iPlate Adds a Layer of Photoshop to Your Dinner

…which is why these should have been called Photoplate instead. Whatever their name, Todd Burka’s designs will make Photoshop fans think of the possibilities of edible editing. What if you could enlarge or multiply your food with just a few clicks? Or make your kid’s dinner look awesome so they’ll eat it? Or undo your last meal so you won’t have that stomach ache?

Hell, if we can print 3D objects now, it wouldn’t be surprising if someday we’ll be able to print food and then edit it on our plates.

As of this writing, the iPlate is on pre-sale at Ulule, with a set of 4 china plates (one of each design) going for €20 (~$28 USD).

Real Life Angry Birds

Indian artist Mohamed Raoof decided to bring his own spin onto the Angry Birds phenomenon. Instead of cases, toys or video games, he came up with how these angry birds would look like in real life. One thing’s for sure, they look just as pissed off IRL as in the game.

I can imagine seeing these birds flying around in my backyard, only I’d keep my dog away from them, as it looks like they have a mean temperament and might try to fling themselves at us.

Thankfully/Sadly, these Angry Birds won’t starting trying to destroy homes filled with equally real looking green piggies anytime soon.

Star Wars Movie Poster Photoshop Contest Gets Strange but Funny Results

Freaking News ran a Star Wars movie poster Photoshop contest earlier this year. The results are in and some of these are pretty unusual. One of the most distinctive is a sort of mashup between Darth Vader and The Dark Knight. For some reason, it kind of works. Some of the other entries are a bit strange, but they are all kind of humorous.

There are a few which feature Chewbacca which are pretty goofy, but the Panda Wars and Empire of the Sun posters are also awesome. If you’re adept with Photoshop or have some funny ideas, Freaking News runs these sort of contests all of the time.

In keeping with their cat themed-names, the latest major update to Apple’s OS X is named Lion, which as we all know is the king of the jungle. So where do you go from there? You go here:

Sorry Nyan Cat, we love you but Maru is the undisputed cat king of YouTube, with videos that have more than 100 million total views. The box-loving Scottish Fold is a living meme. He’s been mentioned in Entertainment Weekly, the New York Times, has appeared in ads in Japan and has his own book and DVD, not to mention a Wikipedia entry. How many domestic cats boast such a résumé? How many domestic cats even have a résumé?

Real Life Pokémon: Don’t Wanna Catch Any of ‘Em

Characters from video games, comics and cartoons rarely look good in live action or when portrayed realistically, from Wolverine in his classic blue and yellow uniform to Mario in any of his numerous costumes. Animé characters are typically the most outlandish and should almost always remain animated. Which is why we shouldn’t be surprised at the results of artist Steven Lefcourt’s attempts to depict realistic Pokémon. We should be thoroughly creeped out though.

My goodness. That is a wild Pikachu. It’s still adorable though, if a bit big-headed. But it’s all downhill from here. Have a look at some of the other results of Lefcourt’s experiment:

I think more than the proportions or the dull skin, fur or texture, it’s the dead looks on their faces that are really unnerving. Check out Lefcourt’s Flickr set for more pics of these pocket monsters. He plans on adding more so keep checking back if you want. I’ve seen enough.

Cats of War is Much Better than Lolcatz

With word getting out that a bad-ass dog with bullet-proof armor that urinates laser beams (ok, I made that last part up) was used to help take out Bin Laden, cat lovers around the world have become jealous. Everyone knows behind every dead dog on the roads of our great nation is a cat hiding in the grass saying, “You can make it.”

Slate felt bad for cat lovers with the dogs getting all the glory and offered up its Cats of War series. The slideshow has cats placed strategically into photos that are real, courtesy of Photoshop. I really like the cat watching with Obama as Bin Laden is taken out.

No cats were harmed in the making if this series. Don’t worry about those cats jumping from the airplane with no parachutes. Everyone know cats always land on their feet and if things go bad, they have eight more tries to get it right if they don’t/

Drew Dernavich noticed that some of the tools and techniques in Adobe Photoshop are borderline violent – warp, flatten, slice – so he wasn’t that surprised with what he saw when he got his hands on an advance copy of Photoshop 6. Especially considering the version he got:

Stone Cold Full Body Bicubic Resampling? If I were an image file I think I’d rather be deleted than find out what that that filter does.

Photoshop for iPad Concept …And You Thought Adobe Hated Apple

Despite their much publicized argument regarding Flash, Adobe ~~can’t just ignore the market share of~~ still loves Apple, as shown by their recent presentation at Photoshop World 2011. Photography Bay uploaded a portion of Adobe’s demo of a conceptual iPad version of Photoshop that has support for layers.

It’s no CS5, but it’s a significant improvement over the bare bones Photoshop Express. Also that cameraman sure picked a nice spot to be in. No word on if or when Adobe is going to release the program.

Kratos in Every Game?

So what would happen if Kratos busted out of his God of War franchise and made his way to some other games? This…

The guys over at Hungarian video game site IDDQD had a little Photoshop contest to embellish other games with images of Kratos, and some of the results are priceless. While the DOOM one is probably the best one from an artistic standpoint, here are some of the more whimsical concepts:

I always wanted to see blood spew forth from those annoying Raving Rabbids- and how about Kratos playing with a different kind of axe?

Keira Knightley – Hottest Zombie Ever?

Over the years Worth1000 has done a number of “Zombiewood” contests to submit pics of what celebs would look like if they were part of the cast of The Walking Dead.

Keira Knightley is still hot as a zombie despite the fact that she is missing an arm. The site has a bunch of other celebrities done up as zombies too. I have to say Justin Bieber is the scariest looking zombie. His music already gives me the creeps; I would hate to see him shuffling after my brain.

The strangest one is the Tom Cruise zombie. We all know that the mothership would pick him up well before the infection spread. Hope over to to Worth 1000 and see tons of zombified stars for yourself.

Video Game Characters Escape into the Real World

Aled Lewis’ has done it again. The geeky mashup artist took a bunch of video game characters in their pure pixelated form and placed them in pictures of the real world. I’m sure that this concept has been explored a hundred times before – I think I might have made a few when I was a kid – but I think it’s the simplicity of Lewis’ chosen backgrounds that makes these pictures super effective.

The backgrounds bridge the gap between the virtual characters and our world – they’re consistent with the characters but at the same time unmistakably real. Although for some reason having Koopa stroll on a beach works too.

Good thing it’s just a photoshop of an otherwise real booth, whose purpose I don’t know, but is no doubt decent, necessary, benign. Because if this was an actual twitter booth, it could only have been made from congealed stupidity. And blue paint.

The authentic music from the game really puts me in the mood to dust of my game disc and play through again. Only this time in God mode. Or maybe not. I prefer functional thumbs to bloody stumps.

There’s been a story floating around the news lately about a guy dressed as Darth Vader robbed a bank in New York. Now it turns out Darth has been seen perpetrating all sorts of nasty business in keeping with his whole “Evil Empire” thing.

Sci-Fi Airshow: the Most Awesome Fake Exhibit You’Ll Ever See

Bill George has been in love with spaceships and other sci-fi props ever since he was a little boy. Now he’s a Visual Effects Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic, but even his job is not enough to satisfy his craving for fictional spaceships. So he put up the Sci-Fi Airshow, a place where everyone can see – and sometimes ride – old but beautiful spaceships, like the proto-space shuttle Orion, the flying sub aka the Stingray, and the eccentric Spindrift. By the way, none of those ships actually exist.

But who says we can’t have galleries and exhibits filled with non-existent spaceships? Armed with his imagination, his camera and the magical Photoshop, George depicted scenes of the fictional location of the Sci-Fi Airshow, filled with people and of course the spaceships. Here’s a sampling of slides from the Sci-Fi Airshow’s guided tour:

But the ultimate proof of George’s nerdery is that he actually writes a page’s worth of fake histories for each of the spaceships in the Sci-Fi Airshow, even making up mock-posters or pictures of crash sites to support the text. So let’s visit the Sci-Fi Airshow! Admission is free. Touching the spaceships is prohibited, not to mention impossible.

Needless to say that I’m a fan of Hajime Sorayama’s shiny, sexy robots, including the Björk-bot above.

LEGO Illusion: Poor Minifig Gets Escher’D

The photo was taken by PBase user bbzippo way back in 2004, and won 4th place in the PBase forum’s Illusion challenge. I think it’s been Photoshopped – there’s something weird going on in the edge of the crossbar, right on top of the right post. But that’s just me.

And Knoll said, “let there be an image editing program,” and there was Photoshop. Then the prophet Meninos came down from the mountains, and with him was a tablet – okay it’s a bar – in which are printed the 20 commandments commands of the original Photoshop. Thus it was known that the first command is, “Thou shalt lasso.” Okay I’ll stop now.

The commands are silkscreen printed on a 31.5″ x 6.7″ bar of MDF plywood, a simple yet attractive reminder of what our ancestors had to go through. No spot healing brush tool?! *gasp*
