The G.I.A. (Gestural Interactive Automaton) is a robotic sculpture that was created by Daniel Jay Bertner. It is mounted on the wall and it is basically a projection sphere and a webcam attached to three servo-controlled articulating arms. A human face is projected onto the sphere, and that face that will watch your every move.
The face follows you around and changes its expression according to your reactions, creating interaction. Daniel wants to bridge the gap between man and machine through this process, which uses open source motion tracking and facial recognition software.

Think of it like those paintings where the eyes watch your every move and follow you. It’s like that, but better/creepier. You may very well have nightmares after you watch it watching you.

After seeing this, I really want to play some pinball. A game of pinball projected onto a large building, that is. I didn’t even know this was possible until now. The image and video you see here comes from Lyon, France during the Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) 2011, where they played pinball on the side of a building.

The game is called Urban Flipper and it was designed by Carol Martin and Thibaut Berbezier of CT Light. They can project the game onto any surface, in this case, the Celestins theater in Lyon. Using 3D projection mapping technology, they to turned the details of the building’s facade into bumpers and obstacles, and allowed visitors to actually play a game using a few buttons located near the projection booth. It even has the appropriate accompanying pinball sounds.

Let the giant pinball wars begin. He who controls the high score on the Empire State building is king.

If you’re ever on the other side of the room while you’ve got food cooking in the microwave, you know it can be difficult to see how things are doing in there. Here’s a quirky concept that’s designed to help with that relatively minor inconvenience.

Designers Hwang Jungjoon and Lee Jaeryong created the Proinjector, a combination microwave oven/projector which lets you see what’s going on inside your microwave from across the room.

They claim the design is specifically to reduce the exposure risks to microwave radiation for the elderly, pregnant women and young children, but I could see it being handy if you’re just too lazy to get up from the couch and check that your baked potato hasn’t exploded yet. That said, I think I’d rather just have a tiny wireless camera inside the microwave (or my regular oven for that matter), which just lets me check on things from my smartphone. I’m sure somebody out there is already working on that. If not, I claim that patent in the name of Technabob!

If nothing else, I like the cylindrical design of the Proinjector, which is definitely unique amongst microwave ovens, if not the most practical in terms of conserving counter space.

Using a variety of visual tricks, including projection mapping, props, and motion-tracking, Sony managed to create some of the most mind-blowing visual illusions I’ve ever seen on video, bringing to life a sort of virtual “holodeck” for us to feast our eyes on.

The series of three spots was produced on behalf of Sony Europe by Studio Output and Marshmallow Laser Feast to promote the immersiveness of movies rented or purchased from the PlayStation Store, and they definitely get the point across with these spectacular short clips. Incredibly, all three clips were shot in real-time, with zero edits or post-production. Everything you see was an optical effect seen through the lens of the camera. Michel Gondry would be proud. Watch, and see what I mean:

The scenes were created by projecting images onto various 3-dimensional surfaces, and then syncronized a variety of real-world props, booby traps, and triggers in the enviroment to move along with the scene changes. As you saw in the clips, live actors also helped move around various props and contrivances to help with the immersion. They shot the entire thing with a Steadicam, with several of PlayStation Move controllers strapped to it, as well as EyeToy cameras around the room in order automatically track motion and adjust the scene accordingly.

Now if only Sony could make a real holodeck, I’d buy one.

BenQ has offered up a palm size projector in the past that was decent enough, even if it wasn’t particularly bright. The company has announced a new palm-size projector pushing into the second generation called the Joybee GP2 Mini Projector. The little projector is small and lightweight making it easy to take on the road.

It weighs in at only 565g and has an integrated 4w power supply for operation. It even has an iPhone dock on top so you can give presentations using only your iPhone and no computer. It can also play music back through the internal speaker in standby mode. The little projector can throw a 160-inch image if the room is dark enough.

The light source is LED so you won’t need to worry about replacing expensive bulbs every few hundred hours. It will throw a 44-inch image from only 3.3 feet from the surface and it uses DLP technology for rich colors and good contrast. It supports full 720p HD resolution, has a 2400:1 contrast ratio and 200 ANSI lumens of brightness. At double the brightness of the GP1, it sounds much better than the original projector. BenQ crams 2GB of memory inside so you can even store files directly to the projector if wanted. It also has a HDMI output and a memory card slot.

The GP2 also offers an optional battery pack which snaps onto the bottom of the projector, offering up to 3 hours of projection on a charge (although brightness decreases to 100 lumens on battery power.) The Joybee GP2 is available now, and retails for $699 (USD) – but Amazon already has it listed for just $549.

It’s not as high tech as the OmniTouch or the Sixthsense, but the Monolith case for the iPhone 4 is still innovative. Not only does it protect your phone, it also acts as an external battery pack and has a built-in projector. It can supersize the screen to up to 60″, although its maximum brightness is a paltry 12 lumens. Still, it could make playing games and watching videos on the iPhone 4 a lot easier.

The Monolith’s built-in 1900mAh battery can power the projector for up to 3 hours. Alternatively it can recharge the iPhone 4 up to 1.5 times its battery charge. Either way, you can use the projector without fear that you’ll drain your iPhone’s already precious juice. On the flip-side, this seems to imply that we shouldn’t expect smartphones to have built-in projectors anytime soon. Not if we want them to remain slim anyway.

Here’s a demo of the Monolith in action. Though you might want to turn the volume down or even mute the video altogether.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I’m not sure if it’s just the video or if the projector’s quality just isn’t that good. It seems bright enough to be usable though. Unfortunately none of these pros and cons matter unless you live in Japan, where it’s being sold exclusively by Sirobako for ¥19,800 (~$260 USD). If someone can hack it and add a camera to detect input, voila – super-sized touchscreen.

Great minds do think alike. I’m sure some of you still remember the Sixthsense wearable computer by Patti Maes and Pranav Mistry. Here’s an very similar concept device that uses different hardware to arrive at the same functionality. Developed by Chris Harrison, the OmniTouch uses a Kinect in combination with a tiny projector, letting you use your body – or pretty much anything really – as a touchscreen.

Whereas the Sixthsense requires that the user wear color-markers on his fingers so that the camera can track them, the Kinect does all the work in Harrison’s concept device. The OmniTouch is also slightly more compact than the Sixthsense. It’s also shoulder-mounted, making you look like a robot pirate. Or a bird trainer.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I wonder if this will be the next big thing in portable computing immediately after tablets. Both the Sixthsense and OmniTouch are great concepts – they encourage people to go out and interact with the world instead of mooring us on our chairs or beds. We’ll be able to hold our own drive-in and outdoor theaters, augment analog games with digital enhancements and access information about anything we encounter – animals, plants, gadgets, food, landmarks. And we’ll be able to publicly bitch about how this magical device has a short battery life and that the screen isn’t too bright or some other thing that doesn’t please us. Instead of graffiti, memes, Twitter feeds and Facebook wall posts will be projected on walls. Wow. I just made myself sad.

If you have an iPhone or other iOS device, you have probably wanted on more than on occasion to shoot some of the content you have on that smartphone onto a much larger screen. You can put the content onto the TV in your home with an AV cable or a speaker dock, but it you want a really big image, a projector is what you need.

Epson unveiled two low-end new projectors today – the MegaPlex MG-850HD and the MG-50 each offer an integrated iPhone and iPad dock on the back. Both of the new projectors share very similar features. The only real difference is that the MG-850HD has 720p resolution and the MG-50 only offers 540p. Both of the projectors are bright, with the 850HD offering 2,800 lumens of brightness and the MG-50 with 2,200 lumens, projecting a 100-inch image without a problem. Both of the new projectors use 3-chip LCD technology, dual 10W speaker and have HDMI and VGA ports in addition to handling video direct from docked iOS devices.

The MG-850HD will sell for $799 (USD) and the MG-50 will sell for $699 starting later this month.

Fireworks projectors are nothing new, although I must admit I didn’t know they existed until today. But while the projector that made its rounds on the Internet a couple of years ago was meant to be enjoyed indoors while stationary, this projector only measures 10″ x 6″x 3.5″ and only weighs 1lb. – small and light enough that even a 6-year old child can wield it. And since it doesn’t actually launch fireworks, you can rest easy knowing that your kid won’t set your house on fire. He might bash your face with it though, so don’t rest too easy.

The projector is operated like a toy gun – cock the bar at the bottom to launch a virtual mortar, after which you’ll hear a thump and then a whistling sound effect. This is when the projector does something no real world fireworks can – you decide when to make the mortar burst into a cacophony of light and sound by pressing the trigger on the handle. Fancy eh? It is a kid’s toy though, so don’t expect anything too fancy. For example, it only has 8 fireworks images, which can be browsed by rotating the projector’s barrel. The images are backlit by an LED and are best projected about 5 feet away from a wall or ceiling in a darkened room. I believe this is what a sample output looks like:

Clearly not photorealistic, but it doesn’t look too bad. I wish there was a video demo though. You can buy the Handheld Fireworks Light Show Projector at Hammacher Schlemmer for $40 (USD). Requires three AA batteries, not included. Occasion not required to operate.

The Space Invaders Silk Ties are made by UK neckwear makers Projector and they come in a variety of different colors, infusing a bit of style into any geek’s attire.

The ties feature a simple pixel print down the middle, inspired by the Space Invaders video game (though they’re clearly not exact replicas of the original aliens.)

They are made out of 100% silk and come in six different colors.

Not too long ago, I purchased a projector for my media room and I really wanted a 3D one. At the time, there were very few on the market and most of them only did 720p and 3D. I wanted 1080p since the difference between the two resolutions is obvious on a large screen. I ended up going with a 2D 1080p projector. CEDIA Expo is going on right now and there are a bunch of new projectors being unveiled there.

Among the new 3D offerings at the show is the impressively priced Vivitek H1086-3D. This projector will ship in December for $1,999 (USD) and will offer full 1080p resolution and supports 3D. The projector even turns 2D content into 3D automatically. It offers plenty of connectivity options as well including HDMI, VGA-In, S-Video, Composite, RS-232 and 12v trigger.

The 7.8 pound projector is a DLP unit with 2.35:1 widescreen and lots of features for the best image quality available. The projector also sports integrated 5W speakers. It has 2,000 lumens of brightness and a 5000:1 contrast ratio. That contrast ratio is pretty low by today’s standards, so I would definitely want to see the image quality before I plunked down almost $2,000 for this thing.

We may not have impossibly thin phones with holographic displays just yet, but we still live in pretty modern times. Just take a look at one of Nikon’s newest digital cameras, the Coolpix S1200pj. Aside from the usual picture- and video-taking features, the S1200pj also has a built-in LED projector. What’s more, the projector can be used to display not only the media stored in the camera itself but from Apple’s iOS devices as well.

This is actually Nikon’s third camera to have a built-in projector, but the difference with their latest effort is that the S1200pj uses DLP technology, giving it a brighter output while at the same time consuming less power. The projector has a 13mm/f2.1 lens with a 20 lumen light source composed of one red, one green and one blue LED. It can display images up to 60″ in size at distances of up to 10′.

As you might have expected, even with the improved technology the S1200pj’s projector is still power hungry. It will drain the camera’s Li-ion battery within an hour of use, so it’s not a permanent alternative to the built-in 3″ LCD screen. Here’s a commercial for the Coolpix S1200pj:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As you saw in the video, iOS devices connect to the S1200pj by way of a 30-pin connector to 3.5mm cable. Engadget says that Nikon will bundle the cable with the camera for at least the first three months after its release, so I guess late adopters will have to cough up extra to buy the cable separately. The camera’s other connectivity options are a digital A/V, VGA and USB port. The camera also has a slot for SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. Here’s Engadget’s hands-on with the camera:

The Nikon Coolpix S1200pj is available for pre-order on Amazon for $429 (USD). I only talked about the projector since it’s the defining feature of the S1200pj, but no one’s going to buy this for that feature alone. Check out Nikon’s website for the camera’s full specifications.

Men, here’s a quick tip: ask women any question, just don’t ask her what her weight is. (Unless, of course, you want to be bombarded with a hundred and one follow-up questions as to why you’re asking her and why you’re so mean and insensitive and if you think she’s fat and all that..)

However, if you want to be all sneaky about it (and if you happen to be the fearless type), then you might want to position this scale in a corner of the room or something where a woman’s bound to step on it. Wait and few seconds, and shazam! Her weight will be displayed in bright, bold red LED against the wall, visible for anyone in the vicinity to take a gander.

She won’t be too happy about it, that’s for sure, so try to lay low about the whole thing for the next couple of days.

About six months ago I installed a home theater in my game room upstairs. I used a big 120-inch screen and a projector. At first, I wanted a projector that could do 3D, but the choices were very limited and since I would be using it for 2D movies more than anything, I wanted 1080p resolution too and there were mostly only 720p 3D offerings at the time.

Panasonic has a new home theater projector that was just announced called the PT-AE7000U and the projector offers both 3D capability and a 1080p resolution. The projector uses special transparent LCDs at 480Hz and Panasonic overdrive Technology. It also offers their “Intelligent Lens Memory” system, which lets you store zoom and focus settings for different movie proportions.

The projector sports a contrast ratio of 300,000:1 and has 2,000 lumens of brightness. Panasonic uses a special 200W Red-Rich lamp and the LCD panels are tuned for better red luminance and brightness. The new projector will go on sale in Japan this September at a price of approximately $3,499 (USD).

With the gaggle of touchscreen-equipped buttonless gadgets coming out every second, I was mildly shocked at the sight of Aiptek’s MobileCinema D20. But don’t let it’s retro looks and form fool you, this boombox is one versatile fella, blasting both audio and video on the go.

Aside from the usual features and functions we’ve come to expect from music players, the Mobile Cinema D20 can also play DVDs and display video from its LCoS LED projector. The maximum projection size is 75″, but unfortunately it can’t do HD – max resolution is 640×480. Still, it’s a decent alternative if you’re in need of a display. It can also read both audio and video files from USB, SD and MMC storage media. Here’s a look at the projector in action, albeit in a well-lit room:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If Freeview TV (DVB-T) service is available in your area you’ll also be able to tune in to that on the D20. The video below has Spanish captions, but its a decent overview of the D20′s functions:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Here’s a look at the buttons (remember those?) and ports on the D20:

You can order the Aiptek Mobile Cinema D20 from Amazon UK for for about $360 (USD). It ain’t the prettiest gadget out there, but then again you won’t be staring at it when you’re watching videos or playing music.

I haven’t seen the use for a dedicated camcorder in a while, but this latest HD Handycam from Sony actually sports a built-in 60-inch projector into the back of its LCD, making it interesting for people wanting to share what they record immediately.

The Sony Handycam HDR-PJ50V isn’t the first camera to have a built-in projector, that was 2009′s Nikon Coolpix S1000PJ. In addition to capturing 1080p HD 60fps or 24fps video, it and it can shoot 7.1 MP still photos. Despite the resolution of the camera though, the LED-backed projector has a paltry 640×360 resolution, with just 10 lumens of brightness.

The Handycam also comes with a sizeable 220 GB hard drive, Sony G 30mm lens, a 12× optical /160× digital zoom, and Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound. Storage is expandable with memory sticks.

You can get the HDR-PJ50V camera now for just under $1000 (USD), so it doesn’t come cheap, but it does come with a lot of features.

I know that there are many business users that travel all around giving presentations for one thing or another. If you’re one of these people, or have sat through any of them you know that a projector is almost always required for a bunch of folks to see what you are showing at one time. The problem is toting that projector around with you through the airport and around the office can be a pain.

Fujitsu has unveiled two new notebook computers that both have the option of removing the optical drive and putting a little pico projector in its place. The tiny LED projector slides out of the optical drive bay and has a resolution of 800 x 600. I think most folks will be able to live without an optical drive, especially during business presentations.

The S761 is a 13.3″ screen notebook with 1366 x 768 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 160GB of storage and it can be fitted with a Celeron B810, Core i3-2310M or a Core i5-2520M. The smaller P771 has a 12.2-inch screen, and the other features are the same. Both models will hit Japan in mid-May, unfortunately with high prices to go with. The S761 will retail for ¥219,450 (appx. $2680 USD), and the P771 will go for ¥255,150 (appx. $3100).

This may well be the coolest Kinect hack I have seen yet, despite the fact that it serves no purpose. I can only imagine how awesome this would be as a Halloween decoration. The geeks behind this hack took a Kinect and a spherical display from Pufferfish and hacked them together.

The orb-shaped display has a big iris and retina on it and makes the rough display look like a giant eyeball sitting there on the podium. The Kinect sees when a person walks up and the eye pops up on the sphere and then follows the person as they walk around the room. You can see the setup in action below.

The guys from The Technology Studio have a quick description of how they made it work here, and you can even grab the code over at Github – assuming you have a Puffersphere to display it on. They also posted an awesome Eye of Sauron version of the demo too:

I am in the middle of putting together an epic home theater in my game room that I have finally wrestled from the control of the wife and kids. I am putting in a projector and a freakin’ 10-foot wide screen of glorious gaming goodness. Thankfully, the room is huge and I can get a giant image. If you want a projector, but have a smaller space the new InFocus IN146 might be perfect for you.

The little projector isn’t specifically made for home theater, but it is 3D capable, has 720p resolution, and HDMI input so it will do the deed. The best part about the IN146 is that it can throw a 60-inch image from only 2.5 feet from the wall.

I would think that would mean a massive 120-inch image would be possible from about twice that distance. The projectors native resolution is 1280 x 800 and it has a single HDMI input with dual VGA inputs. Brightness is 2700 lumens, so a room with windows should be no problem. Another nice feature is the price. The IN146 sells for just $825 (USD).

Hammacher Schlemmer is one of those sites that has some really cool gadgets and gizmos, but they are often crazy expensive. A new gadget has been added to the store that isn’t so expensive, cool called The Camcorder Projector. You should be able to figure out what it does just from the name.

The Camcorder Projector is actually the 3M Shoot ‘n Share CP40, a small handheld camcorder that records in 720p HD resolution. It can also shoot 8MP still images as well. If you want to share the video and images you took with the camcorder with a group, you can use the integrated projector. That projector will throw an image up to 65-inches wide on the wall or other surface.

The catch here is that the projector has only 12 lumens and projects at just a 640 x 480 resolution. You will get more lumens from the sun reflecting off my lily white arse. If you plan to see the video or images, you will need a very dark room. If you want to know how well it works before you buy one, CrunchGear reviewed one a little while back. You can order the camcorder up right now for $299.95 (USD).
