathroom. It was designed by Emily Jagoda for a kid’s bathroom, but in our geek culture, it would be fine for adults as well.

The mosaic is nice and clean. It features C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chewbacca. These characters do seem to gel together in the movies and they do the same in this mosaic. There are more characters hidden away. I think I see a Luke Skywalker or Wedge Antilles peeking out as well.

Needless to say that I’d like to have one of these in my house, but I doubt that my wife or the new occupants of our duplex would approve.

Over a period of 6 months, Instructables member skeplin gathered up a whole crapload of caps and made himself a giant Princess Peach mosaic with all of them. By taking each cap and handpainting it with one of 16 colors, then arranging them into a 28×35 grid, he created this pixelated masterwork to hang on his wall. He used a little bit of Perl and ImageMagick to figure out the colors from Peach’s original image, then used that data to build his pixel map. But why talk about it, when you can see how he did it?

But even if they don’t play, they sure would look cool hung on the wall of your game room. They’re made by Breakin’ & Makin’ Mosaics, and currently come in NES, Wii-Mote and PS 3 versions.

Each one is handmade from numerous individual tiles, carefully arranged to look like your favorite controllers. The PS3 controller measures 12″ x 4″, the Wii-mote 13″ x 3″, and the NES controller 13″ x 5″.

They sell for $45(USD) each, and can be found over at Breakin’ & Makin’ Mosaic’s Etsy shop. Maybe if enough of you guys ask nicely, she’ll make an Xbox 360 version – or at least an Atari 2600 one.

LEGO has just released an official iPhone App. Is it as cool as you think it will be? Maybe, maybe not.

There’s just something about LEGOs that is completely timeless. Even though it’s been years since I used the bricks, I still love anything that’s connected to them. When I first heard about the app, I had all of these strange fantasies about what it would actually be.

It turns out that it’s an app that turns photos in to LEGO brick mosaics. Initially, this sounds like something that’s got limited appeal, but I have to say that it looks like it’s fun to use.

I know that I’m a bit of a LEGO geek, so this app is right up my alley. Sure, you could just use a filter in Photoshop and get the same result, but this is on the fly on your iPhone! The results look pretty, but it’s a bit sad though that you can’t specify what kind of LEGO bricks should be used in the mosaic.

You can grab the LEGO Photo iPhone app here for the low price of… free.

Each pack of Motifo magnets ($79 to $99 USD) comes with nearly 1300 1-inch square magnets, along with diagrams to create numerous images on the face of your fridge. Motifo has put together pixel maps for a variety of celebrities, pop culture icons, and other patterns you can create on your refrigerator door. Each set can make any of the designs shown on their website, but the color scheme will depend on the kit you buy.

If you poke around a little bit, you might be able to find a set at Australia’s Pulp Creative Paper.

The LEGO series of video games has popularized a whole new side of the brickish culture by focusing on things that look like they’re made of LEGO but which really aren’t. There’s really only one way to counteract this sort of tomfoolery: actually doing those scenes, settings, and characters over in real Lego bricks. That’ll show ‘em.

LEGO enthusiast Dave, who puts his work on Flickr under BrickWares, made this mosaic for his son’s birthday. It features Batman and Robin, as you probably figured out, in their blocky personas from LEGO Batman. There’s just something satisfying about seeing the characters made from actual LEGOs.

When asked, Dave indicated that this completed mosaic probably cost about $500 to put together. That’s a lot of LEGOs! Perhaps more importantly, that’s a whole lot of time. It’s not his first, either; you can see more of Dave’s mosaics on his Flickr account.

Here’s something for true fans of Nintendo’s classic Legend of Zelda adventure series. Etsy contributor ProphetofDoom recently created this wonderful mosaic version of the video game’s protagonist Link.

Handmade from thousands of individually cut pieces of stained glass, it took the artist over three months to complete. The $250 piece has been up on Etsy for a couple of months now, but I’m sure it’ll go fast once word gets out.
