You might remember that HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion last year. After that they faced poor sales of their HP webOS devices, then HP decided to put an end to producing webOS devices. But some people are wondering if they really gave webOS a fair chance. HP said they would invest heavily in making webOS a success, but did they really? It seems like they could have tried harder.

If you were paying attention to all of this you may have been one of the lucky ones that got some bargain prices on the last day of their retail stores. The Veer was selling for $50(USD), the Pixi for $25(USD). If you bought 4, the Pixi was just $15(USD).

Researchers from Tokyo’s University of Electro-Communications are working on a ridiculous new interface for the iPhone, which allows users to simulate the sensation of being tickled. Why actually tickle the palm of your hand when you can have an App for that, right?

When the iPhone is placed on top of your palm, an image of a palm (not yours) loads onto the screen, and then you can rub your finger on the touchscreen, tricking your brain into thinking you’re tickling your own palm. In addition, they’ve set up a two-person mode which lets you tickle someone else’s hand from across the room.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

While the visual illusion should be enough to trigger the sensation of being tickled in most people, the addition of vibration (currently done via audio, and not the iPhone’s vibration motor) seals the deal.

The whole idea seems completely surperfluous to me, but mabe there’s some sort of remote interaction idea here which would allow couples to feel each other up from afar. Between this, the remote-kissing machine, and advances in teledildonics, pretty soon you’ll never have to be bothered with actually touching anyone again.

Considering the fact that I type like a million hours each day, you might think I know how to type like a normal person. You would be wrong. I skipped typing class in high school because all the cheerleaders were taking cooking class. Priorities.

I have a bastardized typing style that is a cross between touch typing and whatever you call it when you have to look at the keyboard to type even though I type really fast. The problem, when I work on my netbook is that I end up putting my palm on the track pad accidentally, which moves the cursor about the time I am not looking at the screen and I end up with an entire paragraph in the wrong place.

Synaptics has announced new tech at Computex that will hopefully stop this issue forever. The new trackpad technology supports gestures with up to four fingers, but the best part is that the new SmartSense tech can tell the difference between the palm of your hand and your fingers.

While the multi-finger gesture capability is really cool, the ability to detect accidental is a godsend to those of us who type our work for a living.

Do you know what a chroot is? No? Then let’s file this under Cool Shit We Don’t Understand, because I have no freaking idea either: A bunch of cool nerds at Pre Dev Wiki (motto: “Let’s open this beast up”) have managed to coerce the newly released iPhone rival Palm Pre to run the popular NES emulator FCEUltra. They then decide to taunt us lesser mortals by posting instructions for the hack, knowing full well that we can’t read their language. Programming language that is.

Mounting Debian on the Pre is one thing, but typing a command in the damn chroot before and after playing a game? Good god. And just to rub rock salt onto our fresh, fresh wounds, they made a demo video too. *sniff* ‘Snot fair.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

On second thought, I actually don’t care because I can easily have NES, SNES, GBA and PSX emulators on my PSP all at the same time. Ha! Take that chroot.

Rumors about Palm’s latest mobile, the Centro have been floating around for a while, but the guys over at Gizmodo just got their grubby little hands on what appears to be the first real image of what the device will look like.

Word is that the Centro is targeted at the lower end of the market, with a likely retail price around $99 (after service commitment with Palm’s initial partner, Sprint). From the looks of this picture, it’ll be the smallest Treo device yet to offer a full keyboard.

The specs for the mobile device are still unconfirmed, but most reports say that it’s a full 3G device, with EVDO and HSDPA support. In addition to the full tactile keyboard, the color screen reportedly offers touch sensitivity as well. The Windows Mobile device also includes Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. While it’s no iPhone killer, the Centro is shaping up to be a pretty decent looking package for the price.

Palm today rolled out the details on a new device which extends the functionality of smartphones. Dubbed the Foleo, it’s a companion product for both Palm OS and Windows Mobile versions of Treo smartphones.

In a nutshell, Foleo adds a big screen and a full size keyboard to your mobile phone. It interfaces with your smartphone via a Wi-Fi connection and lets you share documents instantly and seamlessly between the two. Slated for release this summer, the Foleo is a simplified computer with companion versions of e-mail, web browser and document editors, designed to improve the usability and access to the documents on your Treo.

On the plus side, Foleo has a really nice 10-inch LCD screen, a svelte form factor, and weights in at just 2.5 pounds. Battery life is rated at 5 hours, and there’s no boot time for the system. Also, the Foleo runs on a Linux kernel, so Palm is promising easy development of 3rd-party applications for the device.

On the other hand, with a retail price of $599 ($499 after an introductory rebate,) I’m not sure there’s enough of an advantage of the Foleo over a low-priced laptop computer running already existing mobile device synchronization software.

They come in four colors: graphite, crimson, arctic and copper (does anybody else out there think this is a Cingular exclusive?) and feature a smaller form factor than earlier models. The antenna has also been integrated into the case so it doesn’t stick out anymore.

The phones run Palm OS version 5.4.9 and feature 64MB of RAM, a square 320×320 pixel color screen and a 312MHz Intel processor. In addition to quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone connectivity, the Treo 680 have built-in bluetooth connectivity and an improved phone interface. Keep in mind that Palm is poistioning this as an entry-level device, so it doesn’t include wi-fi connectivity. Also on board is a VGA (why?) resolution digital camera and the ability to stream live audio.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but figure that phone carrier subsidies will keep the price low as is usually the case.
