While there are a plethora of different options if you want to customize your iPhone, I have to say that these wooden backs are definitely stylish, since they’re not just veneered stickers. Stickers are cool, but this bit of customization with the wood makes your iPhone different from most of the others around you – except for those who bought one of the other wooden iPhone backs on the market.

What sets the Material 6 Wood iPhone Backs apart is that they’re available in a bunch of different finishes. Each package comes complete with a the special screwdriver that will allow you to remove the glass back of your iPhone and replace it with this wooden one.

Material 6 sells these from $90 to $100 (USD), so there on the expensive side of things, but they do look quite good. The backs are available for the iPhone 4 and 4S. Custom engravings are available for an extra $5.

There’s definitely something cool about juxtaposing your high-tech glass and metal iPhone with some good old-fashioned wood. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this idea executed, but this wood back has a clean elegance to it, and really accentuates the natural grain of the wood.

These Solid Wood iPhone Back Panels by Monolith will be available in oak, teak, or walnut for the iPhone 4 or 4S. They will definitely make a nice pairing for your phone, and come in equally stylish packaging. The product page is quite sparse, so it’s not clear if it completely replaces the back panel, or if it’s just a veneer that sticks on. Given its $55 price tag, I’m guessing it’s a full replacement panel.

Each panel measures about 31.5″ square, and has an 8×8 grid of “smart” RGB LEDs. PixelInvaders LED panels use software called PixelController to drive them. You can even control them using a MIDI device or using OSC compatible software. The hardware is open-sourced, and is targeted at geeks, artists, and DIY enthusiasts. The panels themselves are able to playback real-time generated video or simple color changes. The PixelController software was released as open-source software on GitHub.

To support the project and get your own PixelInvaders LED panels, you can visit the IndieGoGo PixelInvaders page. Minimum contribution is $25, but to get anything back, you’ll need to give at least $282, and that only includes the LED modules. You’ll need to spend as much as $626 for all the parts needed to assemble a full panel, or $1499 for a fully assembled and tested one.

Looking for a dramatic, colorful addition to your room? If your taste skews towards Saturday Night Fever, have I got a thing for you.

These flat LED panels can be mounted on your wall or ceiling (although dancing on these isn’t recommended) and can change colors with the push of a button. Using the panels, you can set the color of your room to suit any mood. Especially if that mood is You should be dancin’, yeah!

Each colorful panel has an array of bright multi-color LEDs that can be switched between 16 different colors using the included wireless remote. The panels crank out 180 lumens of illumination, and in addition to solid colors, can be set to flash, strobe, or cross-fade between colors. Of course, to really achieve any real effect with these, you’ll need to buy a bunch – and in the case of the illustration below, you also need really bad taste.

In addition to wall and ceiling mounting, the panels can be used on the top of a table or on a bar as long as you place glass or plexiglas over the tops to protect them. If I had a bar, I’d totally cover the surface with these – then freeze the whole thing in ice.

These color-changing LED panels are available over at Chinavasion for $52.39 (USD) each.

The Nintendo DS Lite boasts pretty decent battery life when fully charged… but why charge it at all? Slap a few solar panels on that bad boy and stop worrying where you left your charger. Not sure how to accomplish such a feat? Well, thank goodness for all the people who write up how-tos just for the fun of it!

Solar-powered DS creator dark sponge has just put up a step-by-step guide to making the Nintendo handheld a little more green at Instructables. If you can manage a little soldering and wire-connecting, you too can have your own solar-powered DS, and if not, you can at least look at the instructions and pretend that, some day, you might learn how to do “all that crafty and mechanical stuff.”

The best part about the project is how good the end result looks. As dark sponge points out, the design of the DS makes it perfect for adding solar panels. Of course, when the DSi comes along, we’ll have to work around the built-in camera.

QSI Corporation has revealed a new technology that lets any semi-rigid material sense touch. Any combination of materials such as glass, plastic, metal, stone or wood can become the touch input surface.

Their force-based InfiniTouch technology can not only read X and Y coordinates, but even the Z-axis force, so they can sense the intensity of the touch.

Designed for use in environments where traditional touch panels won’t survive the elements, initial applications will be in places like tollbooths, outdoor kiosks, ATMs, building lobbies and gas stations. The technology also provides designers and architects with tremendous creative freedom, such as in the photo above, which shows a touch panel made from slate, with water running across the surface.
