Another day, another portable Nintendo 64 mod. The Electus 64 is a handheld Nintendo 64. It’s handheld in the same way that the original Nintendo 64 console is handheld – technically, you can hold either system in your hands if you wished. But the Electus 64 truly is portable, thanks to its 4.3″ widescreen LCD and 4,000mAh battery.

Made by Slipstream, the mod is 5.75″ wide, 7.75″ long and 1.75″ thick. In funny units, it’s as wide as two Game Boys side-by-side, as long as the original Nintendo 64 console and as thick as something that’s 1.75″ thick. Sorry. The 4.3″ screen has both 16:9 and 4:3 modes, but it also has video and audio out ports if you want to play on a bigger screen. The battery is only good for up to 3 hours of gaming, but it comes with adapters so you can plug the Electus 64 into car chargers and standard outlets.

As you’ll see in the gallery below, the mod also has built-in controller ports. There are heatsinks and a fan inside to keep things cool. You can check out the MbB forums for work-in-progress pics of Electus 64.

Slipstream slipped into his entrepeneur alter ego zeusnpanda and put the Electus 64 up for bid on eBay. It’ll be there for a couple more days and is currently at $749 (USD) as of this writing, with a Buy-It-Now price of $995. I still like a shape and size of a couple of the older mods we’ve featured more than the Electus 64, but its case is really beautiful. It’s probably the second thing that people will notice after they get over its size.

As you can see in the picture above, the Funtendo is designed to be used with a NES controller, a Nintendo 64 controller and a Wii controller. Sorry Gamecube fans. It also has a 2GB flash drive that you can fill with emulators and ROMs, which we all know you legally acquired. Just plug Funtendo into a USB port on your PC, and go. One neat feature of the Funtendo is that it lets you use the three controllers at once, so you can use the Wii controller to play an N64 game – or any other game with gamepad support – if you want.

Modders really love the Nintendo 64 – the sheer number of portable mods we’ve featured here on the site tells us that much. Hailrazer is no stranger to the portable console scene, and he’s back with another beautifully done portable N64 mod, which he calls the N64Boy Advance, which is pretty appropriate considering how it looks:

There are a few things to take note of with this mod. First of all its case is not actually a Game Boy Advance case, rather it’s a GBA carrying case that looks like a GBA case. Second, Hailrazer built this one for himself, so he left out a number of parts that he doesn’t really use when he plays. For example you’ll see that it doesn’t have a d-pad. It also doesn’t have a port for a second controller, or an A/V out. Check out Hailrazer’s video below for more details:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

After seeing so many portable N64 mods, I wonder if there’s any way to make the cartridge more portable, i.e. smaller as well. Check out Hailrazer’s post on ModdedbyBacteria for more details on the portable N64.

Got an old N64 lying around? Well if you have the time, patience and talent, you could turn it into a modern-day PC like modder Polvorito has done.

He picked up this old Nintendo 64 at a flea market for about 20 bucks, then gutted it to provide the shell for his new home theater PC. Since his main goal was to build a wireless PC for his living room to stream media and surf the internet from, he didn’t go for the most powerful computer, instead going for something that would fit neatly inside the chassis of the N64.

He decided to go with a Zotac ION ITX motherboard, which conveniently crams sound, graphics, CPU, GPU, Wi-Fi, and HDMI and optical outputs on a single compact board. It’s based on the nVidia ION chipset, and runs an Intel Atom N330 CPU. He wanted the box to be dead silent, so he even went with a 30GB solid state drive for storage. While he originally had hoped he could run fanless, he had to keep a small fan in there to prevent the CPU from overheating. Still, it’s way better than anything I could do.

Polvorito has actually installed OSX on the mutant N64, making it the first official Nintendo 64-based Hackintosh I’ve seen. You can check out the full work log over at The Best Case Scenario.

A Nintendo 64DD along with all the games that have ever been made for it –all nine of ‘em! – are up for grabs on eBay. For those too young to remember, the Nintendo 64DD was an add-on console to the Nintendo 64. The combo was supposed to match up with then newcomer, the PlayStation. It used proprietary 64MB disks, kinda like the old Zip drives. It took 4 years of feet-dragging by Nintendo for the 64DD to be released, and even then only a few units and games were produced. Which makes this stash a rarity, and a must have for video game collectors. I think.

Included in the collection are a 64 DD, a couple of Nintendo mice and keyboards, all 4 Mario Artist games, Doshin the Giant 1 and 2, the “really hard to get” Doshin the Giant demo disk, Japan Pro-Golf Tour 64 DD, SimCity 64DD and an F-Zero X expansion kit. There’s also a Game Boy Pocket Camera for use with the Mario Artist games and a Capture Cartridge, which apparently is a device used to take Mario Artist-compatible photographs using a camera with RCA inputs. There are already 9 bids for the collection, so it is sought after to some extent. Place your bid now at eBay; bid starts at $510 (USD), or if you’re rolling in dough, you can buy it outright for $1,300.

If you’ve still got an N64, you probably haven’t used it in a while. The age of Nintendo’s 64-bit gaming platform didn’t stop Bentomo from shrinking his N64 into a portable form. I have to say that this build is totally amazing, reminding me of the TurboGrafix-16 portable, the TurboExpress.

It took Bentomo 3 months to build the 64 Boy, with a total of over 80 hours of actual work. The handheld N64 has a 3.5-inch screen, an external docking station allowing you to plug in real N64 controllers, an external memory pack slot, and 4-hour battery life.

If you don’t have the technical chops to DIY yourself one of these, good news. The 64 Boy is currently for sale right here. The first person to make Bentomo an offer for $1,000 will get this puppy. Make him an offer he can’t refuse!

Oh, I remember this little game. It was made by Rare after their success with Goldeneye. The game was good, but not up to Goldeneye‘s standard, in my opinion. Well, a port of the original Perfect Dark is coming your way, if you’ve got an Xbox 360 that is.

This is a port of the original game for the Nintendo 64 that came out in 2000. The game will receive updated graphics and will be released in March. It will cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10 USD).

Stuff like this is one of the reasons why I really love my Xbox 360. There are so many great games on XBLA, like Geometry Wars, and others. But what also like is the re-releases and updates of old school games. It appeals to the retro gamer in me. I have to confess that it took at least a week of playing Geometry Wars non-stop before I opened my other normal games when the Xbox 360 was launched.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Hopefully, this version will make up for Perfect Dark Zero.

We already featured Jon Jandran aka Hailrazer’s awesome Dreamcast portable mod, the dreamtrooper. He originally wanted to paint the dreamtrooper’s case black and call it the DarthCast, but he decided to stick with the original console’s white color. But he also ended up stuffing a Nintendo 64 into a Lazer Doodle – a gadget that I have never heard of until now btw – and this time painting the case black made much more sense. 60 hours, One Lazer Doodle case, a Horii Nintendo 64 controller, a PSOne controller, a PSOne LCD screen and of course one whole Nintendo 64 later, Hailrazer finally had his Vader-themed portable console: the Darth64.

It really does look like an upside down Vader helmet. I think Hailrazer should have called it NintenDarth64, but what the hell, it’s an awesome and highly polished mod. He can call it whatever he wants. The system also packs a couple of 5000 mAh rechargeable batteries good for about 3 hours.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Evil Emperor Hailrazer sure sounds a lot like Jack McBrayer. “Everybody knows plumbers can swim. Especially fat little plumbers.” I don’t know why, but that cracked me up.

This insane looking N64 has to be one of the most creative video game casemods I’ve seen in quite a while.

When I first saw the photos of this thing, I actually thought it was some sort of wedding cake. But hiding beneath the Princess Peach’s castle shell is a fully-functional Nintendo 64 console.

The castle design really does look like the original 3D Princess’ castle in Super Mario 64 – except you can look all the way around this one without fumbling to use the camera on your controller – and the texture maps are better on this one.

According to the eBay listing, “the exterior of the castle has been molded to look like the bricks and roof tiles, then painted. The mural of Princess Peach is a very detailed mosaic and the five flags are made of cloth.” The modder also managed to maintain all of the original ventilation, even when the top half of the castle is put in place.

If you can believe it, this thing was on eBay for 10 days, and after a dozen bids already has sold to one very lucky bidder for just $100 bucks. I bet they could have sold it for lots more if they had only waited for me to report on it

It’s becoming quite normal for amazing DIY portable systems to pop up everywhere. If it can play games, someone’s going to try to make it portable, and the Nintendo 64 is one of the most popular candidates for such projects. So what’s a portable aficionado to do to stand out in such a crowd? Why, give it a theme.

The N64 never looked so good in green before! But it’s not just any green, but Zelda green. After all, the N64 is home to the fan-renowned title The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time.

Oh… well–Majora’s Mask is pretty good, too.

This portable system is less than eight inches wide, which means it’s wider than a Nintendo DS, but not quite so long as the PlayStation Portable. At 1.5 inches thick, that’s truly a tiny N64! It’ll even take the expansion pack.

The Nintendo Sixtyfree Lite-R: the past of gaming, futurized in handheld form. While playing this shrunken, portable N64 might be a challenge, particularly when it comes to, say, some of the console’s excellent first-person shooters, it certainly looks good.

BenHeck.com forumite SifuF cut away half the size of the original N64 and added a headphone jack to perfect this handheld design. Cartridges slip elegantly into the back of this compact console. It’s so small, however, that there’s no room for internal batteries; when you want to play, you’ve got rely on external power. The sacrifices we make for size.

I guess it’s pretty on the inside, if you’re into that sort of thing. Here’s the Nintendo Sixtyfree Lite-R without its clothes on:

But who says that video games can’t get in on the paper foldin’ action?

Individually cut and folded by Flickr contributor Lidia F. (aka “This Fffire“), these tiny Power Stars look just like their doppelgangers from the Super Mario game series (other than the defective ones with faces in the upper right corner). Lidia says she was inspired by Super Mario 64, so clearly she hasn’t upgraded her console in a while!

Each little Power Star is made from a single strip of paper, then hand-painted with yellow acrylics and embellished with some Sharpie eyeballs. Now, I can’t really figure out how in the heck she managed to make these, but if you’re out there reading this post, feel free to share some tips so we can all make hundreds of these tiny stars.
