This amazing-looking Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Terminator helmet was created by Shawn Thorsson, and it’s hard to believe, but it started off as a papercraft model. I knew that you could do many things with paper, but this has to be one of the most ingenious ways of creating amazing props.

Shawn started with a 3D model of the helmet loaded into a papercraft modeling program called Pepakura Designer, which output pieces of paper to cut and glue into a model. Once the model was created out of paper, Shawn covered it inside and out with layers of fiberglass resin. Then he sanded, polished, and painted it in multiple coats to give it that distressed, war-worn look. The result is pretty awesome, and it definitely looks like one a Space Marine Terminator would have no problem wearing.

Shawn created this as a display piece and in total, spent about $45 on materials, which is pretty cheap compared to what he ended up with. Of course, many more hours of his time and talent went into it as well.

If you’d like to see how he went from 3D data to paper model to completed helmet prop, head on over to Shawn’s blog for the complete build log.

It comes from papercraft artist Leo Firebrand and is a pretty damned accurate reproduction of the game’s small, but deadly Snub Pistol – especially given the fact that it’s made out of paper. It even has integrated LEDs which cast an appropriate blue glow.

Leo waited a while since his last project before making this one because he wanted to perfect his skills and do the gun justice. This project required many more layers than any build he has done previously, so it took a lot of planning as well. The finished product certainly shows that attention to detail and looks amazing. It sure looks like mission accomplished to me.

If you had to think of two toys that really stand out from the past and have left their mark on the world, these two would be the ones. The Viewmaster and the Etch-a-Sketch are true classics. Everyone knows them the instant they see them.

These papercraft toys are just like the real things, only if you aren’t careful, you will get tons of paper cuts. Also, they don’t actually work. Both of these little toys are anthropomorphic of course, making them extra cute.

They were created by Marshall Alexander, a “paper engineer” in the Netherlands, in tribute to his favorite childhood toys. I would say that he did an excellent job.

If you want to download these and make them yourself, just go here. Then once they are assembled, display them proudly.

In this case, one artist posed Darth Vader like he’s Jesus Christ himself – a bit of a contradiction with Vader’s Dark Sided ways. In place of the sacred heart is the Death Star, of course.

The piece was created by Spanish designer Lobulo, who has a reputation for his intricate papercraft creations. He works for a few different agencies in Barcelona, and he recently created this awesome papercraft Darth Vader for Argentina’s Göoo Magazine. This astounding piece of Star Wars fan art uses lots of cut bits and strips of paper, carefully layered together, as you can see in the video below:

Papercraft fans who love Fallout or Voltron can make some cool new toys for their desk. They each have the signature cube heads of papercraft toys and look amazing.

They were designed by Randy Padama (aka randyfivesix) and are ready for you to download and assemble. Display them on your desk, or play with them like action figures and make them fight. This gives you the opportunity to act out the crossover event that never was, but should have been. The Voltron and Fallout crossover that would have either been amazing or totally sucked.

The Fallout guy is especially neat since he has a removable paper helmet. If you have the spare time and want to make something cool, you can download them here. There’s also a TRON guy, but he’s actually the least interesting of the bunch, but maybe that’s just my taste.

If you’re a fan of classic Apple computers, here’s a fun afternoon project for you. What we’ve got here are tiny papercraft models of the original Apple I and Apple II computers.

Actually, the original Apple I didn’t even come with a case, but the papercraft design is based roughly on some of the handmade wooden cases which resellers made for the granddaddy of personal computers. I like how the Apple II includes the old 5-1/4″ floppy drive and one of those crappy old 9-inch black and white CRT monitors that I had almost entirely blocked out of my memory.

Sure, the details aren’t precise on these models, but they’re good enough to embody the spirit of these classic computing dinosaurs. If you’d like to make these for yourself, you can grab the hi-res PDF templates over at Paper Replika.

I always loved the flying vehicles in Blade Runner. I think it’s the fact that they could drive on the ground like regular cars, but then do the VTOL think and take off and land on a dime. Probably the most iconic vehicle in the film is the police spinner, and while you still can’t have a real flying car, you can have one made out of paper.

Papercraft master Daumier Smith of Longtail’s Cafe previously built some awesome paper models of the V8 Interceptor from Mad Max, so it was only natural that he’d do another movie car as his next model.

The police spinner model is incredibly detailed, and even has a full cockpit and seating, as well as clear windows and roof, which are cut out of sheets of acetate.

The best thing about this thing is that you can make one for yourself. Sure, it’ll take some precision work with an X-Acto knife to cut out all the tiny components and then carefully glue them together, but when it’s done, it’ll look great.

You can grab a full set of PDFs of the spinner car paper model, along with construction diagrams, over at Longtail’s Cafe.

I’ve always been amazed by the mind-bending illusions of artist M.C. Escher. His perplexing worlds definitely had more than a little bit to do with the thematic concepts and set designs in the equally awesome Inception. So when I saw this Escher scene brought to life in three dimensions, I had to at least give it a mention.

Paper artist Bryan Peele (a.k.a. Crackpot Papercraft) managed to build a recreation of Escher’s classic Relativity illustration. You know, the one with a series of impossible staircases? I’ve been staring at this thing for a while now, and Crackpot definitely did a great job recreating Escher’s twisted space. All that’s missing are a few paper people walking upstairs, downstairs and sidestairs(?) to complete the effect.

Even more amazing is the fact that this befuddling scene was cut entirely out of a single sheet of 8-1/2″ x 11″ cardstock, without any glue or other adhesives.

If you’re feeling so inspired, Crackpot has even provided a template for you to print out and make your own. I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m going to say you need some pretty mad X-Acto knife and paper-folding skills if you plan on trying this yourself.

Be sure to check out Crackpot Papercraft’s flickr photostream for a bunch of his other cool geometric papercraft creations.

Taras put together this time-lapse video of the build showing how it was assembled from 750 sheets of paper, and weighs in at about 10 pounds total. Not bad for a 7 foot-tall robot with a jet pack, eh?

Those papercraft superheroes are pretty awesome, Hellboy especially.

Why is it that every wedding I get invited to seems to involve long, drawn-out, hyper-religious ceremonies and readings of old poetry? Somehow I manage to miss out on all the awesome geek weddings, like this Super Mario Bros.-themed one. While we don’t have any pictures of the actual wedding, these handmade invitations should give you a pretty good idea of what guests were in store for.

These awesome invitations were created by Larry T Quach for his friends Esther and Ryan’s wedding. The invitation itself looks just like an old NES cartridge, and even has an actual circuit board incorporated along the bottom edge. I wonder if you plugged that into an NES if it actually would play. You need to blow on it first, though.

In addition to the Super Mario invitations, Larry created some fun Question Mark Block favors for guests to take home after the reception. Inside was a little keepsake of the day, as well as three gold (chocolate) coins in each box (nice touch). I wonder if anyone got lucky and had some 1-up mushrooms or Fire Flowers inside of theirs.

These blocks also contained small cards which guests had to use to ensure they got the right meal from the server, but they seem a little out of place to me, with their 16-bit veggie and cow sprites. Plus, I really wanted the one with the cow to say something about how you had died of dysentery.

I have always been fascinated by papercraft. Over time, we’ve seen papercraft art that not’s only good to look at, but also functional, too (think papercraft Leica, people.) Here’s another one for the books, only this time, it’s for your eyes only.

I say this 1969 Ford Mustang is biodegradable because it’s made entirely from paper. It was crafted and made into a reality by Jonathan Brand, who decided to work on the Mustang after restoring three vintage cars with his old man. Jonathan has printed out a 1:1 scale paper model of every component of the car, but actually has no plan to assemble the entire car.

With the help of 3D software, Jonathan flattened out all of the different parts of the car, printed them all out, and then folded and glued them together to come up with each specific component.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can view Jonathan’s work, aptly called One Piece At A Time, at the Hosfelt Gallery from September 20 to October 29. Bring your papercraft Leica to take photos of this cool set of paper wheels.

I’ve never been particularly adept at cutting precise forms with an X-Acto knife, and then if I do anything with glue, it ends up everywhere it’s not supposed to. So when I see work like this, I can really appreciate the amount of artistic talent and technique it takes to construct something as incredible as these papercraft retro gadgets.

Designers Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmerman of Zim and Zou created all of these precise, scale replicas of classic technology for their Back-to-Basics collection. While I don’t quite remember my Walkman being this colorful, all of the other details are spot-on.

I can’t believe they even put a tiny spool of tape inside the reels of that cassette. Now that’s what I call attention to detail. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes footage of Zim and Zou putting their knife (and glue) skills to the test:

It’s about 3.5″ tall, or about one-tenth of Yoda, if the Star Wars Wikia is to be believed.

The sculpture is made from recycled brown paper and “swirly metallic lime green paper” that have been laminated together. Catamation also gave the piece a coat of epoxy varnish for added durability and to protect the paper from fading.

Yoda kinda looks like a potted plant, doesn’t he? Anyway you can get this origami sculpture from Catamation’s Etsy shop for appx. $24 (USD). Be quick about it too, because there’s only one of this remaining; Catamation is having difficulty finding more of that special Yoda skin paper so there’s no telling if and when more will be made.

The people who make such awesome papercraft stuff never cease to amaze me. Remember the World’s Smallest Nintendo DS Lite from a few years ago? Or the papercraft Android mascot that was a popular desktop decoration last December?

Now these works of art might just be that–works of art. But Matthew Nicholson is taking it to the next level by coming up with a working papercraft Leica camera.

The man behind this cool creation has a tutorial in the works on building and working your own papercraft Leica. At first, I assumed that there probably was some digital camera of some sort hidden within the paper case but I quickly discovered that I was wrong.

The papercraft Leica is old school, meaning you’ve got to load some film into it before you can start snapping away.

Cool, huh?

I don’t know who made this or if this is it’s finished state – aside from being unpainted, the right shin seems to be damaged – all I know is that I can’t stop looking at it.

I hope whoever made this also makes a replica of the RX-0 Gundam Unicorn; I think it’s Unicorn mode will also look good when given the same treatment. Check out cadeson’s Twitpic page for the full-sized pictures.

There have been numerous attempts to create the Android mascot in papercraft form, but the ones I’ve seen have been grossly oversimplified. On the other hand, this one from deviantART contributor nasman1993 is actually a dead-ringer for the real deal – if the little green guy actually existed, and were made out of paper, that is.

You can grab a PDF template of this model for you to make your own here. Just know that if you have any thoughts that this will be an easy papercraft model to assemble, here’s a shot of just one small part of the model:

Good luck with all that. At least you can print it out as many times as you want if you screw it up.

If that papercraft Steve Jobs is a bit too complex for you, then you can try your hand at Star Wars-themed paper snowflakes, which will make some unique decorations for your home and Christmas tree.

You’ll have to follow these instructions to make your own. It sounds like a fun project to do over the holidays, when you’ve got some time to kill to make your Christmas tree look a bit more festive.

Naturally, I like the Darth Vader snowflake, although it looks more complicated to make than the clone trooper. I also like how he managed to sneak in The Galactic Empire logo in the middle.

Ah, Christmas is almost upon us and it’s time to bring out some crazy DIY papercraft Christmas decorations to set your tree apart from all of the rest. You can create this papercraft Steve Jobs Christmas tree ornament all by yourself and hang it on your Christmas tree to make it Apple approved!

Any Apple fanboy/fangirl would relish having The Jobs on his/her Christmas tree. That, or you can make it and place it on your desk. I like how large his head is. That seems pretty appropriate.

You can find a guide in German here at Benm.at and here’s a link to the PDF.
