Whatever their name, Todd Burka’s designs will make Photoshop fans think of the possibilities of edible editing.

The nuclear crisis that followed after the earthquake and tsunami rocked Japan caused a lot of people to panic. This resulted in geiger counters and radiation detectors selling out on the web a few hours after it was announced that the damaged nuclear plants in Fukushima were leaking and that trace amounts of radiation had been found to cross the seas onto the shores of California.

So it’s only fitting that this concept by Nils Ferber is aptly named the Fukushima Plate.

Because of the nuclear disaster, a lot of reports have come in saying that the majority of Japan’s food supply was contaminated with radiation. The Fukushima Plate is basically an ordinary plate that’s been fitted with a radiation meter.

In case you’ve got some foodstuff that’s imported from the Land of the Rising Sun, just heap it all up onto the Fukushima Plate and wait for the OLED rings to come on to tell you that it’s not safe to eat. While it looks pretty when it’s all lit up, what you’re aiming for here is actually no rings because that will mean that there’s no radiation in your food.

What do you think? Does the Fukushima Plate deserve to see the light of day and be made available commercially?

Millions of people around the world are starving, and will probably kill themselves for food. Wait that doesn’t make sense. You know what else doesn’t make sense? That someone out there thinks he can charge $15,000 (USD) for a plastic plate. Actually I’m not sure if it’s really plastic, it could be ceramic but whatevs. $15,000! For a plate that’s not even a hundred years old!

Ebay seller homisydal parted ways with his beloved 1989 Legend of Zelda collector’s item plate. It was in the mintest of conditions, as evidenced by its spotless bottom:

Yeah, that’s a $15,000 plate bottom all right. No doubt it was hard for homisydal to let go of his treasure, but I’m sure there was an extremely good reason behind it. Perhaps homisydal was having trouble putting food on the table. I’m sorry. I just had to. Seriously though $15,000? Maybe I should start hoarding random stuff. I can see it: 20 years from now I’ll sell a Logitech PS/2 mouse for $5,000,000. What do you mean that’s ridiculous? Surely it’ll be ultra-rare by then.

This elegantly minimal clock lets you create your own custom time-telling device using a combination of plates, cups and liquid of your choice.

Designed by Kouichi Okamoto with ceramicist Daniel Jo, the Water Clock consists of a small fired clay base topped with a pair of magnetic spheres. A pair of powerful magnets underneath the delicate clay surface move the tiny orbs in a circular path to tell the current time. While the spheres are magnetic, they’re actually buoyant, so if you fill up a glass with H2O, the “hands” of the clock actually float on the surface of the water. Each of the spheres can be placed into any dish, plate or other vessel you happen to have lying around.

And while all the designer’s pictures show the clock working with crystal clear water and delicate china, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t make your own clock using beer, wine, orange juice or Donkey Kong Jungle Juice swimming in a Dixie Riddle Cup. That’s the true beauty of this thing.

The Water Clock is available over at Generate for $299 (USD).

Thinking about picking up a new iPod Shuffle 3G, but think the basic brushed aluminum and black case designs a little drab for your flashy style? Miss the wide color selection of earlier 3G Shuffles? Well now you can brighten up your 3G with a fresh coat of color – for a price.

Apparently our pals over at Computer Choppers have made it their mission in life to color anodize and metallic plate anything and everything that can be anodized or plated. And the aluminum-shelled iPod Shuffle 3G fits that bill just perfectly. As was the case with their colorful anodized Mac Mini, these colors are much more durable than paint, and electrochemically bound to the metal so they won’t flake over time.

Now you’re looking at a price of $129 (USD) for a colorful Shuffle like the ones shown above (a $50 premium over Apple’s standard 4GB model), and prices go all the way up to $199 if you want to do something crazy like get yours plated in platinum. If you’re looking for a splash of color, you can order yours over at the Computer Choppers site.
