Not a fan of the iPod Nano? Is it not smart enough for you? Well, you may have a decent alternative soon. At its NYC press event today Motorola announced MotoACTV, the company’s new smart watch. Admittedly, that image doesn’t shout style and make me want to buy one, but what does it have going for it?

Well, it has a 600MHz processor and weighs just 35 grams for one thing. MOTOACTV combines a GPS-enabled touchscreen watch with a smart music player. Those looking for a watch to workout to should like the fact that it learns songs that will make you exercise harder and it plays those songs more often. (This is where the ACTV part comes into play. Get it?)

There’s also a built-in heart rate monitor and it will give you performance stats like duration, distance, avg. pace, calories burned, and avg. heart rate through a Bluetooth headset. It also has an FM radio built in, and will peer with your smartphone to allow your to answer calls or read texts from the watch display.

It will track your running, walking and cycling stats outside, and treadmill and step machine stats indoors. If you like, you can access your stats via a web browser as well at motoactv.com. So yeah, basically this is a smart-Nano for fitness geeks. MOTOACTV will be available on November 6th, with an 8GB version costing $249.99 (USD) and a 16GB model for $299.99.

So what’s a Lapdock? It’s a dock that will work with Motorola’s “Webtop”-enabled smarpthones. This is the mode that Motorola smartphones go into when they are connected to a TV or a laptop dock. The phone turns into a mini Linux laptop with a full desktop browser and more features.

For now, the Motorola Photon 4G and Motorola Atrix are the only smartphones that will work with the Lapdock 100, but that’s better than the older models which each had a different dock. It’s a bit chubbier than previous models, weighing about 2.2 pounds, and offers a 10.1″ screen. It’s a nice concept, but I doubt that the current crop of phones are truly fast enough to replace a decent laptop.

For now, the pricing of the new Lapdock hasn’t been announced, but the outgoing models sold for around $500 (USD). It will need to be a lot cheaper than that for more people to adopt it, especially when you can pick up decent netbooks for under $300.

If the mobile phone or smartphone you have right now really sucks and you want a new device, AmazonWireless has a killer deal you need to check out. The smartphone is the Motorola Droid Bionic, which is one of the latest offerings from Motorola. The phone is 4G LTE capable and works on the Verizon network.

The phone has only been out for a few weeks now and when it landed, the price was about $180. As of today, Amazon has discounted the smartphone significantly. The phone sells for $149.99 and then you get a $50 gift card as well. That makes the total cost under $100 for one of the coolest Android smartphones around. Of course, you’ll need to activate a service contract with Verizon to get the deal.

If you aren’t familiar the Droid Bionic runs Android 2.3, has 4G connectivity, a 4.3-inch qHD screen, GPS, WiFi and a lot more. The phone rocks a 1GHz dual-core processor and can be used as a hotspot on the go. Internal storage is 16GB and the phone has a 16GB microSD card too.

Google made one of the largest purchases that it has ever made today with the announcement that it would be buying Motorola Mobility. Motorola has its fingers into all sorts of tech markets and Google is purchasing the mobility product segment only. This means that Google will own the OS with Android and will own the hardware design side of the operation too.

Motorola was one of the largest companies in the smartphone market with some of the most popular Android smartphones around. The deal will cost Google $40 per share at a cost that works out to to about $40 billion. That’s a 63% premium on the street price over Motorola Mobility share prices at the close of last week. The transaction has been approved by the board at Google and at Motorola.

The purchase still needs to be approved by the shareholders at Motorola. The purchase is also subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions. Google hopes to have the purchase wrapped up by late 2011 or early 2012. Google will continue to make Android an open platform and Motorola Mobility will be a separately operated company.

I think that the Motorola Xoom sounds really cool, and I was interested in the thing when we first heard about it. Then the pricing started to surface and I thought it was too expensive to take a chance on. But, if you can live with the WiFi only version of the tablet (and most of us can) you can get it at a decent price in Sam’s Club warehouse stores.

Some pics of displays for the Xoom at Sam’s have surface with the WiFi only tablet priced at $539. That makes the Xoom only about $50 more than the entry-level iPad 2. I guess that $40 difference will certainly make a lot of tablet shoppers take pause as they consider what to buy.

The official price mentioned only a few weeks back by Motorola’s CEO was $599. If the $539 price at Sam’s isn’t short term or sale pricing, perhaps Motorola realized that pricing the Xoom $100 higher than the iPad 2 wouldn’t be a good thing for sales.

The iPad 2 was just announced this week and it’s interesting to see it compared to the other tablets that are currently on the market. GeeksAreSexy compares the iPad 2 to the Motorola Xoom, the Samsung Sliding PC 7, and the Notion Ink Adam.

The iPad 2 starts out at $499 (USD), but that’s just for the base model. The 64GB 3G+WiFi version will set you back a cool $829. Apple’s main advantage is that this is the second generation of their tablet so they’ve had time to polish the device even further. The competition is just playing catch-up.

Will you get an iPad 2? I might since I don’t have one, but I don’t like how closed iOS is. I prefer to be able to do what I want with my computers, not have Apple decide what I can install.

As usual, iFixIt did their best to tear down the latest new gadget – the Motorola Xoom – the minute it was released. It’s taken a while before the iPad received any significant competition from other manufacturers. Will the Xoom be able to compete? While the teardown doesn’t answer that question, it did reveal one important differentiator – the Xoom may be upgradeable.

The most significant part of the teardown is the fact that they found an dummy PCI board that’s dedicated to “future upgrades” – likely to come in the form of a 4G LTE wireless card. Contrary to Apple’s approach, this makes the Xoom much closer to the ethos of a PC because of the upgrade possibility.

Most tablets are closed technology, meaning that if you buy one your stuck with it until you replace it. It allows the manufacturers to entice you with their newly released models every year. If the Xoom could actually be upgraded, that could definitely give it an edge over other tablets.

Remember the remote control + pager hack we shared with you a few months ago? Well, one of the big guys finally had the exact same idea. Motorola has made a remote control and dock combo, with the latter having a Find Key – the big white button in the picture below. When the Find Key is pressed, the remote will emit a sound and flash its lights so you can easily locate it. If you also manage to lose the dock, then you’re screwed.

The dock also serves as the remote’s charger and as you can see, it also has a digital clock. The dock can get its power from an outlet or via USB.

I’m not sure if the Motorola R331 Easy Find remote control is already on sale though. Check out Motorola’s website for more info.

The tablet wars continue at CES this week, with more and more competitors entering the fray. Motorola is one of the companies who recently announced entry into the market, with the XOOM Tablet (I wonder what the first XOOM thinks about having a namesake). In a market that’s quickly being saturated, the XOOM has a handful of features that Motorola hopes will make it stand out and be noticed. First of these is its operating system, Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

The XOOM is the first to use Google’s tablet-optimized Android, which should bring “widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customization and features the latest Google Mobile innovations” to tablet devices. A couple of the Google apps that will be on the tablet are Google Maps 5.0 and Google eBooks.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As the video above mentions, hardware-wise the XOOM is a powerhouse – 1GHZ dual core CPU, 10.1″ HD 1280 x 800 screen, a 5mp rear-facing camera that can capture 720p video, and a 2mp front-facing camera that can be used for video conferencing. The Xoom also has lots of sensors, such as “built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting”. The XOOM also supports Flash 10.1, so watching videos online should be no problem for the tablet. Below is a video shot by CNET at CES 2011, featuring a Motorola rep cautiously showing off the XOOM.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The final ace up the XOOM’s proverbial sleeve is the promise of LTE. The device will be under Verizon’s 3G network when it comes out on the first quarter of this year, but the telecom company promises that XOOM will be able to upgrade to a faster LTE network in the second quarter.

What do you guys think? As someone who has yet to purchase a tablet device I’m actually very interested with the XOOM, but I think I’ll wait for the Notion Ink ADAM to come out, and of course the iPad 2 before I make my decision.

By now, you’ve surely heard all the hullabaloo over the so-called “death grip” issue with the iPhone 4, which has intermittent reception issues if you hold your iPhone “wrong.” thanks to its innovative, but flawed antenna band design. So it was only a matter of time before the competition would take advantage of this flaw, and that’s just what these guys did in a flyer for Motorola and Verizon, touting the new Droid X..

To quote the ad:

…And most importantly, it comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls. You have a voice. And you deserve to be heard.

All kidding aside, from what I’ve seen and heard, the Droid X looks like a really nice phone. I like the fact that it’s got an 8MP camera, a big screen, and, of course, double antennas. I wouldn’t want to hold my phone wrong and get my calls dropped. Of course, it doesn’t run iMovie…

… at least that what I gathered from the Clutch i465′s fact sheet: “A full QWERTY keyboard with shortcut keys and software upgrades such as IM-style texting helps you multitask like a champion.” Finally, a phone with a killer left hook. Seriously though, the iDEN-equipped Clutch offers several ways of communicating as well as the now-expected camera & audio/video capabilities of modern handsets.

Aside from the conventional calling & (IM-style) texting over a cellular network, the Clutch also has push-to-talk (PTT) capability and email. The Clutch is also equipped with a 1.79″ 64k color TFT display, Bluetooth, and a camera with 4x zoom that can take 300k resolution (VGA) pictures as well as record video in H.263 format. It can also play MIDI, WAV & mp3 audio files.

As you can see, the Clutch also sports a rugged casing. According to Motorola, “Clutch meets military-specs for extreme conditions including shock, vibration, dust, and solar radiation. And it can fight – and win – in 5 different weight classes.”

The Clutch i465 is due 2nd Quarter of this year. Watch out phones, this one might knock you out. Like a champion.

Let it be known that I am not the one responsible for that analogy. Battery Geek Inc., makers of said battery pack, are to be commended for such an exquisite and refreshing figure of speech.

So why is the SPPS200 200 Wh Portable Power Station the BMW M6 of battery packs? Because its little brothers, the 118 Wh and 130 Wh models, are the BMW of battery packs, that’s why. So why are they the BMWs of battery packs? Because they’re expensive. So why are they expensive? Because they can power your laptop, for up to 30 hours. Vrooom.

The SPPS 200 can power PC laptops for 20-30 hours, while MacBooks owners can expect 16 hours of extra runtime. BMW of runtimes if you ask me.

And that’s not all: As you may have guessed from the picture, you can adjust the output voltage of the PPS so that aside from giving your laptop the BMW of battery lives, it can also power and recharge your cellphone, your PDA, your PSP, your iPhone, your iPod and other mp3 players.

And that’s not all: You don’t even need to bring the chargers for any of those devices because the PPS comes with adapters that will fit with your gadget. You can check out the link to Battery Geek below for the BMW of supported laptops and mobile devices. And that’s not all: while Macbooks are supported, Battery Geek charges an extra $20 for the Macbook/Macbook Pro adapter. G4 and Powerbook adapters are already included with the PPS.

And that’s not all: The PPS weighs only 4.4 lbs. and is just over an inch thick. What’s the catch? The BMW M6 of battery pack prices, of course. The list price of the SPPS 200 is $800 (USD). Fortunately, you can buy it straight from Battery Geek for the BMW of discounted prices of $500. And that’s not all: when you buy the SPPS 200, you’ll get the BMW of freebies, a free leather & canvas travel case.

And that’s not all: Here are the BMWs of introductory videos for battery packs:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Now you know the BMWs and the BMW M6s of the tech world. Next time we’ll take a look at the Scot Pollard of rap.

Update: a couple of commenters have pointed out that the spps200 may in fact be the Ford Edsel of battery packs. Apparently Battery Geek also has poor service. Caveat emptor.

Product RED incorporates special products and services from a variety of major corporations including American Express, Converse, Armani, Motorola, Gap and Apple. What’s truly special here is that a fairly significant percentage of the proceeds of sales go to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria .

Initial products include a special RED watch from Emporio Armani, Motorola RED RAZR and SLVR phones and a new RED iPod Nano among others. Additional products and services will be rolled out in the future.

So the next time you’re in the market for a gift or a gadget for yourself, always be sure to check the Product RED website first. You might be able to make a difference while you’re indulging yourself.
