I don’t write anything down if I can get around it. I have a budget I follow each month to keep me from blowing all my money on gadgets and car parts. I could write it down old school style, but I use Excel so it can do the calculations for me. If I need to go to the grocery store, I have my wife text the list to me. I can’t read my own handwriting, so it’s all digital for me.

If you like to use digital stuff to take notes and write things as well, but occasionally have to hand write things out you will like the Icon notebook from Barcelona Spain’s BrigadaCreativa. This thing is sort of a symbol of the duality of writing today. It’s an old school paper notepad, but it looks like a digital icon you would find on a computer.

The notepad can be had in a three pack for about $24 (USD) or in a single for about $10. The pads have 80-pages inside and are DIN A5 size pages measuring 148mm x 210mm. The only downside if you need normal paper is that the folded over corner apparently means the pages are flat on one corner as well.

This isn’t really a tablet PC per se, but it aims at replacing paper pads efficiently with a special kind of rewriteable LCD display.

The Boogie Board Paperless LCD Writing Tablet is made by Improv Electronics and uses something called Reflex LCD, which is a pressure-sensitive, flexible plastic LCD that doesn’t require any power to retain what’s written on it. The only power needed is from a small watch battery to erase what’s been written on the screen.

Would you believe that the retail MSRP of this tablet is $29.97 (USD)? The reason why this is cool is that a single Boogie Board can handle up to 50,000 reuses. That means it’s about 1/16th the cost of paper – assuming you pay about 1 cent for a sheet. The Boogie Board’s Reflex LCD is highly responsive to variable amounts of pressure, meaning that it’s comparable to the experience of using a pencil on a sheet of paper.

All that’s left is for a version of the Boogie Board that would let you transfer the documents off the screen into a file of some sort. Still, it’s a great first step into the right direction. You can order one now over on Amazon.

Whether you’re a professional app developer who wants to sketch interface design ideas, or you just want a cool notepad on your desk, you’ll want to check out Notepods, clever pads of paper designed to look like an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Each Notepod is a pad of 100 pages of paper with a simulated iPhone screen on the front, and a handy grid of graph paper on the back. While a Notepod pad is a bit thicker than a real iPhone, it eventually gets super thin as you use up sheets.

They’re also perfect for going completely old school and cut out all technology from your life. Heck, you can even draw yourself a couple of paper fart apps if you want.

Notepods come in sets of 3 pads for $17.95 (USD) each, and are shipped from Australia – so they may take some time to get to you, depending on where you live. You can order a set here.

(P.S.: Notepods work great when combined with Design Commissions’ metal iPhone UI template).
