Though at the time, we didn’t find the droids we were looking for.

R2 in fancy dress with a pipe? Someone please make a new Sherlock Holmes with the little droid as Holmes and C-3PO as Watson. I would pay good money to see that and it would beat the whole Data/Geordi Holmes thing from Star Trek.

Jabba certainly still looks evil, but now he’s an evil gentleman from the past. He could easily be Holmes’ arch-enemy Moriarty. Chewbacca is also available, but he just looks strange to me.

You can buy all of these portraits over on KULT, with prices starting at $125(USD). For that price, you get an unframed 9″ x 13″ Limited Edition hand numbered giclée print signed by the artist with a Certificate of Authenticity.

This awesome piece of art was created by Joe Black using over 5,500 toy soldiers, carefully positioned to form a large image. The pointillist image is called Made in China and it’s a portrait depicting a Chinese soldier that was originally taken by photographer Robert Capa and appeared on the cover of LIFE Magazine in 1938.

Each of the toy soldiers was glued on, then hit with spray paint to complete the image. It’s quite an amazing piece of art, which uses toys to make a statement about war.

Made in China was most recently on display last October at the Moniker Art Fair in London. Hopefully, it’ll make the rounds again so we can see it up close and in person.

I can’t decide which one I like best, but I just love the uncomfortable look on Luke’s face in both of these portraits. I’m sure he’s worried about how embarrassed he’d beif his fellow Rebel Alliance classmates saw these.

If you’ve got a bunch of spare network cable or wires lying around? Maybe you should try and make something constructive out of them, instead of letting them accumulate dust. How about a self-portrait? That’s just what Los Angeles artist Kasey McMahon did.

This piece is called Connected and it looks awesome. Apparently, she didn’t just use CAT5 cable, but a bunch of other cables as well. Of course, if she only used wire, they whole thing would have collapsed into a pile of spaghetti, so she had to cheat a little bit and include some steel structure under the cables to hold the sculpture in place.

What would you make if you had a bunch of spare cable lying around, and the artistic talent to pull something like this off?

Will we ever run out of creative uses for those primitive little LEGO bricks? I think not. Brickfan (Reasonably Clever) Chris Doyle has created a functioning LEGO remake of the infamous Picture of Dorian Gray. Chris actually retitled his version A Portrait of Dorian Bley, a reference to a “controversial” blue-grey LEGO color that replaced “Classic Slate,” oh my.

At first glance, the image just looks like a giant portrait of a smiling yellow Minifig. But as you move past the face of the portrait, the dark (blay) side of LEGOland comes out.

Doyle managed to achieve an effect similar to those lenticular moving images by using alternating blocks of angled LEGO wedges. Check out the video below to see the illusion in action.

Chris, I’d say that was more than reasonably clever.

This humanoid robot holds a pen in its hand and can draw an image of any person who stands in front of it.

Created by robotic researcher Sylvain Calinon, the robot recognizes when there’s a face in its field of view, then snaps a digital photo and extracts the major characteristics of their visage. Once that’s done, the robot turns itself into an X/Y plotter, picking up an old-fashioned quill pen and gradually filling in the details of a portrait.

I think it would be really cool to set up a bunch of these in a row, creating different styles of art using ink, pastel, oils and acrylics. Sylvain, are you listening?
