When it comes to affordable home theater gear that sounds good, Onkyo is a favorite for many folks. The company has some very expensive offerings as well, but it has a new home theater in a box system that has been unveiled that has solid specs, and won’t break the bank. The new system is called the HT-S5400.

The 5400 has a 7.1-channel sound and it has loads of features like support for 3D video, lossless audio support from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and it has an Audio Return channel. The receiver has four HDMI inputs and one output so you can shoot multiple video and audio signals out to your TV or projector with one cable.

The receiver in the system also has a front USB port, Audyssey 2EQ, and the kit includes a powered subwoofer. The player also has a seven-channel speaker set with four satellites, and two-way front speakers with a center channel. Everything you need but your content sources, and TV or projector is in the box. The system will ship in April for $599 (USD).

I was a child of the 80′s, so I tend to remember all the weird stuff we had back them. The bright colors, questionable wardrobes, and gigantic electronics of the period are what I grew up with. Onkyo has unveiled a new line of audio gear that includes a range of audio components that has some retro 80′s style.

The only one of the new components that really looks like the 80′s I remember is the M-5000R amp with the big analog gauges on the front. My dad had a stereo with some gages like that on the front when I was a kid. Onkyo is showing of the M-5000R amp, the P-3000R pre-amp, and the C-7000R CD player at CES.

The gear from Onkyo has high-end features like DIDRC works to improve sound quality. The P-3000R preamp has AES/EBU digital connectors and USB inputs for PC audio. It also has a Burr-Brown DA and more. The M5000R amp has 8-ohm FTC rating and 80W of power per channel with a dynamic power rating of over 450W into 1 ohm. The C-7000R CD player is a high-end device as well with a silent disc mechanist and die-cast aluminum tray. The P-3000R sells for $1699, the M-5000R sells for $2499, and the C-7000R sells for $1499.

The system will offer a feature set and look that’s very similar to the popular BOSE Wave Sound System. It features an onboard slot-loading CD player and a digital FM/AM tuner. The speakers feature Onkyo’s “AERO Acoustic Drive” speaker system which is designed to create a room-filling sound from a small cabinet.

While the amplifier is rated at just 5W per channel, the system should be more than sufficient for small rooms such as bedrooms and offices. The CBX-Z1 should be on sale in Japan on November 30th. Pricing has not been announced, but it’s likely to be around 50,000 yen (appx. $419 USD), and we don’t know if the system will be sold outside of Japan.
