It has been several months since we talked about the Nintendo DS game Wappy Dog. The game is now officially available to purchase just in time for holiday gift giving. If you have kid that wants a real pet, you might start them with this virtual pet simulation. Rather than just a digital pet, Wappy Dog actually has a real robot dog that kids can play with.

The player has to raise Wappy though five different stages of development. The stages range from a puppy up to an adult dog. As the player is able to take care of the pet and as it grows the behavior and voice of the robot pet changes as well. Each of the pets is customizable and comes with stickers.

The robot dog accessory will bark at the player and the game will translate what the barks mean for the players. The pet has a digital mode so the player can nurture the virtual pooch even away from the hardware portion. The game is only for Nintendo DS and sells for $49.99 (USD) including the robot dog accessory. This is one pet that won’t poop in the yard and parents won’t end up having to feed.

That’s right, ignite your dreams, burn them all down, because you’re a parking attendant. Here’s the groovy teaser for the game:

In a time when extreme stuff like Madworld and Bulletstorm exist, you have to have some huge balls to release a game where the ultimate rush is in pushing your parking skills to the limit. Here are some screenshots of the game. They really captured the garish look of the 80s.

Video game emulators have long been available for both iOS and Android phones, provided you’re willing to jailbreak your device. There are NES, SNES and even PlayStation emulators. However, this is the first time that I’ve seen a Nintendo DS emulator for smartphones. But before you wet their pants with delight, let me lower your expectations. The Tiger Lab Android app is actually just a proof of concept, made to show that DS games can be run on smartphones.

Tiger King, makers of the app, say that the app is a very early prototype and is “very slow, so you so you shall not expect to play NDS game with this emulator.” But as smartphones become more and more powerful, it’ll only be a matter of time before a functional version of the app becomes a reality. If you really want to test the app, you can get Tiger Lab at AppBrain for free.

If I was Nintendo, I’d consider this a warning shot. The market is certainly there, so maybe they should consider making their own emulator for future smartphones and then sell DS games on the Android marketplace. As for iOS devices? I doubt Apple would approve such an app, even if it came from Nintendo.

At a Nintendo meeting last week, company president Satoru Iwata unveiled a necessary accessory for a game that’s on the wrong platform. What am I talking about? The upcoming Pokémon typing tutor game for the Nintendo DS, called Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS. The game will come with a Bluetooth keyboard. The game’s cartridge will have a built-in Bluetooth communication card, since the DS doesn’t have Bluetooth support. I’m really curious why this is being released on a portable device, since it seems kind of absurd to carry two devices just to play one game.

Looking at the keyboard though, I’m guessing that Nintendo is planning to have more games or apps that will support the keyboard, otherwise why include Control, Alt and Fn keys to a typing game meant for kids? One immediate upside to the default keyboard layout is that it’s compatible with other gadgets as well. Iwata mentioned that some Nintendo employees were able to use the keyboard with their iPhones and Android phones, although he did imply that Nintendo won’t guarantee compatibility to other devices. Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS will be released in Japan this April. No word on price and international release date, and why this wasn’t released on the Wii instead.

Granted, blaues01′s hack is quite complicated and only works with Rhythm Tengoku, but the important thing is that his set up works – when he swings his sword, the A button is pressed almost instantly. That and he makes sheating and unsheathing a sword look bad ass:

RPGs and other games with rich fictional histories have long had a select few fans that could cite obscure trivia like they were just telling the time, like the famous Red Shirt Guy. You’d think that with such voluminous amounts of fake facts (fakts?) to keep track of, games like WoW or Elder Scrolls would have come up with this innovation. But no, it had to come from a little Nintendo DS game. What innovation am I talking about? Hyperlinked conversations, of course:

Camelot Software, developers of upcoming game Golden Sun: Dark Dawn – the first DS game of the Golden Sun series – were smart enough to include links to information about people, places and events when they are mentioned in conversations. In the example shown above, tapping Matthew’s name would make the encyclopedia entry to the right pop up on the top screen of the DS. Simple but extremely practical, especially if you’re new to the series. This is one feature that needs to be emulated industry-wide. It’s a shame Golden Sun’s doesn’t have hyperlinks within the hyperlinked encyclopedia entries, though.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn will be released on November 29, 2010. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $35 (USD).

No word on whether or not this Sonic Screwdriver can open any locks or repair equipment, but it can definitely be used to play games. I can’t figure out which DS model the case is designed for, but since it’s a padded zip case design, I’m betting you could squeeze in a DS, DS Lite or DSi – but if you’ve got a DSi XL, you’ll be out of luck.

The kit sells for £14.99 (appx. $24 USD), and starts shipping on 10/29. At this point, you’ll have to live in the UK if you want one, as it’s only available for pre-order on Amazon UK for now.

For the lucky people who have lived their lives blissfully unaware of the game, LovePlus – or as they call it Japan, Rabu Purasu – is a Nintendo DS dating simulator. Players choose from one of three girls to court and date. Personally I don’t find the concept too weird. It’s the effect that unnerves me. Case in point – LovePlus gamers trekking to a town’s referenced in the game. This new update on the power of this game should not be as depressing as the earlier news about the guy who married his LovePlus girlfriend…and yet it is.

Yes, that’s a guy posing with his virtual girlfriend, thanks to a phone app released by LovePlus developer Konami. The video below may drive you mad:

*Gasp* Oh my god holy crap I can’t believe that guy is still using a DS Phat! Seriously though, I choose not to go mad. I think of it this way – some people are addicted to violent games, some are addicted to romantic games. No. That doesn’t justify it at all. When a real town experiences an increase in tourism because men are vacationing with their virtual griflfriends, one has to ask if one is still in the real world or in a Ghost in the Shell episode. And when one of these men can’t see the sights because his virtual girlfriend is not in the mood…one still feels that teen werewolves are ten times more disgusting.

Sure, gorillas have opposable thumbs and can rip a man’s arm off and beat him with it, but they lack those leet gaming skilz. You could totally take this gorilla in a game of Donkey Kong. It’s not often you get to see a gorilla trying to play a Nintendo DS.

This fuzzy guy came by his DS when a kid visiting the San Francisco zoo accidentally dropped it inside the gorilla habitat. I hear all was fine until his little gorilla brother started staring at him and asking if it was his turn yet.

The gorilla tried all he could to figure the thing out turning it forward, backwards and holding it really close to his head. A trainer at the zoo was able to trade the DS for an apple and gave the console back to the boy who dropped it. It reportedly still worked though it was scratched and covered with gorilla slobber.

I wonder if the game will have pokémans so tough that you’ll have to use all six of your monsters at once just to beat one of them. Something like a Yiazmat Pokémon. •shiver•

It’s true that the DSi XL has got larger screens, but Olivier’s design makes them even bigger.
Olivier is a 3D artist and I like what he did with the DS. The dual widescreens look like they’re each about the size of a PSP display. Sure the DSi XL is cool, but wouldn’t you like to have even bigger screens, and 3D, glasses-free images?

All and all, we hope that Nintendo takes a peek at these designs and uses them as inspiration for their real 3DS design!

… possible even two. Legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto told Forbes that he’s “devoting” himself to finding out more ways to get the Nintendo DS as well as the Wii into schools. Miyamoto also said that Nintendo will start “to roll out the Nintendo DS system in junior high and elementary schools in Japan starting in the new school year.”

That statement cracked me up; makes it sound as if the schools in Japan don’t have any say in the matter. But I guess it’s worth a try, to keep kids stay focused on their studies and not on distractions, like gaming.

This isn’t the first time that Nintendo has marketed the Nintendo DS as a learning aid, but a Miyamoto educational game or software? Learning’s about to get a lot more fun.

According to Nikkei, McDonald’s Japan is developing a Nintendo DS training program for part-time employees. The program is called eSmart, and will cost the fastfood giant upwards of ¥200,000,000 (approx. $2.2M USD). McDonald’s hopes that the software will cut training time by half, because just about everyone in Japan is familiar with Nintendo’s portable gaming device.

I don’t own a Nintendo DS, so this time I’m not being sarcastic: DS owners, do you think controlling vehicles on your portable would be more fun if you had a virtual steering wheel? Because it seems that Nintendo thinks that it’s a great idea: the company filed a patent for a “Driving Game Steering Wheel Simulation Method and Apparatus” last November.

You can check out the full details at the USPTO‘s website, but here’s the short version: it’s a touch screen steering wheel, apparently for a portable gaming device, as shown in the above sketches. It may be controlled using either a stylus or fingers. It may have support for vibration. The steering’s sensitivity may be adjustable.

If you ask me, I think a stylus-controlled steering wheel is a dumb, dumb, DUMB idea. The whole point of the interface is to make a driving game more “natural”; why add it if you’re going to gimp it with a mediating tool, i.e. the stylus? But as I said, I’ve never used a DS, so maybe I’m wrong.

Here’s betting this won’t be around for long, with Nintendo’s itchy cease-and-desist finger, but for now, the homebrew Super Smash Bros Rumble game for the DS exists, and it’s definitely worth checking out.

All jokes about the mighty fist of Nintendo aside, SSB Rumble has been around for over a year, and while this latest version is labeled Demo 0.7, there’s a lot to explore in the download. Clearly, a lot of work has gone into the project, and the game manages both a unique flair and the traditional feel of Nintendo’s beloved mascot-pounding game.

The game does tease unlockable characters that are actually unavailable–that’s one of the marks of its unfinished status. But there’s an impressive number of characters already, so if you’ve got a DS and a homebrew cart, you might want to go on a little download adventure.

If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not Love Plus is a decent dating sim, wonder no more: one guy thought it was so good he actually went and married it. Or her. Her being one of the game’s virtual girlfriends, Nene Anegasaki.

Ah, what a sweet young bride. So… uh… animated.

The thing that sets Love Plus apart from other dating sims of this time is that it revolves around actual interaction of this type… it’s just that I’m not sure anyone expected someone to take it to this extreme. With Love Plus, as soon as you get the girl, you’re supposed to take her out and engage with her in the real world. As in, you take her on dates, where she probably eats as much as a real girl (but at least she costs less).

The proud new groom is planning a reception for November 22. He has invited the media to attend, so I’m sure there will be lots of interesting footage to check out. I wonder if anyone is going to ask him how he feels about all those other Nenes out there with all their boyfriends.

The rumors were right – Nintendo officially unveiled the DSi LL, which is basically a Nintendo DSi but with much larger 4.2-inch screens, a 93% increase over the 3.2-inch screens on the DSi. The DSi LL also has 2 pens, a relatively jumbo sized 5-inch pen and a smaller pen that’s still slightly larger than the touch pen on the DSi. The big N says that customers have long wished for a DS with a bigger screen. Did customers also wish for a five-letter product name that is not a word and has to be said letter by letter?

The larger screen makes the portable system more suited for ”for internet and as a music player as the larger screen is able to display letters and characters in a bigger font.” I don’t have a DS so I don’t know if the browser and the speed of browsing are okay or not. Whatever the case it’ll still be the same because the DSi LL’s innards are pretty much the same as the DSi’s. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the DSi and the DSi LL, as seen on Nintendo’s website.

The Nintendo DSi LL will come in three colors: Wine Red, Natural White and Dark Brown, and will go on sale in Japan starting November 21 for ¥20,000 (appx. $220 USD). No release dates have been announced for other markets. So DS fans, are you happy with what Nintendo gave you?
