This watch has a distinctive face, that looks like it was folded by an expert at origami. British designer Benjamin Hubert created this for Italian accessory maker Nava. The Plicate watch has its increments integrated as three dimensional surfaces, which definitely gives it a cool look.

Plicate’s display is modeled after the pleats found in folded paper fans. The strap has some interesting features as well. The underside of the strap is designed to let the air flow between the band and arm, preventing the build up of sweat. The buckle is replaced by an asymmetrical clasp, which allows users to easily remove the watch, while keeping it securely fastened.

Plicate is the second watch that Benjamin Hubert created for Nava, and it was on display during the 2012 Salone del Mobile. There’s no word yet as to where or when you can buy the Plicate watch, but you might want to keep an eye out on the Nava website.

As my sister has told me, it’s sometimes a pain to travel when you’ve got babies because of the strollers. It takes a while to fold the entire thing and set it up, it takes a bit longer to make your baby leave your arms and sit in it (if you’ve got a particularly needy baby, then, well, it will take much longer), and another while to fold the entire thing back up again for storage.

So to my sister and to all the other parents in the world, be prepared to welcome the Origami Stroller into your lives to make stroller handling easier and more convenient. With the turn of a knob and push of the button, the stroller either folds itself ready for storage or unfolds itself to be ready for use.

Aside from that, this is also the first stroller of its kind to come bundled with so many features. It can charge your cellphone, count your mileage, and comes with daytime running lights and pathway lights for low-light conditions. It also comes with an LCD display and sensors that detect if there’s a child in the seat or not. You know, to prevent folding it up when your kid’s still sitting on it.

Sounds amazing, right? The Origami Stroller launches on January 6, 2012 and is priced at – brace yourselves – $849.99(USD).

I’ve always been amazed by the mind-bending illusions of artist M.C. Escher. His perplexing worlds definitely had more than a little bit to do with the thematic concepts and set designs in the equally awesome Inception. So when I saw this Escher scene brought to life in three dimensions, I had to at least give it a mention.

Paper artist Bryan Peele (a.k.a. Crackpot Papercraft) managed to build a recreation of Escher’s classic Relativity illustration. You know, the one with a series of impossible staircases? I’ve been staring at this thing for a while now, and Crackpot definitely did a great job recreating Escher’s twisted space. All that’s missing are a few paper people walking upstairs, downstairs and sidestairs(?) to complete the effect.

Even more amazing is the fact that this befuddling scene was cut entirely out of a single sheet of 8-1/2″ x 11″ cardstock, without any glue or other adhesives.

If you’re feeling so inspired, Crackpot has even provided a template for you to print out and make your own. I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m going to say you need some pretty mad X-Acto knife and paper-folding skills if you plan on trying this yourself.

Be sure to check out Crackpot Papercraft’s flickr photostream for a bunch of his other cool geometric papercraft creations.

I am not artsy at all. I can’t draw, I can’t paint, and I am not the sort to make crafts. About as artsy as I get is building something out of LEGO on occasion or making the occasional scale model with my kids. I have always thought that origami was cool, but the chances of me folding paper correctly are slim.

Artist Anja Markiewicz has taken the art of origami to new highs by making the art very small. I have no idea how the artist is able to fold things so tiny and still with such precision. I will assume it involves magnifying glasses and tweezers.

My favorites are the tiny snowflake and the purple dragon. I’d like to see instructions for origami this small to try my hand at it.

More examples can be found over on Anja’s Flickr page.

One of Elecom’s latest wireless mice, the look of the Orime is supposed to be a reference to the ancient Japanese art of origami. Either that or first generation PlayStation games. Whatever the inspiration, I wonder if anyone bothered to test the usability of this device.

The Orime was designed with the help of nendo, who also had a hand in the conception of Elecom’s tailed mice. But unlike that design, which is quirky but practical, the Orime seems to have been designed for its novel look alone.

Look at those pointed peaks. Unless its case is made of some soft material, I don’t see how anyone could stand to use one of these for even a handful of seconds. Techie masochists and mice collectors can order the Orime from GeekStuff4U for about $84 (USD).

Yoda kinda looks like a potted plant, doesn’t he? Anyway you can get this origami sculpture from Catamation’s Etsy shop for appx. $24 (USD). Be quick about it too, because there’s only one of this remaining; Catamation is having difficulty finding more of that special Yoda skin paper so there’s no telling if and when more will be made.

Brian Chan has made a few impressive origami, including an Iron Man mask and a sort of Iron Man action figure that’s completely made out of paper. Brian is an MIT staffer, but after having a look at the plans he’s got on his website, it makes me wonder if you need a degree from MIT to be able to duplicate these.

The only origami I ever made were paper cranes, and they were pretty simple. That’s the opposite of Brian’s Iron Man, which looks insanely complicated. Still, the end result is pretty awesome. Naturally, Brian used the appropriately gold and red paper so that his Iron Man looks the part.

I wonder if he’ll tackle War Machine next. I could see kids playing with these origami, so you could replace some action figures with these ones made out of paper, but good luck trying to fold it the right way. It’s probably going to take some trial and error to get this done…

She calls her concept the Origami Handset, although I think it makes more sense to call it a pop-up handset. It starts out as a flat sheet, but when you press on the sides the ends pop up, transforming it into a handset.

It’s a unique concept, but unless it’s made with recycled paper I don’t think I’d like a disposable paper handset to be mass-produced.

A team of scientists at MIT Cambridge have developed a prototype of a “programmable matter” which can automatically change its shape when electrical impulses are applied to it.

A demonstration of the technology was put together using a sheet of the material, which automatically folds itself into various shapes. This “self-folding origami” is made from a custom fabricated material with triangular sections moved thin-foil actuators and magnets embedded into the flexible surface. The prototype sheet has 32 tiles, and can fold itself into the shape of a boat and a paper airplane as you can see in this video clip:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The programmable matter could someday lead to materials that could take on multiple forms, such as a plate that could turn into a bowl or a cup. One more ambitious use could be to create robots that automatically change form to adapt to their environment. They’ve got a long way to go before they’ve got a T-1000 on their hands, but it’s still pretty cool stuff, even if they just get it to make some origami unicorns for now.

This new mp3 player concept lets you play with its shape in order to come up with the icons that you need in order to control your music. It’s called the Play Mp3 Player.

So basically, you have to fold the player in half, thus forming the icon ” ▶” in order to play your music. To rewind, slide one of the triangles away and you get ” ▶▶”. To stop the music, you just unfold it to form ” ■ “.

Ultimately, this looks like a pretty cool design, but it seems like it would be a pain to constantly be folding those icons. And that hinge would probably break all the time. I just hope that it comes with a backup plan.

These gigantic origami tigers signal the beginning of another Year of the Tiger, which will be shortly coming up after Chinese New Year on February 14th.

These origami tigers were designed by the Australian firm LAVA and they were made to raise the awareness of tigers as an endangered species.

They are powered by low-power LEDs and were constructed out of aluminum as well as Barrisol skin. This makes them really striking day or night. They stand a whopping 8.2 feet high by 23 feet long. However, they only weigh 441 lbs, which isn’t much considering their size.

They kind of look unreal, like a cartoon that’s decided to appear in real life. For some reason, I’d expect them to morph into robots, or something like that.

The origami tigers are being set up in front of the Customs House in Sydney, Australia, where they will be on display from February 11th through March 14th, 2010.

When I think of Origami, I usually think of little paper swans, or maybe the unicorn that Edward James Olmos made in Blade Runner. But who says that video games can’t get in on the paper foldin’ action?

Individually cut and folded by Flickr contributor Lidia F. (aka “This Fffire“), these tiny Power Stars look just like their doppelgangers from the Super Mario game series (other than the defective ones with faces in the upper right corner). Lidia says she was inspired by Super Mario 64, so clearly she hasn’t upgraded her console in a while!

Each little Power Star is made from a single strip of paper, then hand-painted with yellow acrylics and embellished with some Sharpie eyeballs. Now, I can’t really figure out how in the heck she managed to make these, but if you’re out there reading this post, feel free to share some tips so we can all make hundreds of these tiny stars.
