Whiteboards are great for classes and brainstorming, but since they aren’t usually portable, they can’t really work everywhere – that is until now. The Noteboard is a portable whiteboard that can expand to let you brainstorm ideas almost anywhere.

When it’s unfolded, the Noteboard is approximately the size of 27 notecards. Once it’s completely collapsed, it can fit in your pocket. Robin Thomas, the creator of the Noteboard, states that it’s a great alternative to tablets and paper. It’s true that it can be useful, but if you’ve used whiteboards a bit, you know that you’re always left with a greasy residue and marks all over your hands from the pens. Still, it’s a cool idea.

Robin is currently sold out of Noteboards, but is raising funds to help create another batch. Stop on by his website if you’re interested in getting in on the action or if you’d like instructions on how you can make your own using simple materials including contact paper and note cards.

This concept electric bike looks like an updated version of the original OSSA Monocasco bike that Santiago Herrero rode in the 1970s. However, this bike is an electric version, so you can use it pretty much anywhere without worrying about fuel efficiency and harming the environment. While it probably won’t burn the kind of rubber that the original did, it is an appealing compact and energy-efficient package.

The Monocasco Concept Bike was designed by ART-TIC Team and it’s a tribute to the original OSSA Monocasco and Herrero, who died on his OSSA in the 1970 Grand Prix. It’s definitely got that classic café racer look.

To make it into an comfortable everyday city bike though, the seating position might have to be changed a bit.

It will be interesting to see if this electric bike ever gets made. Since it was designed for OSSA, it’s always a possibility.

There are just those days where I wish I could leave the house without having to carry a bag or purse. But that’s near impossible these days, because aside from my wallet, I’ve got two mobile phones (one for work and one for personal use), my MP3 player, and my tablet.

I can survive without my tablet and mp3 player, but that still leaves me with three gadgets to cram into my two pants pockets. Well, technically, I have four, but I’m not a fan of back pockets, what with so many pickpockets roaming the streets.

A possible solution? The Underfuse. It’s a project up on Kickstarter by Tal Cohen. It’s basically an iron-on pocket that’s designed especially for working out, when you’re running, or when you’re traveling. Each underfuse pocket is made from a durable material designed specifically to be fused to workout wear and other smooth fabrics.

By making an $8 pledge, you can get your hands on one Underfuse pocket, complete with instructions. As of writing, the Underfuse is already more than 100% funded, so you’re sure to get yourself some extra pockets if you pledge.

This watch is perfect for the gentlemen, who can’t abide using anything but a proper pocket watch. The Tokyoflash Kisai Rogue Touch Pocket Watch will probably take a bit more time to read than an analog version, but it will sure get some attention from everyone.

The watch is encased in stainless steel and has a futuristic touchscreen interface. It works with a hybrid combination of LCD/LEDs, so it will be easily readable during the night or day. If you need more light, just push a button and the LEDs will flare up to allow you to read the time. The screen locks after 60 seconds and can be unlocked with a swipe. It’s also got an on-screen animation and alarm clock features.

The display isn’t that hard to read. The outer ring shows the hours, while the inner one shows the minutes. My guess is that you could train yourself to read the time with a glance pretty easily. It’s available in red, blue, green, or “natural” LCD colors and sells for $149 (USD) for the next two days over at Tokyoflash. After that, the price jumps up to $169.

My sister loves to travel but still hasn’t mastered how to travel light. Whenever we fly somewhere together, she’s always bringing a bag or two more than anyone else on the trip, which is why I immediately thought of her when I spotted this Rufus Roo ‘Big Pocket’ Travel Jacket.

The jacket looks pretty much like a vest, except that it’s got a lot of huge pockets to hold all of that extra stuff that you can’t cram into your hand carry luggage or handbag anymore. Unlike a life vest, this one will help you sink rather than keep you afloat, that’s for sure.

It’s got two big pockets in front to stash some extra clothing, two bigger pockets near the waist for virtually any stuff you want to bring along, and two extra pockets a little further down for the small stuff. I can’t really imagine stashing shoes or laptops in the bigger pocket compartments because I think I’d literally be walking at a snail’s pace by then. While it’s not exactly an original concept, I still think it’s a nice idea to provide some extra storage space for travelers.

Who would think that the day would come that measuring tapes would be rendered, well, second rate or second class when it comes to measuring? After all, that was the only reason and purpose for which they were created.

They served their purpose well for the past few decades or so while they reigned supreme as the top measuring device for carpenters, furniture makers, and DIY enthusiasts.

Now Smart String, another measuring tool, might just be the one that can upstage it. No metal tape measures here that make it hard to measure the circumference of round or irregularly-shaped objects here, just pure string.

Just pull on the metal tab, use the string to measure whatever it is you want to measure, and read the length off the digital display on the Smart String unit. It’s small and handy, as you can see, and can measure objects up to 50″ in length and store up to three measurements in memory. And if you were wondering why it has keypads that look like that of a calculator’s, that’s because the Smart String doubles as a calculator, too. And if you need a longer version, they’re already working on the 12-foot, industrial-strength Smart String 2.

Smart String is available from ThinkGeek for $11.99 (USD). It’s a good deal, if you ask me.

The little vermin don’t actually pop up, but the tiny moley-moles light up and then you quickly tap them on their heads before they stop. There’s no real scoring system, so it’s really just a fun way to pass some time. Here’s a clip of the Mini Whack-It in action:

Noisy, eh? I suppose if you get really annoyed with this thing, you could always get the mallet out and try and play with that. Mini Whack-It is available over at Strapya World for $14.70 (USD).

Boy, how far we’ve come in the last decade. Just a few years back, the idea of full HD video for the masses was still just a pipe-dream, and now you can get cheap consumer cameras that shoot 1080p video, and Blu-ray players for about $100 that also play back the super-sharp format. Now, you can get a pocket-sized media player that can play full HD 1080p video anywhere you go.

Measuring just 2.95″ (w) x 2.5″ (d) x .59″ (h), Crystal Acoustics’ PicoHD5.1 portable media player is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but it can play full HD video files through its built-in HDMI port. It surpports video files in a variety of formats including MKV, DivX, XVID, AVI, M2TS, WMV9, MPG 1/2/4, FLV, RM, TS and VOB files. Audio support is available for FLAC, MP3, OGG, WMA and WAV formats.

Files are played of of an SD, SDHC and MMC memory card, or via a USB data source such as a flash drive or external hard drives using FAT, FAT32, or NTFS extended file systems. It also offers multichannel 5.1 digital coax audio, and down-mix Dolby Digital and DTS to stereo. Each player also includes a wireless IR remote, which means you can program it to work with your universal remotes too. I also like how it’s not made from cheap plastic. This little dynamo is built from durable black anodized aluminum.

It looks like the PicoHD5.1 will be shipping soon in three different versions – one for the UK, one for the US, and another model which I assume to be for other markets. They should retail for about £49.99 (appx. $83 USD) over at the Crystal Acoustics website.

I like the holidays, but my in-laws can really piss me off. My mother-in-law really gets to me because she is a dumb-ass. I hope that trait isn’t hereditary because if my wife goes moron all the sudden we are going to have a big problem. I don’t drink normally, but when I hear she is coming over, I reach for a bottle of something. I’ll swig Listerine if it will make her easier to deal with.

If you have a similar issue with your in-laws, you might benefit from having a nice stout martini ready to go in a kit form. This DIY Martini kit uses a small mint tin like Altoids come in. The extent of the DIY nature of this seems to be drilling a hole so you can put one of those water gun stoppers in the bottom of the tin.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You keep a couple small bottles of liquor in the thing and an olive in a small baggie so when the need hits you are ready to mix. I guess it’s a good thing I don’t drink or I’d be a sloshing drunk during the holidays. Check out the video to see this thing in action.

I’ll start out by saying that I’m really not all that excited by all the pocket projectors that have started to flood the market. At least not yet. I mean really, how many of us really need a tiny dim projector when we’ve got giant 60-inch LCDs and Plasmas in our living rooms these days. I can honestly say this is the first time that I’ve seen a really cool and unique idea for the pico-projector – using it as part of a gaming controller.

The guys at Microvision have put together this demo of their PicoP display engine, strapped to a motion-sensing FPS gun controller – and it’s awesome! The system tracks your movements in real time and projects a heads-up display on a blank white wall to keep you immersed in the gameplay. The tiny mobile projector can crank out images up to 200-inches (assuming you’re in pitch darkness), and can automatically produce a distortion-free image on flat or curved surfaces. For purposes of this demo, the controller is wired up to play a game of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Want to see it in person? If you happen to be in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada over the course of the next couple of days, Microvision is showing off the PicoP gaming demo at the Intel Extreme Masters North American Championship at the West Edmonton Mall. While you’re there, you can be dazzled by the m4d 5k1llz of some of the best video gamers in world.

Too violent for you? The Microvision guys will also be showing off a projector-controller demo with Aladdin flying around on a magic carpet. I’ll be standing on the other side of the room with my GunCon to shoot it down.

Nowadays, beta males are considered cool guys. There’s Chuck. There’s Leonard and Sheldon. There’s Justin Long in Die Hard 4.0. There’s Dwight Schrute. Okay maybe not Dwight. But you get it right? And when something is marketed as cool, you can bet your neighbor’s family that the media and the market will milk the living crap out of that thing. Take the Ultimate Pocket Protector:

Look at that ad. Who the hell would want to look like that? Yet that is the ultimate purpose of the ultimate pocket protector. It proclaims that the wearer is a geek in the same way that a black shirt with the “Anarchy” sign on it proclaims that the wearer likes punk music. Or anarchy. Sure, the pocket protector has isn’t altogether useless because it has compartments for pens, pencils, and even mp3 players and flash disks. But come on, everyone has mp3 players and flash disks nowadays. Then you have the stickers. A sticker for π or a d12 is still kind of cool, but “r0x0r”? “uber nerd”? This “geekwear” caters to people who want to become stereotypes. How dumb is that.

Bottomline: if you want your kid to get 6.0221415 × 1023 noogies and wedgies a day, then go ahead, buy the Ultimate Pocket Protector at Discover This for $5.49 USD. Lifetime of shame and embarrassment included.

Sony says their new VAIO type-P series ultra-mobile personal computers (UMPCs) are the lightest full-fledged Windows machines you can buy. Now you can pre-order them for delivery starting this February.

The guys over at Sony Style have started to accept pre-orders for the sexy compact 1.4 pound PC that runs a full version of Windows Vista, despite the fact that it can fit in (or at least stick out of) your pocket.

At the heart of the Type-P is it compact 8″ display, offering an amazingly crisp 1600 x 768 resolution LCD screen with a bright, power-saving LED backlight. I think that’s better resolution than my old 15″ laptop has. There’s also a built-in webcam and microphone for live video and audio chat.

Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n networking and Bluetooth connectivity are built in. The Type-P also includes on-board GPS navigation with turn-by-turn directions. Run time for the included Li-ion battery pack is rated at appx. 4 hours under normal usage, but you can upgrade to a larger battery for up to 8 hours on a charge.

The VAIO Type-P is available in Crystal White, Garnet Red, Onyx Black, and Peridot Green for those of you looking for a bit of color in your UMPC.

Prices for the Type-P start at $899.99 (USD) for the VGN-P530, with an Atom Z520 1.33GHz CP, Vista Home Basic and a 60GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. The VGN-P588 ($1199.99) adds Vista Home Premium, and swaps the hard drive for a 64GB SSD (solid state drive). The top-of-the-line VGN-P598 ($1499.99) bumps the drive up to a 128GB SSD. If you’re looking to fully customize your Type-P or add a faster processor, check out the pre-order Japanese P90 over at GeekStuff4U.

Now I just need to find a pair of pants with bigger pockets.

You can buy on of these groovy laptop sleeves for $40 from Barry’s Farm. The sleeve is made of heavy duty vinyl and padded with 1/4 fabric backed foam, with a flannel lining to caress your computer.

Despite its size, Waves’ iGTR Personal Guitar Processor is a sophisticated piece of music gear, packing in a variety of effects which simulate the sounds of concert amplifiers and effect processors.

The portable gadget offers up a variety of virtual amp sound profiles which start out as simple as “Warm”, “Normal” and “Bright”, but that can be tuned and tweaked to the exact sound you like. The iGTR also offers effects like Phase, Tremelo and Wah-Wah, as well as Reverb, Chorus and Delay settings.

The Multi-Tector is the latest creation from the novelty house of Stupidiotic. Simply flip the handheld detector to the appropriate setting, aim it at your friends, and it’ll pick out your selected target with ease.

Actually, the gadget is a practical joke, which lets YOU decide who it singles out. There’s an inconspicuous button that lets you make the alarm light and sound go off on the mark of your choice. There’s also slightly edgier “adult” version if you don’t already swear enough times during the day.

Simple, yet effective, the Multi-Tector is available from Stupidiotic for just $8 bucks.

There’s been plenty of buzz in the industry surrounding tiny projectors that will some day make their way into mobile phones and other portable gadgets, but they’re mostly either stuck in the prototype phase, extremely expensive, or both. While this pint-sized projector won’t win any awards for image quality, it’s actually hitting the market within a month, and costs only about $200.

Measuring in at about 6.7″x 3.9″x 3.5″, the so-called “Micro Projector” is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Sure, it can only cast an image that’s around 30-inches diagonal before it really degrades, but what was the last time you could throw a 30-inch screen in your backpack?

As you can see from the screen image above, The Micro Projector’s 480×240 resolution isn’t going to give your 1080p HDTV a run for its money, but it might impress your friends to whip one of these out of your bag and connect one of those portable FC Mobile Nintendo NES consoles to get your retro game on anywhere you can find a clean white surface. Oh yeah, did I happen to mention that it’ll run on four AA batteries for about 2.5 hours at a time?

It’s compatible with both NTSC and PAL devices, and connects to any device with a composite video output. There’s also a built-in speaker, so you can hear what you’re watching as well. The tiny projector can even play movies, music and display photos directly from an SD card if you happen to have some digital media lying around. Keep in mind that you’ll probably want to turn down the lights in the room to get a decent image out of this projector – while it’s powered by a high-power LED light source, it’s still not all that bright.

You can find the Micro Projector over at UK gadget shop DrinkStuff for £99.95 (appx. $195 USD).

Think of the latest contraption from Japan’s Bandai as a virtual soothsayer. The pocket-sized device uses a digital personality assessment, along with a dash hocus pocus and other less-than-scientific gibberish to predict your future.

The Mirai Scope starts out by asking its owner about fifty personal questions, which help to assign you one of 236 unique personality types (you can try out the actual test here, if you’re up for a little Japanese). Once you’ve been successfully pigeonholed by the Mirai, your profile is combined with some “biorhythm” BS to help triangulate your course in life.

You’ll be able to ask for predictions on specific topics such as health, wealth, employment and your love life. There’s even some sort of weird infrared profile-sharing feature which lets you predict the future for you and your significant other if you care to beam your information through the air.

It’s likely that the Mirai Scope will remain a Japanese exclusive, but if you’re willing to go the extra mile to fly one in, you should be able to come late March for ¥2,980 (appx. $28 USD).

Can’t get enough Guitar Hero? Well now you can carry a miniature version of the game anywhere you go. The 7 ¾” X 3” guitar is small enough to easily carry around in your backpack, but the neck folds down so you can even fit it in your pocket.

Basic Fun’s pint-sized Guitar Hero Caribiner game offers up a variety of rock tunes from both Guitar Hero I and II, including Smoke on the Water, Rock this Town, Cherry Pie, Killer Queen, You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, Miserlou, Heart Shaped Box, Message in a Bottle, Jessica, and Surrender. An LCD screen displays the notes required, and you simply tap on the color-coded buttons when you’re ready to jam. There’s even a miniature version of the all-important “whammy bar” so you can give your music some extra finesse.

The guys at Basic Fun worked closely with the game’s original developers at Activision and Red Octane to ensure the tiny game captures the spirit of the original.

Expect the pocket Guitar Hero Caribiner to hit major retailers such as Target, KB Toys and Toys ‘R’ Us by early March for just $14.99.

The Manfrotto 797 Modo Pocket camera mount is so tiny, that when folded up it fits easily on your keychain. The mini stand has a hinged design that lets you adjust the angle of your camera, as well as the ability to deal with angled surfaces. It’s got four tiny rubber feet to help stabilize your camera too.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found a place you can order these outside of France, but you might be able to get one shipped to you by Digit-Photo if you happen to Parlez-Vous Français. You also might want to check with B&H Photo, since they carry the Manfrotto line.

While a number of companies are working on miniature video projection technology, every one I’ve seen is still just at the prototype stage. While it’s not as tiny as some of the designs being shown by TI, Microvision and Explay, these projectors are actually available for purchase.

China’s Oculon has revealed their new pocket-sized Hikari Pro920 projectors. Available in both VGA ($299) and SVGA ($399) models, the pair can crank out a front-projected image onto any white surface. Don’t expect to run your home theater with one of these, though. They’re designed to project very small images (12-inches diagonal from 1 foot, 24-inches from 1 meter), and brightness drops of pretty dramatically at any size larger than that.

Still, if you’re looking for the smallest projector you can buy today, these are worth a look.
