It’s been a while since I’ve spotted a cool casemod I thought was worth of a mention. Here’s one that I think you’ll like – assuming you enjoy movies about the mob. What you’re looking at here, my friends, is the Godfather of computers, literally.

While you might have thought it would be riddled with bullets, or maybe involve a horse head, it’s really just a massive, powerful PC in an ornate case. Inside, a 1940 Cadillac Fleetwood spins on a turntable as Don Corleone keeps his watchful eye on the mobo, power supply and cooling system, powered by MSI and Cooler Master components.

Under the hood (of the PC, not the car), there’s an MSI Z68A-ZD80 mobo, with a Intel Core i7-2600K Quad-Core CPU, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, a pair of MSI GeForce GTX 550 Ti Cyclone II OC graphic cards, two SATA3 120GB SSDs, 1TB and 2TB hard drives, powered by a Cooler Master Silent Pro M850 power supply, and cooled with V8 and Excalibur fans.

The guys over at Case Mod Blog spotted the Godfather PC casemod at the recent Campus Party event in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The case was made by Omar Majzoub – the same guy who brought us last year’s evil-filled Chucky casemod.

Maybe it’s just me, but I expected more blood.

I used to ride My Little Pony, until I took an arrow to the knee. Thankfully, I can still get some My Little Pony Action in a horrifying, flying little girl toy way. A geek going by the gibberish name zdzichorowerzysta, which I believe to be Russian for ZOMG… Ponies, has crafted what may be the cutest and strangest Skyrim mod yet.

Zdz… made the mod for the PC version of the game and all the scary dragons have now been replaced with a cute, yellow My Little Pony that flies around burning stuff. The mod is called the “Pony Dragon Mod” and can be downloaded right now.

My Little Pony aficionados will recognize the pony here as Fluttershy.

Having a moveable computer case won’t come in handy in daily use, but it would save you a lot of time and back pain when you do need to move or transport it. Which is why I envy Stephen Popa – not only does his PC case have wheels, it’s actually a remote controlled car, so he can have fun with it even when the PC is turned off.

Mounted on top of LanZilla is a custom case that houses, among other things, a Thermaltake Element Q mini ITX case, a Zotac H-67 ITX Wifi motherboard, a zotac 560TI graphics card, 8GB RAM and a 120 GB SSD. It also has a 9.6v rechargeable battery to power the car.

This mini PC is called The Aerodyne, and it’s supposed to evoke the look of classic streamline trains and skyscrapers like The Chrysler Building. For what it’s worth, the Aerodyne definitely looks more attractive than the typical plastic or metal computer cases we see these days.

The Art Deco influenced Aerodyne was created by Jeffrey Stephenson. The system is built around a Mini-ITX form factor PC, so its footprint is pretty small. The mini PC doesn’t have a fan to keep things compact, and is made out of mahogany and aluminum. Inside, it has an Intel Core i3 processor, an integrated Intel HD3000 graphics processor, a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD hard drive, and 8GB Crucial DDR 3 RAM. While those aren’t top-of-the-line specs, they’re still pretty solid for a compact machine like this.

Like what you see? Jeffrey is considering making a small run of 10 units of the Aerodyne, but he hasn’t announced pricing. If you’re interested, you can contact jeffrey[at]slipperyskip.com. In the mean time, check out the full Aerodyne build log over at bit-tech.

Everybody is playing Skyrim, but not the way that YouTube user KinectFAAST is playing. He has unveiled a new Skyrim hack that allows players to use Microsoft’s Kinect motion controller with the game. All you have to do is watch the video to see how great this hack is.

The gestures, being simple and intuitive, actually add some depth to the gameplay. Just swing your right arm forward, up, left, or right, and your character will hack with the sword. Want to cast a spell? Just raise your hand or push it forward.

Jut move your right foot a few inches forward to run, and a bit further forward to sprint. Your left foot forward gives you a slow walk. Leaning left, right, or back moves the character in that direction. The hack even offers voice control. This is one sweet hack for a game like Skyrim.

For more information on how the hack works, check out the description over on YouTube.

Most of today’s portable consumer computers are nothing but screen – tablets, smartphones, media players, etc. We also have monitors and HDTVs that have their own USB or HDMI ports. A Norweigan company called FXI Technologies is taking advantage of that and the projected rise of cloud computing by creating a pocket-size computer which has everything but a screen.

Codenamed Cotton Candy, the device weighs just 21g and can be powered via USB. It has an ARM Cortex 1.2GHz CPU – the same that’s in the Samsung Galaxy SII – a quad-core ARM Mali GPU capable of processing 1080p video, 1GB RAM, a USB port, an HDMI port and a microSD slot (it’s primary means of storage). It also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Cotton Candy can run a variety of operating systems, but in the demo video below it’s shown running Android 2.3 while plugged into a MacBook Air and on an HDTV:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So why would you want a device like this when you’ve already got a laptop, tablet or smartphone? FXI has several suggestions, including lengthening the life of monitors, PCs and other gadgets with screens. It’ll also make it easier to run multiple operating systems and drive the cost of owning a computer even cheaper – assuming you have a screen to plug it into of course. And again there’s the much hyped cloud computing.

If we do end up storing and streaming our media en masse on remote servers, it would make sense for people to carry something like the Cotton Candy to plug into dumb terminals to add local functionality. I don’t think it’s a good replacement for laptops, but I could see schools and businesses adopting a system of dumb terminals for students and employees to use and plug into. It makes for more personalized computing at lower costs.

Last year, a man named Barry Altman founded Commodore USA, LLC and acquired the rights to the Commodore computer brand. His company has since relaunched the brand along with the Commodore 64, the legendary all-in-one computer in a keyboard that inspired a generation of programmers, tinkerers and gamers. It’s latest version is the C64x Extreme, a computer with innards that are almost as modern as its case is archaic.

The C64x Extreme has a 2.2GHz Sandy Bridge Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 2TB HDD, a DVD R/W drive, a multi-card reader, 6 USB ports and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Where it does fall short however is in the graphics department – it’s left with integrated Intel HD Graphics instead of a discrete GPU. Quite disappointing, especially when we consider its price tag.

Commodore USA is selling the C64x Extreme at an Alienware-like $1499 (USD). So for all it’s updated specs, it’s still not a practical purchase. That said, Ben Heck’s unofficial C64 laptop didn’t have upgraded guts and yet had a starting bid of $1,000. I mean if I had the money, I’d rather go for this slightly less absurd deal.

The brand is pretty popular in Europe, and they’ll soon be launching some AirPlay-enabled sound systems in the US. Their products aren’t cheap, but they’ll fit into a modern pad, and they’ll probably please users who like minimalism.

There are two models, the Libratone Live and the Libratone Lounge. Thanks to Apple’s AirPlay, users can stream songs from their iTunes music libraries, on either a Mac or PC, to the stereo. This will also work on iOS devices via a Wi-Fi network. The Libratone Lounge is the larger version, while the Live is the smaller one that can be moved around.

I’d like to think that I’m not as cynical or heavily nostalgic when it comes to video games, but sometimes I do miss the simpler times of gaming. Back in those days I didn’t have to download a patch every week, and then after downloading that I have to download another patch for the game I’m about to play, even if it was released just a week ago (I’m looking at you, NBA 2K12!). But Redditor p4warrior also reminded me of another thing that’s getting out of hand with video games:

The table above is from Wikipedia, and it tracks all six retail editions of the soon to be released Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. There’s the Standard Edition, the Animus Edition, the Collector’s Edition, the Special Edition, the Signature Edition and the Ultimate Bundle. But no single bundle has all of the bonus items. For clarity’s sake I’ve revised this post and am only now showing the two most complete editions.

If you want to get all of the physical bonuses, you get the Ultimate Bundle. If you want the in-game bonuses you spring for the limited Animus Edition. If you want both right away? Buy both.

You can pre-order the Standard Edition of Assassin’s Creed at Amazon, the Collector’s Edition from Amazon UK, the Special Edition from Gamestation and the Signature Edition and Ultimate Bundle from Gamestop US. I also saw a PS3 version of the Animus Edition at eCrater for $500 (USD), an Xbox 360 version at the UK Ubi Shop going for £68 (approx. $109 (USD)) and a PC version at Gamestop UK going for £60 (approx. $60). Whew.

But if I were you guys I’d choose between the standard edition and the Ultimate Bundle. We have to put a stop to in-game pre-order exclusives.

People rely a lot on quick fixes to get themselves through the day. Broke the frame on your glasses? There’s Scotch tape for that. The sole on one of your shoes peeling off? There’s Super Glue for that. Lost/wrecked/broke the case for your PC? There’s a–well, there’s a box for that.

Instead of putting in a little more effort and work on a modded case for his PC (like the Train PC Case Mod, which I still haven’t gotten over even though it’s been more than month already), this dude just cut some holes out of a box he probably found lying somewhere, got some markers and drew some random doodles onto it, and voila.

By all means, it doesn’t look neat (as in orderly), but it does look neat (in a weird, disheveled, messy sort of way.) So for people who’re all for quick fixes and who just don’t have time to go buy a PC case or mod one, all you need to do is find a box, a roll of packaging tape, and some markers and you’ll be all set. Until it overheats and catches fire, that is.

I get that you might need a keyboard to get things done with your tablet. It’s even better when that same Bluetooth keyboard doubles as a case and a stand, but iLuv’s new WorkStation series is a bit much for my taste.

The iMM737 WorkStation and the iMM517 WorkStation Pro take your iPad to the next level providing an adjustable desktop docking station for your tablet. The 737 includes a wired keyboard, while the 517 Pro has a Bluetooth keyboard. Both also double as high-quality speaker docks, and will work with the iPad, iPhone and other devices with a 30-pin dock connector.

You can get the iMM 517 from iLuv any day now, and the iMM737 will be released in November. For now, you could always buy the nearly identical iMM727 or iMM 514 speaker docks, and just add your own Bluetooth keyboard.

If you do a lot of work on your tablet, you might want something like this. Or you might just want to buy yourself a proper desktop PC or laptop.

Fallout 3 has some of the most depressing scenery and environments I’ve ever seen in a video game, which is why I can appreciate the Badass Wasteland Restoration mod. Not only does it have a badass name – and a badass in the name – it also adds trees, bushes and grass to make post-nuclear holocaust America much easier on the eyes. The air is still probably toxic though.

The mod was made by virtual environmentalists Shiholude, Jeoshua, Whoden and Bumbum. Not sure if those are their real names, but I sure hope so. Especially Bumbum’s. Aside from replacing gray and brown rocks and posts with relaxing greenery, Bumbum and his pixel plant loving friends also added “five new tree models, new groundcover, distant land colors, distant tree visuals (and) plant overgrowth”.

The mod also “cleans up illogical tree placement.” I can’t remember seeing any illogically placed trees with my time in the game, but it’s nice to know that the mod takes care of them anyhow.

Here’s another mod that makes me wish I had a decent gaming PC. Admittedly I discovered this a bit late, but it’s just too silly not to share. YouTuber darthgir2 rounded up some of the Pokémon and dropped them into the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout. The results are equally hilarious and creepy.

I don’t even know what that thing is behind vault dweller Ash. The Pokémon are still encased in Pokéballs, which are placed in shrines scattered throughout the game world. When summoned, the monsters will follow you around as companions and absolutely demolish anyone that stands in your way. To add to the gruesomeness of it all, if you want to put a Pokémon back into its Pokéball you’ll have to kill it. That’s sad, but necessary. The NPCs will probably faint or puke or just go insane at the sight of these monsters.

That freakin’ Machoke is going to give me nightmares. You can download the mod for free at New Vegas Nexus; the instructions are there as well. There are 10 Pokémon in the mod – Arcanine, Beedrill, Charmeleon, Ditto, Hitmonchan, Kabutops, Kangaskhan, Machoke, Nidoking and Scyther. Unfortunately, it looks like your New Vegas <del>Pip Boy</del> Pokédex will remain incomplete, because darthgir2 has said that he’s not planning on updating the mod anytime soon. Don’t have New Vegas? The mod also has a Fallout 3 version.

I’ve been holding back on purchasing Deus Ex: Human Revolution because I still have other games I’ve yet to finish – Radiant Historia! – but if you’re one of the voracious types who’s already finished the game three times, check out this slick mod by Eidos forum member gibbed. Called the Burger Menu, the mod inserts a debug menu that’s accessible in game via the pause menu, giving you access to all sorts of tweak to make the game easier, harder or just make the experience of playing it fresher. Of course it’s for PC only, so folks like me who only have consoles, look on in envy.

Some of the tweaks that can be activated from the debug menu are invincibility, infinite ammo and infinite power. Aside from that, the menu also has a “shop” portion. I enclosed that in double quotes because you don’t actually have to pay to get stuff from the shop. In fact this shop can spawn money, along with weapons, augmentations and more.

But the benefits of the mod go beyond in-game power tweaks. It also removes the logos that appear when you fire up the game so you can start playing faster. The mod also inserts a mission selector from the game’s main menu, so you can immediately re-do levels with your new found powers or intentionally gimped abilities. Your choice. That’s what the game is supposed to be right? Wait don’t tell me! Shut up and check out the video below by YouTube channel HQGameZ to see more of the mod’s tweaks. It does have some minor spoilers though, so I didn’t watch all of it.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can download the Burger Menu mod for free; check out this thread at the Eidos forums for the link and details. Again, this is only for the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, for builds up to 1.1.622.0.

While Razer would like to call it the “World’s First True Gaming Laptop,” it certainly isn’t, but the new Razer Blade has got a host of impressive features which might attract hardcore gamers to this platform. It will also be something for users who are looking for high-performance laptops, and don’t want to lug around systems as heavy as traditional gaming PCs.

The Blade is certainly a worthwhile option to consider if you’re in the market for a gaming laptop. Alienware has kind of lost its edge, and the XPS laptops are fine, but this baby looks pretty sleek. Its case milled from aluminum, the Blade is less than an inch thick and weighs under 7 pounds. The most distinguishing feature is the set of 10 adaptive and programmable keypad buttons and the multi-touch LCD trackpad, which doubles as a small screen. The laptop itself has a 17.3-inch screen with 1080p resolution.

The Blade costs $2,800 (USD), so it’s about the same price as the MacBook Pro 17 all decked out (MBP17 come with the 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 for that price). This one comes with a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 2640M processor (dual-core), 8GB of RAM (1333MHz DDR3), two graphics cards (NVIDIa GeForce GT 555M with 2GB of GDDR VRAM and an integrated GPU), a 320GB 7200 RPM hard drive, and a webcam. Will it make me switch from my MacBook Pro 17? No, but the Razer Blade sure is a sleek package for gamers looking for a new laptop.

Yep. That’s Tetris running (or at least starting up) on a Gameboy emulator, inside Garry’s Mod. While Technicolour and Divran still have a lot of work ahead of them before they can do one better than these guys and actually play Pokémon in Garry’s Mod, they’re dreaming big: “Short term the intention is to merely get the emulator’s compatibility up, long term we hope to use a system of sending keypresses between players to allow people to watch each other play in Multiplayer…” and eventually “perhaps even (emulate a) link cable so you can trade your pokemons. Once we have these features in place we’ll be exploring Gameboy colour.”

When the hardware catches up I wouldn’t be surprised if someone managed to make Garry’s Mod run within Garry’s Mod. And then that will be the end of our universe. Or maybe we’re already running in an emulator. Those invaders were none the wiser.

Over the years, I’ve written about a wide variety of computer casemods based on vehicles ranging from cars, to motorcycles, to tanks, to spaceships. But this is the first mod I’ve seen with a computer built into a train.

These pics were snapped by Martin Blass over at BabeTech at this year’s Deutsche Case Mod Meisterschaft (DCMM) in Germany, and show a computer case that looks like it belongs on a model railway.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any details posted about the mod, other than the fact that it was made by Hungary’s Fresli János, and it’s called the “Nohab PC” – presumably named after this Diesel-Electric train. But that’s okay. The pictures say it all. It’s a computer inside of a train, and in my book, that’s way cooler than your average desktop PC.

Here’s another pic I found of the Nohab PC, where you can see that it even has little lights in the front of the train above the DVD tray.

And if you feel like sitting through an hour of yawn-inducing Hungarian, you can see a bit of Fresli’s mod work log here.

It seems like game makers are making some very questionable decisions with their games lately. First there was the whole Diablo III thing that left us scratching our heads, and now we have some disappointing news about Battlefield 3.

On the PC version, you have to actually leave the game to change servers. Say what? Yep, it’s true. This news is made stranger by the fact that DICE only just confirmed that console versions of the game will have a server browser available while playing.

They gave no explanation as to why they decided to do this, but I imagine it won’t sit well with PC gamers. When asked why, game designer Alan Kertz said, “It starts up REAL fast.” Thanks for the in depth answer, Alex.

So basically console players will be good to go, but PC gamers will have to stop playing and leave the game to switch servers. That’s not how you make people want to buy your game.

Like many PC gamers, Alexander aka SArd always wanted to have the best graphics cards so he could play the latest games. Back in 1998, SArd got his hands on his uncle’s PC, which had an Intel Celeron 266 CPU – the first ever Celeron processor – an S3 ViRGE DX graphics card and 2MB of RAM. As the years went by, SArd continued obtaining new and better hardware, but he kept his old graphics cards. Thus the Video Card Museum was born.

In 2010, a computer shop called PC Shop Group helped SArd set up a private exhibition for his collection of 35 graphics cards. I guess his exhibit was well received, as people kept asking about it and eventually donated some of their old cards to the museum. There are now about 200 graphics cards in the collection, which has since been moved to PC Shop Group’s store. As you’ll see in the pictures, the cards are labeled with information like its specs and a list of games that it can play at a respectable frame rate.

I’m sure the museum’s collection will only continue to grow – after all, a new video card is released every 5 seconds. Seriously though, SArd should try asking Nvidia and AMD for material; I bet both companies have a ton of items that they can offload. PC enthusiasts, honor your craft and its roots – and make your pilgrimage to the Video Card Museum at the PC Shop Group Pushkin outlet in Russia.

Two great franchises far, far away collide in Call of Duty: Galactic Warfare, a Star Wars-themed mod for Call of Duty 4 created by BlackMonkeys. The mod is a total conversion of CoD 4, and comes not just with new maps but with new player avatars, weapons and even a new killstreak.

In Galactic Warfare, players will fight either as a Rebel soldier or an Imperial Trooper. Yep, no game-breaking Force powers or lightsabers here. Along with the weapons and avatars, the current version (1.0b) contains seven maps – including ones set in Mos Eisley and Bespin – and viper droid, a new killstreak. The Y-Wing and Tie-Bomber have also been included in the airstrike killstreak.
