Drew Dernavich noticed that some of the tools and techniques in Adobe Photoshop are borderline violent – warp, flatten, slice – so he wasn’t that surprised with what he saw when he got his hands on an advance copy of Photoshop 6. Especially considering the version he got:

Stone Cold Full Body Bicubic Resampling? If I were an image file I think I’d rather be deleted than find out what that that filter does.

The Unboxing Video to End All (Bad) Unboxing Videos

Ideally, unboxing videos are great ways of sharing the excitement of inspecting a new gadget, tool or toy, but some people tend to focus on the act of unboxing and on the little details instead of the object itself. Cool Gear Reviews has had enough of unboxing videos, so he decided to make a guide about how not to make an unboxing video.

I still think unboxing videos can be helpful and interesting to watch, but I get Cool Gear Review’s point. Some of the unboxing videos I’ve seen take far too long and only end up diluting the thrill of looking at a new device. No one can stop you from making your own unboxing video, but if you want people to watch what you make, just remember that you don’t have to include every single act and detail. You’re not conducting an autopsy.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The Characters That Didn’t Make The Cut

Despite its huge roster, damage that racks up to millions and the inclusion of Deadpool, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 still has standards. There are levels of absurdity that they would never descend, like including joke characters. Dorkly imagines a handful of characters that are too ridiculous, even for MvC3.

My favorite has to be Morph, although he’s still leagues better than Doug Ramsey. And to be fair to Dust Man, his vacuum ability is really powerful. But lame.

1982 TRON Holiday Special Unearthed

Well, actually, there was no 1982 TRON Christmas show, but the guys at Funny or Die perfectly captured the feel of those horrible early Eighties holiday specials in this hilarious parody clip.

From the EPCOT center-like fonts to the cheeseball announcer, to the appearances by B-list celebs like Vicki Lawrence, Jefferson Starship and Dom DeLuise, it’s priceless. You’ll have to sit through a 15 second commercial before you can watch it, but it’s well worth the time investment:

What’s your favorite part? I can’t decide if Dom DeLuise falling off the light cycle or Santa being annihilated by a light disc is mine.

Apple’s hyperbolic marketing strategy works most of the time, but I’m sure even Apple fanatics will admit that the Beatles’ iTunes release pre-announcement was too much. Remember that claim? “Today is just another day. That you’ll never forget.” And we didn’t, because it’s the day Apple made it clear that it’s okay to make a big deal out of everything. So let’s!

Video games have really come a long way, especially when it comes to marketing. For those too young to remember, CollegeHumor made a totally radical fake commercial for Grand Theft Auto on the NES.

As ridiculous as the fake GTA was, the commercial freaked me out. It’s unbelievably dumb, but kids, this really was how we rolled:

*shudder* I’m going to watch the Halo: Reach trailer a couple more times. I need to be reassured that the industry has matured.

We’ve yet to see a gadget really compete against the iPhone, to the extent that subscribers in the U.S. are willing to endure the sometimes horrible service of AT&T so that they can keep using Apple’s revolutionary product. If you were a designer or engineer and you were asked to make an iPhone-killer, what features would you include? Would you add a 48 megapixel camera? The ability to print pictures? What about cassette tape, VHS, and even floppy disk reading? What the hell am I talking about?

I’m talking about the xphone. And yes, that’s a VHS tape going inside it. Watch as this German-made spoof pokes fun at consumers’ demands for a do-it-all device and technology’s ever-increasing capacity to pack a ton of features into one gadget.

Microsoft’s weird-ass marketing campaign telling people to hold Windows 7 parties was asking for a parody, and the folks at Funny or Die are happy to oblige.

Here’s a party that millions of pirates will surely be having: a Windows 7 torrenting party! As if giving out tips on how to download illegal stuff wasn’t enough, there’s some (unnecessary) f-bombs at the end of the clip, so watch out mom & dad.

Seriously though, have you or anyone you know actually set up a Windows 7 party? Was the food any good?

Odds are, if you’ve heard of You Have to Burn the Rope, you’ve played it. You’ve talked about it. You may have posted some screencaps somewhere. But if you truly love the game, enough to carry it with you at all times, you can now put it on your Nintendo DS.

Not familiar with this little gem? Even if you don’t have a Nintendo DS, or don’t want to bother with the homebrew edition, you owe it to yourself to check out the Flash version. Just remember that titles are important.

It’s worth it, if only for the song at the closing credits (Portal fans: go forth and play, especially). You could find the song in YouTube, of course, but that would be cheating.

Now go burn the rope. If you’re having trouble, do try the DS version. It’s even got a map!

Smell of Books Aerosol E-Book Enhancer Violates “Olfactory Rights” of Writers

Vaporware manufacturer DuroSports Electronics wants to ease the transition from paper books to e-books with their Smell of Books scented sprays, specifically designed for e-book readers. Not. This is the kind of idea that’s so stupid it’s awesome, and for a while you’ll wish it was true. Then it’ll just be plain stupid. Right now though, the Smell of Books is a hoot:

I lol’d at Eau, You Have Cats. DuroSports went the extra mile and even concocted a scandal with the Author’s Guild, obviously a parody of the Kindle text-to-speech snafu. The Guild’s “statement” claimed that the Smell of Books was violating the “olfactory rights” of authors, so DuroSports had no choice but to pull out their aerosols for now.

Microblogging on Twitter is So Passé: Slate V’S Flutter Offers Nanoblogging

A long long time ago, way back in 2006, Twitter burst onto the blogging scene and introduced microblogging, forcing people to post messages that can’t be longer than 140 characters. But the people behind Twitter grossly overestimated our reading capacity, and now a new trend, nanoblogging, is going to cash in on that. Or so the joke goes in Slate V’s mockumentary, where they cover a new service called Flutter that has a maximum limit of only 26 characters.

A mode of communication that encourages people to place emphasis on highly readable form rather than worthwhile content, Twitter has flocks of fans and nearly as many enemies. Of course in the end it’s the people who continuously write – and read – pointless tweets that are to blame for the bad rep that the service has earned, but since we can always use a good laugh, go ahead and watch Slate V’s vid:
