This amazing-looking hologram-like display is made out of a two-dimensional image that’s projected onto a curtain of water vapor. The whole thing looks incredible, and quite realistic. I guess that Leia should have been pleading for DIY-Kenobi instead of Obi-Wan.

It’s the work of Chris Weibert, who’s also known as ChristopherTalosian on YouTube. The whole thing was jury-rigged together using everyday items. The water vapor is produced by an ultrasonic humidifier that’s been hacked onto a laminar flow nozzle, which in turn is made out of a bunch of drinking straws. Now that’s a cool use of straws. The humidifier came from a thrift store, while the fans came from computers.

The thin, even sheet of vapor mist is able to catch light projected onto it from the rear, giving it an effect not dissimilar from the original projected Leia in A New Hope. Now he just needs to build the projector into an R2-D2 robot and it’ll be perfect.

No princesses were harmed to make these 6″ buns, because they’re made from synthetic hair. I can’t guarantee the safety of synthetic princesses though. They could be clones working for the Empire. By default, the buns are made of auburn hair, but you can also ask for blonde or red hair. The buns will also come with instructions for both temporary and permanent attachment.

Either way, even with Darth Vader gone, the Skywalkers still have to celebrate Christmas, even if they are in a galaxy far, far away.

Chris McVeigh came up with a couple of fun scenes of a LEGO Star Wars Christmas. The Halifax-based photographer has all sorts of fun minifig photos and other cool LEGO creations that you can check out on his Flickr site or his Tumblr.

If you like these then you can get some prints of these and other shots over at Chris’ Society6 site. Most of them are available as 10″×7″ prints and sell for $16 (USD) each.

From Sideshow Collectibles and Lucasfilm comes this limited-edition diorama of a classic scene from the Return of the Jedi. Okay I actually don’t know if it’s a classic scene or not because I’m not a big Star Wars fan. I don’t even remember this scene; I had to look it up in Wikipedia. Anyway this diorama is a freakin’ conundrum – on the one hand you have the sexy Princess Leia in her slave outfit (that’s a classic isn’t it?). Veeery Nice. Especially the view from behind. On the other hand. 90% of the 7.5″ x 14.5″ x 9″ diorama is a slimy giant slug with one of his eyeballs about to pop out of its socket because the slug’s being choked to death. Boner Shrinker.

Unless of course you have a thing for slimy giant slugs with one of their eyeballs about to pop out of its socket because they’re being choked to death. But if that was the case Princess Leia would just be a distraction. Dammit! Make up your mind diorama! The “You’re Going To Regret This” diorama won’t be released until the 3rd quarter of this year, but you can pre-order it now at Sideshow Collectibles for $225 (USD).

I know that Halloween’s still more than a month away, but after seeing the awesomely cute Barf Vader, I decided to do a thorough research on – okay I hit Amazon. and Etsy. More on that later; let’s just say that most of the costumes will make your spawn ten times more adorable, while some will probably cause your child to hate you when he or she grows up and sees your old Halloween pictures. In honor of Barf Vader, let’s start with the Darth Vader costume, which sells for $20 to $33 (USD) (price depends on size).

If little Anakin was wearing that when Qui-Gon Jinn met him, I’m sure the Jedi Master would’ve iced the Naboo slave on the spot. Or not. The costume is cute after all. But what if your kid is a little older, and really wants a taste of the Dark Side? Etsy seller katesy has got just the thing. Give her your child’s measurements (your child’s sir, not yours) and $200, and she’ll whip up this…this…thing.

The picture reminds me of this joke I read somewhere: dad buys his son a Darth Vader mask, son wears it and goes, “Daddy, I am your father.” Anyway. We have to call on Yoda to defeat this Crocs-wearing Sith Lord!

FORCE SMILE! It works all the time. The Yoda costume is also available at Amazon for $22. But what about your little girl? Dress her up in this Princess Leia Costume. It sells for $19 to $28. Cinnamon roll hair included.

If on the other hand you think your kid will grow up to be a robot enthusiast, you might want to get the $20 R2-D2 Costume. Actually don’t. I only included it here for the sake of completion; I’m sure you can come up with something better than this.

What about for parents who hate their kids? I’ve got something for you as well: for only $20 to $37, the Chewbacca costume will ensure that your kid will have no treats – or friends – come Halloween. Your kid will look like Ultimate Warrior dunked in poo.

What if you want to eat your kid? Two words: Pizza Baby.

I’m not really that big of a Star Wars fan though, so I don’t which Episode Pizza Baby appeared. Was Pizza Baby in the Cantina scene?

Instructables contributors never cease to amaze me with the wonders they conceptualize and create. We may have reached the craftastic zenith with these DIY stuffed animal headphones. I myself have never felt the urge for my ears to cuddle up with my headphones, but maybe I’m missing out.

The project was posted by the aptly named Wurlitzergirl (who presumably cranks old-timey organ music through those those cuddly koala bears.) She says that all you need is one pair of cheap headphones, two stuffed animals (preferably the type with a seam up its back,) a seam ripper, needle and thread, and some quality music- and she claims you can make ‘em in only 10 minutes. Not too tough. Of course, this is all assuming you want to have the Princess Leia-style look in which the cinnamon bun thingies are replaced with rather large plush animals. Which you probably don’t. Still, A+ for creativity and for having the cojones to wear this out in public.

On another note: do you think all that stuffing and fuzz has noise-canceling properties?

Peep the project at Instructables.

Cisco has unveiled and demonstrated their new On-Stage TelePresence Holographic Video Conferencing. In layman’s terms, it means that now you can actually do that thing they do in Star Wars when they talk to a Princess Leia hologram, and I have to say, it looks quite convincing.

The video is pretty boring except for the fact that it’s a guy on stage talking to two holograms of people who are in other countries. In fact, they look so realistic that it took me a while to figure out that they were holograms. I kept advancing the video to look for the hologram part. So I think that’s proof-positive that this is fully legit.

This is really heartening because there are so many things from the 70s and 80s that we were supposed to have in the future, and we still don’t have them. Hello, hoverboards? Robot servants? Flying cars? Vacations on the moon? Robocop? And all we got is the Internet. OK, OK, actually the Internet is way cooler than all of those things I just named. But still, I’m glad someone’s ticked one of these “future” technologies off the list and put it squarely into the present.
