The series is called Disassembly, and it’s quite compelling. Each image shows you just how many components went into these old pieces of technology. The flip clock and typewriter are impressively complex, as are the old cameras.

There are two types of photos that make up the series. One features the disassembled tech, all laid out neatly, which I prefer, and others are part of the Apart sub-series, which show the tech basically being blown apart.

Ok guys, you can all thank me for this later. I have found the perfect gift that shows your girl you love her, and lets you flex your geek muscle at the same time. Over on Etsy you can pick up this set of butterfly earrings.

Chicks like butterflies and jewelry after all, so this is doubly good for you. The cool part is that Italian crafter Aula46w built these earrings from resistors that are used inside electronic components. It took me a second to notice what they were made of.

They sell for $27 (USD) for the set, and if your girl isn’t into butterflies, Aula46 makes lots of other cool jewelry fabricated out of electronic components over on her Etsy shop.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane… back to, oh, say, 1998. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, but regardless, we all played laser tag with gusto. Now you can play it in your very own home!

Yeah, I know, I’m excited too! Apparently if you have a good deal of time on your hands you can get a $2 toy gun and a laser pointer, work your mojo, then strap a tupperware container filled with wires to your stomach. That’s it- now you’re all set for a battle royale.

This was created by some guy in New Zealand who put up a helpful webpage with an instruction set, parts list, and a bunch more pictures in case you’re interested in busting one of these out for yourself. Or, if you’re lazy like me, you could just forgo all the wiring mumbo-jumbo and run around a dark room with toy guns shouting “pew pew pew!” and leave it at that. Oh wait, that’s what I did last weekend.

Every day, I come across all sorts of cool homebrew robot projects, but never thought I had the skills or patience to make my own. Now, thanks to a generous member of the ‘bot building community, even the most novice builders can crank out their own little robots with ease.

The easy to follow 2 Hour Robot tutorial was put together by robot builder Frits Lyneborg (aka “fritsl”), the same guy who created the awesome yellow drummer ‘bot recently featured on Technabob.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

With about $85 worth of parts, and a couple of hours of your time, you can have a fully-functional wheeled robot to do your bidding. You’ll need to pick up a couple of motors, a servo, some wheels, a Picaxe controller kit, an IR sensor, and a handful of other parts to get started. The project also requires some basic tools (i.e. screwdrivers, wire cutters, soldering iron) and soldering ability before you begin.

While it’s not the world’s most sophisticated robot (it certainly won’t be playing the trumpet or tasting your wine any time soon), it’s a great opportunity to get your feet wet and to learn the basics of robot building and programming. To get started on your first robotic endeavor, check out Frits’ complete tutorial over on Let’s Make Robots.

The bipedal MiniMechadon walker is fully functional, and can hobble around just like the ones in the motion pictures. While it’s not quite as polished as the movie robots, it certainly captures the spirit of the wobbly two-legged critters. What’s really cool about the robot is how its walking movements aren’t pre-programmed. Rather, it gradually figures out how to walk based on its own.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The robot’s builder, Mike Smyth, built the bot a couple of years back as a one-off for his personal use. That’s too bad, because an army of these marching around my office would be pretty cool.

Think Microsoft’s white Xbox 360 case is a bit bland? While you could pick up one of Microsoft’s not so exciting faceplates for the 360, or stick on some sort of cheap-looking vinyl decal, why not go all out and replace the whole case with something a little less dull?

National Console Support is now offering replacement shells for the Xbox 360 in see-through, glossy black, and an oh-so-lovely chrome finish. Installation doesn’t look too painful, but unless you’re comfortable cracking open your 360, these cases probably aren’t for you. The replacement shells retail for $49 each.

Market intelligence firm iSuppli has completed their preliminary analysis of the costs to manufacture Sony’s Playstation 3 consoles. It looks like the two PS3 models (20/60GB) will lose between $241 and $306 each, not including the cost of accessories such as cables, controllers, packaging or shipping.

The estimated material and manufacturing cost for the $499 retail, 20GB PS3 console is $805.85 and the $599 retail, 60GB console is estimated to cost $840.35 to build.

It’s not uncommon for new consoles to be sold at a significant loss, with the aim to gain market penetration, sell high-margin games and accessories and to eventually lower production costs. Just a year ago, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was estimated to be losing up to $200 per console, and now is produced at an estimated $75 profit. That all said, with concerns about limited availability of parts and launch titles, it may be several years before Sony will be able to make a profit on the PS3.
