Even though you don’t really need a mouse pad to make your mouse work these days, most people still have one. I know that I like using my mouse pad with my desktop, no matter what the surface it’s resting on. It just makes it easier to move. That being said, there’s no reason why you can’t spice it up a bit. Check out this Space Invaders embroidered mouse pad you can make for yourself.

In this particular case, the design started with a simple and super cheap (99 cent) foam IKEA Lågis mouse pad. To make your own, you’ll have to select the pixelated image you want to embroider, but you can easily download something off the web to serve as a pattern.

Once you have done this, you can mark the picture with a white pencil or gel ink marker on your mouse pad, using a dense plastic grid to transfer the pixel pattern. Then it’s time to start stitching.

The results are quite cool, and Hanne from Eilen Tein reports that a laser mouse has no problems working over the pattern. Of course, the same technique will work with any pixel art, so you don’t need to feel limited to Space Invaders. Why not go for a Super Mario Bros. or Pac-Man mouse pad to mix it up a little bit?

I’ve never had a problem fitting my wireless mouse into my laptop bag or backpack, but if you’re having trouble finding a place for your device when you’re on the go, you might want to check out the Smartfish Mouse Pad Travel Pouch. What you see is what you get here – a mouse pad that doubles as a pouch to carry your mouse and other small peripherals.

Its snap handle adds even more practicality. Use it to hang the pouch on your bag, or on yourself if you love your mouse that much. You can order the Mouse Pad Travel Pouch on Smartfish’ online shop for $15 (USD).

But honestly, even if I needed it I’d think long and hard before buying this. On one hand, it’s quite practical, but is it $15 practical? More importantly, I wonder if the mouse pad will stay flat and even over time despite being bent and curled while in pouch mode.

I need this product. My right shoulder and arm start to hurt after a few hours in front of my computer because they’re extended for most of the time. This simple piece of plastic will allow me to be in a sitting position with much less stress on my shoulder, arm and back. Below are the simple “Installastion” procedures. Hopefully, their product is better than their spellchecker.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to myself: Self, your mousing hand gets so cold all the time; I only wish there was a way to keep it warm and toasty in between all that scrolling, pointing and clicking. (sarcasm.)

Thanks to this weird, wacky mouse pad from Japan’s Thanko, you can keep your chilly hand nice and warm while you crank out spreadsheets and surf the web. Just stick your hand inside the “mouth” of this oversize blue googley-eyed fish and an integral heating element keeps your fingers fiery hot (or maybe that’s its stomach acid dissolving your skin into a gelatinous goo).

Just plug the blue monster into a spare USB port, and it’ll reach a fiery 42° C (107.6° F) in about 10 minutes. I suppose it beats wearing ski gloves when you’re working on your PC.

You can get your hands on (or inside) one of these from USBGeek for $22.
