Psp 3000, Now Polished With a Plethora of Pleasing Lights

Some mods look deceptively simple, like this customized PSP 3000. Sure, you see a few lights, and if you check out the in-progress pictures, you can even see more of the upgrades and fitting progress. But the end result is a disco inferno of lights and sounds that you’d never expect from looking at this picture.

It’s colorful. It’s bright. It may also be a seizure-inducing weapon if wielded properly. Check out glitz around 1:14 to see what’s really up with this one, and then just let it play.

Modder Val claims this is the first PSP 3000 to get special treatment from him. I, at least, am hoping for more, as this is a really clean upgrade.

Poor PSP-3000. Within weeks it was served a double whammy. After a fairly long period of being homebrew-proof, it was finally hacked. And then shortly afterwards it became (sorta) obsolete. Give your PSP some retail therapy and get one of these custom faceplates from console makeover masters XCM.

Psp-3000 Hacked: One Small Step for Hackers, One Giant Step for Homebrew

And so it has come to pass: a group of developers calling themselves Team Typhoon recently achieved a breakthrough in hacking the PSP-3000 via member Davee’s ChickHEN Homebrew Enabler. As proof, a Team Typhoon member posted a video of ChickHEN at work on YouTube, adding, “This proves that the code survives a reboot and the system software and MAC address can be changed.”

However, the exploit is still in development and has limited functionality. Unlike the hacks for the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000, the HEN TIFF exploit does not allow installation of custom firmware, won’t allow a PSP-3000 to play backups of PSP or PSX games (such as those in .ISO and .CSO formats), load plugins or “touch the flash” of a PSP. That last one sounded a bit dirty. Anyway, Here’s the video of a PSP with 5.03 firmware booting on the HEN environment:

While the HEN exploit still has no PSP/PSX backup support, it can be used to run emulators – such as the GBA emulator gPSP, pictured below – as well as other homebrew games and programs, such as the well-known PSPTube.

You can also download the hack on his website, but make sure that a.) you’re running firmware version 5.03 and b.) you absolutely know what you’re doing, because if you break your PSP you only have yourself to blame. Hackers don’t offer no warranty; they break ‘em.

Psp Goes Vibrant With Carnival Colors

If the current PSPs are just way too dull for your tastes, take heart–brighter, more colorful versions are on the way… in Japan. That means ponying up the import tax if you want one of these, and trust me… if you like pretty gadgets, you’re probably going to want one, if only idly and for a moment.

The new shades are known as Carnival Colors: Vibrant Blue, Radiant Red, Bright Yellow and Spirited Green. I don’t know how just how spirited that green is (does it let out a cheer when you play well?), but the yellow is aptly named.

The new colors are part of the PSP-3000 line, which has thus far been limited to black, white, and silver. The Carnival Colors will be available in March for 19,800 yen (or about $220 USD), or you can shell out a little extra for a matching accessories pack, which includes a case, Memory Stick, and more for 24,800 yen.
