While this isn’t the first design to add lights to an umbrella, the Path Illuminating Umbrella looks like something that a sane person would actually use. Instead of peppering the canopy with LEDs, this practical umbrella has its flashlight attached to the handle, so you can easily focus the light on what’s ahead of you.

The flashlight is made with 3 white LEDs that provide 100 lumens of light; the LEDs are powered by 3 AAA batteries for up to 48 hours – not long enough to survive in Silent Hill, but it’ll do. It can also be articulated up to 180º, so you can keep tabs on Pyramid Head as he hunts you down.

Hammacher Schlemmer sells the Path Illuminating Umbrella for $40 (USD). Cheapskates can pull off a Dead Rising and just duct-tape a flashlight and umbrella together.

RPGs and other games with rich fictional histories have long had a select few fans that could cite obscure trivia like they were just telling the time, like the famous Red Shirt Guy. You’d think that with such voluminous amounts of fake facts (fakts?) to keep track of, games like WoW or Elder Scrolls would have come up with this innovation. But no, it had to come from a little Nintendo DS game. What innovation am I talking about? Hyperlinked conversations, of course:

Camelot Software, developers of upcoming game Golden Sun: Dark Dawn – the first DS game of the Golden Sun series – were smart enough to include links to information about people, places and events when they are mentioned in conversations. In the example shown above, tapping Matthew’s name would make the encyclopedia entry to the right pop up on the top screen of the DS. Simple but extremely practical, especially if you’re new to the series. This is one feature that needs to be emulated industry-wide. It’s a shame Golden Sun’s doesn’t have hyperlinks within the hyperlinked encyclopedia entries, though.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn will be released on November 29, 2010. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $35 (USD).

Are you a neat freak? Then I’m sure you like to keep your unused cables systematically stored. You could use a rubber band, or zip ties, but the quirky community thinks they have a better solution. An uglier one, but overall better. I think. They’ve put their brain tanks together and come up with Cable Caps, stretchable bands with heads that serve as covers for the end of a standard USB cable.

Obviously these are all conceptual images, but since quirky is already accepting pre-sales (pre-sales are different from pre-orders in that a set number of pre-sales must be reached before the product is actually manufactured), I’m pretty sure the real Cable Caps will be as creepy as these mock ups. Still can’t figure out how they’re used? Here, let “printer man” (Really? Printer man? It took a group of people to come up with that?) show you how.

See? Despite their deranged looks, the Cable Caps are pretty easy to use: just thread the USB’s head through the slot in the middle of the band, stick it into the head, and then wrap the rest of the band around the rest of the cable. There are six designs in all, none of them decent.

As I said, pre-sales are now being accepted at quirky. Cable Caps are sold in sets of three for $8 (USD) per set. They’re pretty useful, just don’t stare at them.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly done my fair share of plugging in a flash drive to and fro between computers to copy files, which is why I can’t believe I haven’t heard of PQI’s Cool Drive U360. It’s a flash drive that can also act as a bridge between two computers via USB, allowing for 2-way data transfer, eliminating the need to setup or join a full-fledged LAN. The Cool Drive U360′s transfers data at up to 21 MB/s.

However, the file transfer is mediated by a program called Ur-Transfer, so there’s a chance that the device is for computers running Windows only. Sad face for me and my Mac. The software can also synchronize Outlook data, or you can tell it which folders you want to be synced. Sweet. PQI’s press release also says that the software’s icon will reflect the remaining capacity on the Cool Drive U360′s flash memory.

The Cool Drive U360 will be available in varying capacities, from 4GB to 16 GB. Price and date of availability are still unknown; better bookmark PQI’s website for future updates on this very practical device.

The LightWedge reading light is a very handy device that lights a whole page of a book – and nothing else, allowing you to read without disturbing the people around you. Unless you start reading aloud. The LightWedge is equipped with “distortion-free, optical grade acrylic lens” and LED lights that can run up to 40 hours on 4 AAA batteries.

And when you’re done reading for the day, just leave it between the pages as a bookmark. Or maybe not; it may be a bit thick and could damage your book if you leave it wedged in for a while. LightWedge comes in two sizes: regular book-size (9.5″ x 6.75″ x .5″) that sells for $22 USD, and paperback size (7.4″ x 5.5″ x .5″), both available at ThinkGeek.

Now if only they’d make one of these for the Kindle.

Gege Crochet loves scarves. I think “scarves” is a weird word. Fortunately Gege’s scarves are anything but weird, like this nice Princess Toadstool scarf.

She said that she made this scarf to complement a Mario scarf that she also made. But then she didn’t like the back of the scarf with all the ends weaved in, so she made a pocket! I don’t understand how that solves things – or what the problem was to begin with - but yay for you Gege Crochet!

As you can see a DS fits nicely into the pocket. Gege says that “the DS provides a nice heft to the scarf, so if you are walking down the road and are mugged by one of Bowser’s minions, you can swing the scarf and whack them in the head.” And that’s what scarves are for.

Check out Gege’s blog and her Flickr page to see more of her crocheted creations. While Gege’s crafting skills are enviable, what I really envy about her is that she lives somewhere cold enough that she can wear a scarf, because I’m being boiled alive back here. I think the sun moved in next door. My sweat is sweating. People are spontaneously evaporating outside.

The concept behind myKeyO‘s Keyboard Organizer is so simple it’s brilliant, turning an otherwise ordinary USB computer keyboard into a personal storage.

myKeyO takes advantage of the fact that today’s technology allows for very thin keyboards. The Keyboard Organizer adds functionality while only adding a tenth of an inch to the thickness of ordinary keyboards. That’s a small compromise for the convenience it provides. Plus, the internal storage isn’t just empty space beneath the keyboard; it’s compartmentalized and even has a disc holder.

The Keyboard Organizer currently has two models with different multimedia buttons. They’re both available in plain black or plain white, but myKeyO can also print an image on the keyboard. Ideally these custom keyboards would make for great gifts or even serve as a platform for advertising; however, most of the designs featured on myKeyO’s website obscured the keys.

You can get a Keyboard Organizer for $2o to $35 (USD), depending on the model and color. The pics here are of the $35 model, the MK-2100. It has 5 programmable buttons, a volume scroll and mouse scroll wheel, plus multimedia controls: play, pause, stop, rewind, forward and mute. A customized MK-2100 costs either $80 or $60, depending on the quality of print, while the lower-priced MK-1900 can be customized for $35 or $50 depending on the quality of print.Place your orders here.

Polish designers Witek Stefaniak and Anielka Zdanowicz observed that conventional speakers rarely fit in with our living spaces because of their appearance, so they end up being “put away in the corner of the room or hidden in the wall”. I’ve made the same observation. Anyone blessed with eyesight has made the same observation. If you met a Cro-Magnon man and invited him into your house he will undoubtedly make the same observation. But since Witek and Anielka are also blessed with designing skills and cool last names like “Zdanowicz”, they were able to come up with sexy yet practical shapes and structures for speakers.

They call their designs “soundshelf.” While it’s true that Pottery Barn is already selling speakers that also double as bookshelves, the soundshelf sets itself apart from Pottery Barn’s product in a couple of ways. First of all, if you look closely at the design you’ll see that the whole thing is a speaker. Pottery Barn’s bookshelf has speakers. The soundshelf is a speaker. Second of all, it’s way sexier.

If the soundshelf does end up being produced and sold I hope that they won’t be too expensive. It’s a product that maximizes space and function and we all need things like that. Maybe someone at MAKE can whip up a cheap version. Maybe Ben Heck can make a PS3shelf. That can read your books aloud. And doubles as a jet pack.

Laptop owning cheapskates rejoice! Like all other laptop owners, I know that you’re concerned about the heat that your laptop generates, as well as the stress on your back from countless hours of being hunched down while using your laptop. If you’ve been holding off on purchasing those usb powered, ergonomic cooling pads, hold off no more. La Tosta is here to save the day.

The La Tosta is elegant in its simplicity: they’re just a pair of curved steel bars that prop up your laptop, allowing the good blue arrow cool air to move in underneath your laptop and forcing the bad red arrow hot airs to leave.

As you can see the La Tosta (ancient Spanish phrase meaning “Cheap Portable Laptop Stand”) comes with caps that grip the surface of your desk and your laptop. This also ensures that neither your glass dinner table or your brand new Macbook Pro will get scratched.

By propping up your computer you’re not forced to slouch anymore, so La Tosta helps your posture as well. The guy in the picture doesn’t seem impressed however. Probably because he’s worried that some of his ports are being blocked by La Tosta, which is not really a problem because you can easily adjust the bars depending on your needs. But let’s not mind the party pooper: you’ve yet to hear the best thing about this product, which is that it’s a steal at $10 USD. The price is originally $13, but Starlight Creations are slashing off $3 off La Tosta’s price until March 1. So take a deep breath, relax, take out your wallet, pull out a Hamilton and head on to Starlight Creations’ shop.

We’ve seen it so many times on TV: the handsome hotshot attorney is inside his office, squinting and frowning while massaging his temples to indicate that he’s thinking of a way to win his beautiful client’s case… and heart, of course. Then the secretary comes in and says that he has a call from some guy, perhaps his wife. And then the handsome hotshot attorney says, “Tell her I’m not here/ I’m busy frowning and squinting/ I’m about to commit adultery.” The secretary dutifully obeys, and the call doesn’t get through! Three cheers for secretaries!

Unfortunately, most of us can’t afford secretaries to screen our calls, which means that from time to time we have to deal with prank callers, wrong number callers and *groan* telemarketers. So we pray to the gadget gods for answer. Rise and rejoice, my friends, because trueCall is here.

The funny thing about trueCall is that it was actually developed by a couple of lads who used to work in the call center industry. I actually worked as a customer service agent for a few months, and all I can say is that annoying and stupid people can be found on both sides of the line. But anyway, let me just tone down the bright green checkmarks and bright orange superpowers of the trueCall: Look at trueCall as the gadget that it is and not as a magical device and you’ll be fine. In other words, trueCall cannot automatically stop these annoying calls without initial instructions.

trueCall uses a simple classification for incoming numbers: it has a list of numbers to block called a Zap list, a list of numbers to allow straight through called a Star list, and obviously numbers which have yet to be categorized. And yes, you’ll have to instruct trueCall which numbers to allow and which to block. But wait! There’s more, because all you have to do is press the # key to tell trueCall to zap the number, or press * to star it. You can zap or star incoming calls, calls that you’re already on and even recorded calls, as long as trueCall has that number, i.e. as long as you have caller ID and the caller’s number is recorded.

When a call comes in trueCall doesn’t ring your phone immediately. If the number is starred then the call proceeds as usual. If the number is zapped then trueCall plays a voice message telling the caller that he’s blocked, and your phone won’t even ring. Nice. If the number is unknown, then it gets a bit tedious. The caller is asked to state his name, at which point your phone rings and trueCall plays back the caller’s voice. At this point you can zap, star, or have the caller leave a message so you can hang up the phone. If the caller remains silent then trueCall simply hangs up on them.

Since trueCall ltd. isn’t paying me to pimp their gadget I’ll just point you to their website, where there are more details as well as a video which will explain things in depth. If at this point you’re already on your knees with tears streaming down your face, screaming, “Hallelujah!!! This is the Knees of the Bees’ Knees!!! The Suffering stops now! Where do I sign?!”, head on to trueCall ltd.’s shop and buy one for £97.50 ($144 USD).

[via Inventor Spot]

A pair of designers, Jae-yun Kim & Jong-Su Lee, have come up with a speed bump that actually knows and rewards you if you’re obeying speed limits. Vehicles who just gun it upon driving over the speed bump will encounter a normal speed bump, but those who do slow down to below 30 km/h (about 19 mi/h) will be given milk & cookies and a pat on the back. No actually the speed bump will flatten, i.e. disappear, for vehicles who have already reduced their speed.

Since it’s more than just a lump of concrete with black and yellow paint, this smart speed bump will surely be more expensive. But personally I think it’s worth it. Even if it doesn’t give pats on the back. Not only will this device motivate people to drive safely, it will also lead to less road accidents, especially in places where it rains or snows a lot.

But seriously, OHSO’s pocket toothbrush is not only stylish, it’s also very practical. The most notable feature of this toothbrush is that it can carry toothpaste in its handle. All you have to do is turn the handle’s knob and toothpaste comes out! Tilt down and the paste goes to the bristles.

What’s more, the handle also has a window so you can see how much toothpaste is inside. When you run out, just plug your toothpaste’s tube into the handle to refill it. An adapter is included to make sure that all toothpaste tubes are compatible with the handle.

The OHSO pocket toothbrush can be yours for $17.99 over on ThinkGeek. I wonder which would be better: a toothbrush that also carries toothpaste, or toothpaste that also carries a toothbrush? Hmm.
