So you have a kick ass home theater setup, with a 72″ 3D HDTV as its centerpiece. I applaud your fat wallet. But if you want to keep being a great consumer, keep an eye on this new technology: a 145-inch Ultra High Definition plasma display. Either that or this is a picture of a 32″ HDTV and a very small lady.

Made by NHK and Panasonic, the display has a maximum resolution of 7,860 x 4,320, has almost 34 million pixels and other numbers bigger than the ones that your TV has. It also has “a new drive system to stabilize the picture throughout the panel, by scanning several pixels simultaneously in the vertical direction.”

I predict that in a hundred years, Sony will partner with ImprovEverywhere to bring us Liv3Theatr, an Ultra Hyper Mega 26-Hit Combo Finish High Definition Display that looks so real because it is real. Pick a channel and Sony will teleport improv actors behind your display to perform whatever show is on that channel or teleport you to where the show is being held. If you can find the remote.

There are quite a few compact digital cameras on the market right now, and since manufacturers keep releasing new ones, it’s not always easy to decide which you should get. If you’re looking for a compact camera, but want a long-range optical zoom, the new Panasonic Lumix ZS20 is supposed to be the slimmest point-and-shoot with a 20× zoom lens.

The camera measures 1.1 inches in width, so it’s pretty thin for a camera with that much real zoom range. Its new CMOS sensor has been optimized for low-light conditions. The camera’s Leica lens allows to reach from 24mm to the 480mm range. The 14MP sensor has noise reduction features and a new autofocus system. It can shoot 1080p AVCHD video at 60 fps, and 1080p MP4 recording at 30 fps. It also offers GPS for geo-tagging of photos.

The camera has both touchscreen controls and actual buttons, which is refreshing, since more and more cameras seem to be going strictly with touchscreens these days.

The Lumix ZS20 will be released in March 2012, and will list for $350 (USD).

After the Panasonic Lumix GX1 was spotted in Taiwan last week, Panasonic finally unveiled the full Monty about this camera. This micro four-thirds camera is the successor to the GF1, which was raved about by professional and amateur photographers. It basically takes kick-ass photos, in a very small and compact package, meaning that you can take great pics without having to lug around a heavy DSLR.

The 16MP Live MOS sensor is improved from the predecessor, with the ISO going up to 12800 to capture low light scenes. It now has a 0.09 second auto-focus, making it quite fast. Burst shooting is 20fps for 4MP and 4.2fps for 16MP. It captures video in 1920 × 1080 AVCHD Full HD with high-quality sound. The Intelligent Auto + mode lets you sit back and push a button to take great photos and videos. The Auto Bracket feature takes up to 7 photos at different exposure levels in order to create HDR composites. There are also a variety of integrated filters to create different looks for your photos directly on the camera.

The camera can also capture 3D images, but you’ll need the LUMIX G 12.5mm / F12 dual lens in order to do so. The Lumix GX1 comes in silver or black and will retail for $700 (USD). It’s available for pre-order now over at Amazon.

Panasonic just announced the new Lumix DMC-3D1, a dual-lens camera which can take high-resolution 3D images or simultaneously record stills and video footage.

The 3D1 has a 12MP sensor, and can record 3D images up to 8MP. It can also record 2D or 3D HD video at 1920×1080 resolution. The camera has got two ultra wide-angle lenses which capture images independently. This means that a scene can be captured with different zoom levels at the same time. All of the features are controlled via the 3.5-inch touchscreen.

There’s built-in noise reduction, and burst shooting up to 8fps. It comes with the usual features you’d expect from a higher end point-and-shoot camera, including an intelligent hand-held night shooting mode, which layers multiple exposures of a scene, as well as an improved noise reduction system for low-light shots. Sounds like you’ll be able to capture HDR photos as well.

The Lumix DMC-3D1 should be released by the end of the year and sells for $500 (USD).

Last month we told you about Evolta’s latest quest and how he was training for the event. We have news that everyone’s favorite little robot from Panasonic has now completed the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii.

The bot actually finished on October 30th. Three EVOLTA Robots powered by three EVOLTA AA rechargeable batteries had a goal of finishing within 168 hours. So did they beat their goal? This is EVOLTA we’re talking about. Of course the little guy(s) kicked butt.

The Swim Robot finished the 3.8km swim in 5hours and 36 minutes, while the Bike Robot finished biking 180.2km in 97 hours and 42 minutes. The running robot finished the 42.2km run in 63 hours and 38 minutes. That’s a total of 166 hours and 56 minutes, so it they did it with some time to spare. Both the bots and the batteries performed exceptionally.

Panasonic’s new Shampoo robot, recently shown off at CEATEC 2011, has hairdressing salons scared. Okay, not really. They don’t have anything to fear from this thing just yet. Although it looks like it might feel like a good massage (until it peels your scalp clean off when it becomes self-aware), it is as slow as Jessica Simpson in a physics class.

This thing is basically a car wash for human craniums. It soaps you, scrubs you, rinses you off and repeats. It may not be perfect, but shampooers everywhere have been put on notice. You might want to turn down your volume for this video clip since the sound is all wonky, but you don’t really need to hear it to see what’s going on:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It won’t be long before this robot is washing hair in hospitals, salons etc. Once they tweak it some more, I can even see it dying grandma’s hair blue and giving people rough haircuts in under 5 minutes. Maybe it could even cut some pre-loaded designs into people’s hair and tattoo skulls. Personally, I don’t care what it can do, I won’t be trusting my fragile skull to this thing.

Panasonic has announced a new communication assistance robot called HOSPI-Rimo. Don’t worry, he quite literally isn’t armed. That means that it should be harder for this guy to kill you either – intentionally or by accident.
As a matter of fact, HOSPI-Rimo is all about helping humans that require assistance and thereby making their lives easier. The HOSPI-Rimo specifically helps those humans who are bedridden or just can’t move about.

Having HOSPI-Rimo around means that they will be able to talk to the doctor even when he is in a different area of the hospital as if he were in the room talking to you face to face. That goes for family as well. The HOSPI-Rimo also has their medication needs covered since it will deliver medication. It won’t be long before this bot is put into service across Japan. I think doctors will get sick of this one really quick since it allows patients to bother them at their leisure about any little thing.

By now most of us into robots have heard of Panasonic’s EVOLTA robot. They have a new challenge for the little robot every year. This year Panasonic has EVOLTA World Challenge IV.

So what will it be this time? Bicycling across the country? Climbing a tall mountain? It will be a 230km triathlon that includes swimming, biking and running. I can hear the Rocky music now as EVOLTA trains. It is the job of robot creator Tomotaka Takahashi to design three suits for the robot for each of the challenges.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Sure, this is all to get you to buy Panasonic’s EVOLTA rechargeable batteries, but who cares? I’m still rooting for the little guy. He’s got heart. In 2008, EVOLTA, powered by two AA EVOLTA batteries, lasted 6 hours and 46 minutes when it conquered 530.4m of the Grand Canyon. I couldn’t do that with or without batteries.

For this latest challenge three robots will be used, one for each job. We here at technabob are cheering for the little guys.

What is it about rugged laptops that makes them so interesting? Is it the fact that you can take them on camping trips and not worry too much about scratching them? Or is it the fact that you can pretend to be on some sort of secret mission while you’re using one? Well, you won’t look too conspicuous with the latest Panasonic Toughbook C1, which will get a major upgrade in July.

The lightweight Toughbook C1 weighs about 3.28 lbs, and can easily switch between tablet and laptop modes. This convertible laptop can withstand drops from up to 30″ and the keyboard is spill-resistant. It will include a 12.1″ (1280×800) screen, available with a special touch screen that toggles between multitouch capacitive and precise stylus modes.

There’s 2 GB of RAM, upgradeable to 8 GB and a 320 GB hard drive. It comes with an Intel Core i5-2520M processor with Turbo Boost that’s supposed to be 30% faster than its predecessor. Panasonic claims you’ll be able to use it about a dozen hours in the field on a single charge.

You get all of the usual ports and connectivity features. It will also work on the 3G networks of AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. The new Toughbook C1 will be released later in July and will sell for $2,599 (USD).

There’s something inherently cool about rugged point-and-shoot cameras. You can toss them around, drop them in water, and they’ll still end up taking great photos. For most people, it’s become apparent that their smartphones are replacing their point-and-shoots. However, your iPhone isn’t particularly rugged.

The Panasonic DMC-FT3 is a 12.1 MP camera is waterproof up to 40 feet, which is kind of impressive. It’s got a shock-proof exterior (up to 6.6 ft) and can withstand temperatures as cold as 50˚F. It’s also dust-proof and the body is airtight. It’s also got a built-in compass, altimeter, barometer and GPS. It’s available in a variety of colors, including bright orange and electric blue. It can also record full HD video.

What’s impressive is its diminutive size. It’s barely larger than a business card. Unlike other models, it also has a 3D mode, which is surprising. Ultimately, it could be pretty popular, but the micro four third and DSLR market segment seem to be the ones that are the most desirable right now since their quality is much better than what you can get with smartphones.

People that live where it snows a lot take it for granted. The highlight of the year in Texas is the random cold winter when we get some snow and can build snowmen in the yard. If you live in a place like Bahrain – where it never snows thanks to the desert heat – you might never get the chance to see or touch snow.

Panasonic held a contest on where it looked for ideas that spawned a mission to let some kids in Bahrain see snow for the first time. Panasonic used some of its cool high-tech vacuum insulation, packed a snowman away inside a box, and put it on a plane to start its 5,314-mile journey to the desert and the waiting kids.

I am surprised to say that the fancy insulation material actually kept the snowman frozen for the whole trip, and when it arrived in Bahrain, the kids got to touch snow and see their first snowman. As Frosty started to melt, the kids got to have snowball fights and build their own mini snowmen too. This may be the best use ever for boring insulating materials ever.

If you have one of those cool Panasonic Lumix G2 micro four-thirds digital cameras with interchangeable lenses, a new firmware has landed. The upgrade adds a really cool new feature to the camera if you buy the sweet Panasonic H-FT012 3D lens that surfaced a few months back.

That cool lens is very thin and has dual optics inside that allow compatible cameras to shoot 3D images. The firmware update for the G2 allows the camera to work with the lens for taking images in 3D and playing them back.

You do need a 3D compatible TV to be able to shoot the 3D images out in a viewable format. The new firmware you need to grab is version 1.1 and it can be downloaded right now. That 3D lens is a bit over $200, which is surprisingly cheap considering how much lenses can cost.

But that didn’t stop Panasonic [JP] from making a hair washing robot, that hopefully won’t rip your head off.

The design is based on the robot hands that seem to be lying all over the place over at Panasonic’s Japanese headquarters. This robot will wash your head and massage it. It can even dry your hair and give neck massages.
Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The system uses 3D scanning to track the shape of a customer’s head, so that there are no mishaps. Once again, I’d rather have a human do this, but if humans are in short supply, I guess that this ‘bot will do.

To celebrate the 17th anniversary of the 3DO, Panasonic is getting back into the video game business. Just kidding about the 3DO part, but who knows. What’s true is that the company is working on Panasonic Cloud Entertainment, a platform with an emphasis on online gaming and cloud-based media. The first device for this platform is called the Jungle, a portable system that’s loaded with controls.

As CrunchGear has pointed out, the Jungle is equipped with at least a keyboard and a touchpad. I’m not sure if both of the circular shapes on either side of the touchpad are directional pads, but at least the one on the left is indeed a d-pad, as shown in Gizmodo’s exclusive image. We can see shoulder buttons in there as well.

There’s no mention if the screen is a touchscreen, but apparently it displays HD, and when it was tested by a few people at PAX they were very impressed with its quality. Look at the first picture and you’ll see that the Jungle does have a mini-HDMI port, so I guess that’s a yes on the HD screen. Here’s the very ugly and vague teaser for the Jungle:

Currently, only one game has been officially announced for the handheld – Battlestar Galactica Online.

I hate teasers like that, because they barely give any indication of the game’s quality. So all we know is that players will be have the option to play as a Cylon. Those two videos – as well as a third that introduces a weekly show by Machinima – can be found on the handheld’s official website, and there’s literally nothing else on there at the moment.

I am quite curious though about the possibility of playing MMOs on a handheld. Will we see separate versions of popular MMOs? Perhaps there’ll be a complementary version with limited functionality, similar to WoW’s Mobile Armory for iOS devices? Or, since we’re just speculating, could full versions of MMOs make it to the Jungle? What do you guys think?

If you are familiar with digital cameras at all, you will probably recognize the Lumix brand as Panasonic’s line of popular digital cameras that are sold all around the world. Panasonic is set to offer up its first Lumix branded mobile phone, which means the device will be focused on taking very nice pictures in addition to making calls.

For now, what we know is that the phone will have a touchscreen, integrated flash, a 13MP image sensor and more. The touchscreen will be used to view photos, and as is the case with most touchscreen cams today it would be a safe bet that the screen will also provide touch to focus and other features.

The camera will have a microSD card slot for storage and will be DLNA capable. A wireless LAN access point will be optional and the camera will feature a special “Mobile VenusEngine” for quality photos – whatever that means.

Full details on the first Lumix phone should turn up on October 5 according to Panasonic. Guess we’ll just have to wait until next week for more details on it.

The new stadium that the Dallas Cowboys plays in here in Texas has a gigantic video screen hanging from the ceiling and the thing is awesomely huge. There are other massive video walls in use around the country in stadiums and other places where many people congregate to watch sports. Now, the Charlotte Motor Speedway is getting the world’s largest video wall thanks to Panasonic.

The massive video wall will sit between turns two and three and is designed to be viewed by spectators sitting in the turn four to turn one area of the track. It’s hard to fathom how massive the screen will be when finished. It will cover 16,000 square feet, which is larger than the grocery store up the street from me.

The behemoth will measure 200-feet wide by 80-feet tall and weigh 165,000 pounds. It will offer a 720p resolution image produced by 9 million LEDs. I don’t even want to think how much power the beast will draw. It will be used for all sorts of coverage of races and interactive content with construction starting next month and finishing in April 2011.

Digital Trends have reviewed Panasonic’s DMP-B15, The world’s first portable Blu-ray player. So is it worth the $800 USD price tag? Well, the player does get a 7 (out of 10 I guess), but after reading the review my short answer has to be NO.

I’m not saying that Digital Trends’ review was biased or anything. From a technical standpoint, the DMP-B15 deserves a 7 because it’s so versatile. You can connect it via HDMI cable to an HDTV and use it as a conventional Blu-ray player. It also has VIERA CAST functionality, Panasonic’s web video service that allows access to sites like YouTube and Amazon’s Video-on-Demand, as well as for downloading firmware updates or BD-Live content. The DMP-B15 also has an SD card slot and an AV input, so it’s still useful even if you don’t have a Blu-ray disc on hand.

Unfortunately, nearly all of those functions are hampered in one way or another. First of all, the 8.9-inch, 1024 x 600 screen kind of defeats the purpose of Blu-ray media because it can’t really handle HD content. Second, the DMP-B15 can only go online via… Ethernet *groan*. No Wi-Fi. Third – and I’m not sure about this but still – Digital Trends only mentioned support for MPEG-2 and AVHCD playback from SD cards. Fourth, the battery’s only good for 3 hours.

So what would make you spend $800 dollars for this jack-of-all-trades? I guess the only reason is just so you can say that you have the world’s first portable Blu-ray player. Actually I don’t even believe that claim, because we already have portable Blu-ray players: Blu-ray capable laptops. And wouldn’t you know it, at least one of those laptops sells for just $700 USD! Yes, something that’s way way way more versatile, has WiFi, and can play all kinds of shit costs $100 less than the DMP-B15.

But hey, it’s your money. You can get the DMP-B15 at Amazon. Or not.

Panasonic demoed their own robot floor cleaner at the Tokyo Fiber Senseware exhibition in Milan. It’s called the “fukitorimushi” (wipe-up bug), although if you ask me “Creepy Pillow” would be a better name for it. The high-tech pillow cleaner detects dust and dirt using “blue-white light” and then cleans ‘em up using a cutting-edge nanocloth developed by Teijin Ltd.

According to Chris Davies of Slash Gear, the nanocloth is made of “thousands of polyester filament fibers each 7,500x thinner than a human hair.” When it spots dirt, fukitorimushi’s “eyes” will flash red, and the robot will furiously crawl all over the place until its target is eliminated.

Like the more colorful and less creepy Roomba, Fukitorimushi can also dock itself into its charging station when it needs to recharge, but it still needs some TLC from its owners because the nanocloth will have to be replaced once in a while. Which is why Panasonic says that the owners of a fukitorimushi will gain more than a cleaner but also a pet. The Roomba, on the other hand, becomes a source of amusement if its owners already have a pet.

We’ve all heard of electric blankets, right? Japanese electronics giant Panasonic decided to take the basic concept and embed it into a carpet. That way, when you step on the rug, your feet stay nice and toasty. As a resident of a chilly Northern climate, living with hardwood floors, this really does seem like a bright idea.

Panasonic’s new heated rugs have a special radiant mat that sits beneath the surface of the carpet to keep things nice and warm. Your bare feet should have nothing to complain about with these rugs cranking out temperatures all the way up to about 114°F/46°C. But if that’s too hot for you, no worries – they are adjustable. In addition to a variety of fabric styles, they plan on offering wooden surfaces as well.

And you don’t need to worry about Rover taking a whiz on one of these and electrocuting himself. The heating elements are waterproof, and the rugs are designed for stain and germ resistance.
