With prices around $100,000 (USD) the cost is a bit insane, but these displays sure look good. Heck, if I had lots of money to burn, I’d probably want to get one of these (not).

The company behind these unique OLED-based artworks is called Nanobrick, and their displays are called Miyoul. Some samples of their displays were showcased last week’s CES show.

Each different display has several OLED screens, which are from 3.3-inches to 4.1-inches. They are designed for viewing digital photos and videos – each one custom shot to match the sculptural display. Sounds a bit obscene at this price, but hey, if money is no object for you, why not?

The best of the Miyoul is the one called Flowers. The others look pretty strange to me. Here’s some video the guys from OWLE shot over at CES where you can see some samples of Miyoul in action.

As we look for more ways to generate energy-efficient light, we’ve seen a gradual move away from the warm glow of incandescent light, to the ugly pinkish hues of CFL, to the strange blueish-white point-source light produced by LEDs. And frankly, none of those are nearly as cool as what awaits us in our futures – OLED lighting.

Organic Light Emitting Diodes are starting to emerge not only in flat-panel displays, but numerous prototypes of OLED lighting fixtures are starting to rear their heads. The great thing about OLED is not only that it is self-illuminating and eco-friendly, but that it’s not a point-source of light. Instead, OLED can be built into flexible panels and produced in specialized shapes, sizes and colors – providing a wonderful ambient glow. There are even transparent oled panels that you can see through, but that can still generate bright ambient lighting. Philips has even made some amazing interactive lighting fixtures using their new Lumiblade OLED technology.

In addition to Philips, there are many companies working on OLED lighting concepts, including GE, OSRAM, Siemens, Visionox, Samsung, and others – and it’s only a matter of time before we start to see mass-produced commercial lighting fixtures that use the technology. I see a bright future ahead of us.

The television display size war is officially over. Mitsubishi showed off a 155-inch OLED display at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) 2009 in Japan. If you’re going “155-inches! ZOMG” right now, then you’ll probably die of excitement when I tell you that the display is infinitely expandable. As in you could create a display that’s literally as large as a city. BAM!

The display is called Diamond Vision, and it’s actually made of smaller displays that combine to form Voltron a super display of sorts. Aside from minimizing costs, the modular design also makes it possible to build a curved display.

The display’s isn’t pure win however because as stated in the video below, Mitsubishi estimates that the OLED will last approximately 20,000 hours – about 2 years and 100 days – which is a fairly short amount of time.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Nevertheless, I don’t think us normal folks have any right to be disappointed – or excited – about Mitsubishi’s breakthrough because the display is meant to be installed in public areas for ads and such. Besides, what the hell would we do with an infinitely expandable display? I’d rather have a 19-inch TV that lasts 5 years than this thing.

It’s been a while since we featured a cool digital watch here on technabob. That’s not for lack of trying – I just haven’t seen anything particularly different in a while. So I was happy when I stumbled onto these funky new digital timepieces from Alessi.

Designed by renowned architect Will Alsop + Federico Grazzini, the Daytimer watch features a high-contrast blue OLED digital display, framed by a bold geometric polyurethane case.

Instead of just laying there like any old watch, the Daytimer features a 3-dimensional polygonal case structure that’s just slightly askew. As time passes, the display cycles through nine graphics (of what, I don’t know) on its OLED screen when you press the button to recall the time.

The Daytimer comes in four colors: red, green, purple and black, and is available from Emmo Home for $120 (USD).

Designer Vadim Kibardin has found a way to make the ever-useful clock be more versatile aesthetics-wise with his black & white clock concept. It consists of just four OLED digits – no case or box or other parts that might clash with the style in your house. Kibardin’s awesome idea is made even awesomer by the addition of a light sensor, which enables the digits function in an inverted manner, to display the time in white if the surrounding is dark, and in black if it’s bright.

Each digit is powered by a lithium-ion accumulator. The controls for the clock are touch-sensitive (although I don’t know where exactly they’re located).

Kibardin is currently looking for a manufacturer that will help make his brilliant idea make the leap from dream to $$$$ reality. More details can be found on Kibardin’s site.

If you’ve been craving the light up keys of Art Lebedev’s OLED Optimus Maxiumus Keyboard, but don’t want to take out a second mortgage on your house to buy one, now you can get yourself a taste of programmable OLED goodness without breaking the bank.

United Keys OLED keyboard keep their prices on planet Earth by including only monochrome displays, and letting you program just 9 of the keys.

Each keyboard comes with a 3×3 matrix of custom keys, each of which contains a tiny 0.7″ yellow OLED screen with a bright high-contrast 64×64 pixel display. The keyboards ship with a OLED Manager software (Windows XP/Vista only) which lets you create custom icons and save macro functions for each key. The coolest part of the software is that you can set the keys to load in a unique profile for each application (as well as a default key set), so you can set different macros and icons for Photoshop than you do for Excel, and so forth.

The only real downside to OLED screens are their relatively short life span. With just a 40,000 hour display life (at 50% brightness), you’ll end up throwing this keyboard in the trash after about 4-1/2 years of continuous use.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

United Keys keyboards are available in either a full 103-key keyboard ($249 USD) with the function keys on the left side, or in a standalone 9-key keypad ($199 USD), which you can set on either side of your current keyboard. While they’re definitely no Maximus, they’re definitely the cheapest OLED keyboards you can get at this point.

[Looking for something more colorful and don't care if it's OLED? Don't forget about the Luxeed RGB LED keyboard.]

Despite their bright, energy-efficient displays, OLED (organic light emitting diode) timepieces are still be few and far between. So I was pleased to see another new watch jump on the OLED bandwagon.

The Infinity Apus Dark Force digital watch features a luminescent blue OLED screen, which really pops out from the stainless and black backdrop. It’s waterproof to 3 ATM, and features a durable mineral crystal face to protect the delicate organic crystal display that lies just millimeters below.

The display shows the current time, day and date using an unconventional typeface for a watch, using a serif font (looks like Times New Roman to me). Travel a lot? Sleep a lot? Infinity offers dual time zones as well as dual alarms.

As the hours and minutes slip away, the numerals gradually slide out of place, sort of like the numbers on an old mechanical gas pump.

And if black leather isn’t your thing, there’s also a version of the Infinity with a white leather band.

You can find a number of these over on eBay, with starting bids as low as a few bucks, but likely to sell for just under $100 USD.

A while back, I showed you guys a pretty cool looking OLED watch from the fashion house of Diesel. That model was especially difficult to come by, and featured a tiny little monochrome blue OLED screen . The latest digital watch from Diesel amps up the organic light emitting goodness by adding a second color to the display.

The Diesel DZ7086 mens’ watch features a bright dual-color screen with both blue and green OLED phosphors. In addition to displaying the time in traditional numeric formats, it can display a text version (i.e. “Eleven Twenty Seven”), along with four different on-screen animations when you press the appropriate button.

The modern digital watch comes housed in a black plastic case with stainless steel lugs at each side. The black wristband is nicely crafted from leather, and in case you plan on banging your new watch around a bit, the display is protected by a durable, scratch-resistant mineral crystal face.

List price for the DZ7086 on the Diesel website is $150 USD, but you might be able to find a better deal with a little digging over on Amazon.

Like old school LED watches, the time and date are concealed behind a mirrored crystal until you press a button on the side of the watch.

While I’m not sure how accurate this promotional photo is, it looks like the display is more of a cool blue-green color than the grey shown in the first images.

The stainless model (DZ7080) lists for $215. There’s also a leather version (DZ7079) for around $200.

(UPDATE 12/27/2007: I had to remove the purchase links, since the company that was linked to appears to have closed up shop. Post a comment if you manage to find these watches anywhere else).

From the looks of the picture, the watches will come in stainless and leather finishes, and will have a cool multi-colored display. I had seen one of these in action over on YouTube a few weeks back, but wasn’t able to find out much about it, so I didn’t say anything.

To put that in perspective, the displays are just about the thickness of heavy card stock paper. The initial panels are just 2.2-inches diagonal, and planned for use in mobile phones and other portable gadgets.

Samsung plans on ramping up production of the super-thin displays in the coming months, but initial yields are only around 40 percent, meaning about 60 percent of displays produced end up in the scrap pile. That will result in higher retail prices for now. However, as OLED production quality increases, screen size will increase and prices should fall.

The $199 device lets you wirelessly stream music (ATRAC, AAC and WMA formats) from your PC to your Bravia home entertainment system (assuming you have one of the models with Sony’s proprietary Digital Media Port.) While the tiny 3-inch black cube looks really cool, it does have one significant limitation – it can’t stream DRMed tracks from any place other than the Sony Connect store.

Surprisingly, it also doesn’t appear to stream the files in the ubiquitous MP3 format. This is a clear case where form and function didn’t go hand in hand. Too bad.

OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology has been gradually gaining momentum as a display medium for everything cell phones, portable media players and even some upcoming computer monitors. But did you know OLED can be amped up enough to generate a meaningful source of illumination?

GE Global Research has been working on a prototype of an OLED light source that could be the shape of things to come. The research project started out by building a small 1-inch square prototype, but GE engineers gradually ramped up the technology to the point where they had a large 2-foot square panel generating a significant amount of white light.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

GE is now working on ways to drive the production cost of OLED technology down to a point where it could become a practical substitute for other sources of illumination. Since OLED technologies are flexible and can be engineered to change colors, there is potential for all sorts of unique lighting and display applications.

At this week’s CES show, Sony showed off an OLED TV with that claims to have an unbelievable 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio. From the looks of the photo below, (taken by the folks over at Engadget,) the contrast does look pretty darned impressive:

The 27-inch prototype’s organic light emitting diode panel also features a wider than NTSC color gamut and full 1080p resolution. While I’d be surprised if anyone has lab equipment that could even affirm Sony’s contrast ratio claims, I’m still taken aback by the quality of the image. Since OLEDs actually directly emit light, they can theoretically display much richer colors than backlit displays like LCDs.

Of course, we’re still quite a way off from seeing large OLED displays in real world applications, due to the typically short life span of the organic compounds used in their manufacture. For instance, the blue component of OLED displays typically only lasts for about 5,000 hours (about 1/10th the life of a typical plasma screen.) Recent advances have made some strides in improving the lifespan to as high as 20,000 hours, so there is hope for the future of OLED as a display technology.

Little is known about the display life at this point, but many current OLED displays have a fairly short lifespan.
