While everyone was checking out all the shiny new games at E3, we somehow missed this oddity. The guys at Namco Bandai are working on a brand new Pac-Man TV show. And it’s no ordinary 2D stuff, it’s got a whopping 3, count ‘em, 3 dimensions.

The guys over at Gametrialers were fortunate enough to get their hands on a copy of the trailer, which you can check out below. And now, despite the fact that it’s all blurry and 3D looking, there’s no way to actually watch it in 3D on your computer. But you get the point.

Ah yes, it’s just as inexplicable as we hoped. Would you expect any less from Pac-Man and his ghostly pals? We figured not.

Check out the HD version of the trailer over at Gametrailers. And no, we have no idea if or when this will actually ever show up on TV.

I knew there was a reason I loved Japanese games. Here’s what might be the strangest game to come stateside since Noby Noby Boy and the Katamari Damacy series. Namco Bandai’s Muscle March is one of this week’s releases on the Nintendo WiiWare shop, and it’s truly an odd-ball.

I’ll leave it to the game’s creator to sum up Muscle March for you:

“The all mighty protein powder has been stolen so it’s up to Tony and his muscle-bound crew to catch the thieves. Choose from a variety of perfectly molded superstars and bring these terrible villains to justice. As each thief attempts their escape, they will smash through walls while making a variety of poses. You must match these poses to fit through the holes and catch up to the thieves. The protein powder will be yours again!”

Basically, the game plays out sort of like the equally bizarre and hysterical Japanese game show Hole in The Wall on steroids – literally. And if pumping up your huge digital pectorals and running through walls isn’t enough for you, the game includes something called “Endless Rush” mode which lets you build your muscles until they bulge and explode. Whee!

Last, but certainly not least – the game features polar bears in swimsuits. Why? Why not. I’ll let Namco explain: “The all new Polar-Bear-in-a-Swimsuit Engine will take bodybuilding to a level beyond your imagination.”

If that doesn’t help, maybe you should watch the trailer below and it’ll all become crystal clear.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Actually, I think it makes more sense in Japanese:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Muscle March is available now over on the WiiWare store for 500 Wii points. Protein powder and HGH not included.

Now I’ve not been shy in saying that the Gravity Gun in Half Life 2 is my all-time favorite video game weapon. So when I heard about Namco Bandai’s new Xbox 360/PS3 third-person gravity manipulation shooter Inversion, my curiosity was definitely piqued.

In Inversion, your primary weapon is the Grappler – which is like a Gravity Gun on steroids. Wielding the Grappler, you can move massive environmental objects, changing the landscape of the gameplay arena with a pull of the trigger. And while you can manipulate objects with your Grappler, you’ll also encounter zero gravity and other gravitational anomalies in the environment, which should make for some unique combat situations. You’ll also need to use your gravity manipulation skills to solve a variety of puzzles that keep you from reaching your objectives.

Think your opponent is crouching behind that bus? Just pick it up and move it out of the way. Or better yet, drop the bus on his head. Or just toss him aside like yesterday’s garbage.

Inversion is also one of the first games to feature Havok’s new Destruction physics engine, which provides incredible destructible environments – woo hoo! The game is being developed by Saber Interactive – best known for the time-manipulation shooter TimeShift.

Expect Inversion to land on Xbox 360s and PS3s some time in 2010. Keep an eye out for this one. Just don’t try and hide behind anything. I’ll find you and drop a bus (or two) on your ass.

In even more game localization news, the atmospheric adventure Fragile is set for release outside Japan. The moody title follows Seto, a young boy traversing a ruined world in search of other people–any other people. Certainly a darker theme than the anime-inspired visuals might at first evoke, but Fragile is painted in dark strokes that suit the story’s underlying despair.

The developers revealed, before the game’s release in Japan, that a great deal of effort and money went into polishing Fragile, so it isn’t altogether surprising the title is being given a chance to recoup more of that expense. But whatever the reason, gamers outside of Japan are the ones who’ll benefit here.

There are even rumors of a Japanese language track in addition to full English voice acting, a much-desired yet rare option for many games. But even without the original voice acting, Fragile will be a game to watch (and, uh, play).

The Sky Crawlers: the Most Beautiful Wii Game You’Ve Probably Never Heard of

The Sky Crawlers should be beautiful–the combination of Production I.G.’s visuals from the animated film and the Ace Combat team from Namco Bandai should be a home run every time. The problem isn’t the Wii game’s beauty, but the simple reality that, at first, there seemed to be no reason to release it outside of Japan. But late last year, The Sky Crawlers film was optioned for English-language release… but there was no word on a localization for the game.

Now, however, we’ve finally heard a whisper of localization. Listings have suddenly turned up with several Australian retailers, so this is a rumor with legs. Will new publisher Atari bring the game to the United States? With the film releasing this month in the U.S. on DVD, it would be a good time to do so… and it would also be a major stealth release, considering there hasn’t been a whisper until now.

Seems like a waste of a beautiful game, if so. If you’re into flight games, it’s worth keeping an ear to the ground on this one. An English-language release would be well worth checking out.

Katamari Damacy is one of those game franchises that just seems pretty much perfect. It’s highly addictive and incredibly fun, particularly considering the games are based on a simple gimmick of rolling a stick ball around and collecting things (like cows, cars, and maybe even cabbages). But just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the next iteration is on its way, and rolling is going to be a whole new experience.

In the forthcoming PS3-exclusive Katamari Forever, the stars have all been destroyed and need to be remade (again, sigh), but this time, things are a little different–in several key ways. Katamari Forever is a mix of old and new levels, and the old levels take place in the King of All Cosmos’s faulty memory, and they are devoid of color. As you roll your katamari, color leaches back into the stage.

In some of the new stages, your katamari has the power to alter the world; in one desert stage, you terraform the landscape with a water-soaked katamari, absorbing the sand and producing verdant forest. Katamari Forever will also have neat effects like graphics filters you can purchase with points earned, so you can see your rollable world in wood grain, for instance, and a comic effect mode. But with all this gain comes sacrifice: the only multi-player feature we saw with Beautiful Katamari will be absent. Not a huge price to pay, however.

What do you get if you combine the charm of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy with the gimmicks of classic Pac-Man and Kirby, and also the recent Prey the Stars? Not a mess, as you might think; that does sound like quite a combination, doesn’t it? No, the result is more likely to be along the lines of The Munchables, an upcoming game for the Nintendo Wii.

The bright colors and art design are certainly reminiscent of Keita Takahashi’s aforementioned games, and that’s not too surprising, considering The Munchables is also coming from Namco Bandai. They know what works. In this game, players are tasked with eating… and eating… and eating, until your guy gets bigger and can then–guess what?–eat more.

Check out The Munchable’s little pink fellow in the game’s trailer below. Be careful, though–it might make you hungry. Okay, actually, probably not.

I hope not, at least.

At this week’s Game Developers Conference, a number of incredible new (and old) additions were announced for the Wii’s downloadable game services, but the one that really gets me going is this: arcade titles will be added to the Virtual Console lineup. There’s just nothing like the classics.

Nintendo didn’t mess around with any of this fancy advance warning business, either; bam! The arcade additions were announced, and bam! You can already download a few via the Virtual Console. Here’s the list of games that have been announced:

Gaplus (Namco Bandai): 600 Wii Points (available now)

Mappy (Namco Bandai): 500 Wii Points (available now)

The Tower Of Druaga (Namco Bandai): 500 Wii Points (available now)

Starforce (Tecmo): 500 Wii Points (available now)

Space Harrier (Sega) (coming soon)

Solvalou (Namco Bandai) (coming soon)

Nintendo DS devotees have long hoped for a Katamary Damacy game on the versatile handheld, and since every other company in the history of gaming has jumped on the trend of remaking games for the current handhelds, it’s long been a disappointment that the franchise has been absent from Nintendo’s juggernaut. But all that’s about to change. Well, sort of.

Korogashi Puzzle Katamari Damacy is in fact a part of the Katamari franchise, and it is for the Nintendo DSi, but it’s a puzzle game and it’s part of the forthcoming DSiWare download service… at least, in Japan, where the game will be available next week. The gameplay is similar to Pac-Attack, a classic puzzler based on Pac-Man.

While it’s a little disappointing that we don’t have a “real” Katamari game for the DS(i), there’s a silver lining or two on this particular cloud. The game is a steal at 500 Nintendo points (equivalent to $5 U.S.), and it features the King of All Cosmos, and he’s the best part of any Katamari game anyway.

Well. The rolling is pretty awesome, too. Sigh.

The Katamari Damacy games are beautiful, addictive… and kind of a pain in the butt. You’ve got to get all this stuff, and the King of All Cosmos is so specific, and then there are all the cousins. Who’s got to round them up? You, of course. You have to do everything around the Cosmos. Well, here’s one way to keep those pesky cousins together: hang ‘em on the wall.

Actually, I’m not sure what the motivation was behind the Katamari Cousins Project, but in my imagination, it’s frustration–but the good kind. The kind that results in forty paintings, one cousin per painting. And, of course, a classic central scene to anchor the project. No cows, though.

Of course, I can’t help but wonder what the forty-one paintings might look like if they were rolled into a giant canvas Katamari….

Katamari Damacy is an undeniably awesome franchise, but it’s also a little on the weird side, so it’s not exactly surprising that Keita Takahashi’s next project is a little unusual. Noby Noby Boy puts the player into the shoes role of an unfortunately shaped something charged with eating and stretching your way through a minimalist world.

To what end do you roll and stretch? There’s no telling, but it looks like good destructive fun from this clip, so perhaps rolling and stretching is a purpose unto itself.

Oh, to live such a simple life.

Noby Noby Boy is currently set for release via the PlayStation Network early next year, and while it has not yet been priced for North America, the European download will drop at the ridiculously-low rate of 3.99€.
