We live in a world that continuously strives for order and arrangement. We found some elements and decided to arrange them according to their properties in the table of elements. We discovered numbers and put them in increasing order from 1 to a billion of a zillion.

So you might wonder where this totally random bookcase would find its place in this same ordered world. An ordered kind of random, that is.

How about my study? I don’t know about you, but the first thing I thought when I saw this was, “Wow, this a pretty hot mess.” And I mean that in every literal sense of the word.

The Random Bookcase is made from MD wood fiberboards and painted in matte white. I love how ordered and disorganized the whole thing looks at the same time. In my book, “random” usually translates to “messy” and “disheveled,” but this bookcase totally goes against the definition of the word.

Go wild, live a little, and be more random. You can start with your bookcase. These bookshelves are available from Made In Design and carry a hefty price tag of £1,629.00 (~$2,650 USD.)

Let Your Baby Do the Name Picking via Kicking with This iPhone App

So what will people come up with next?

I personally don’t really hate or like the name that my parents bestowed upon me. I find “Hazel” to be a pretty boring name to be stuck with (given that the meaning of the name is simply from “the hazel tree.” Who wants to be named after a tree? I don’t.) but I’m also glad that I didn’t get stuck with something that was incredibly hideous, like Kernnifer or Anntena (no offense to people who are actually named these names, I got the names from this list over here.)

But what if there were some way that you could let your unborn baby do the name picking?

Yes, folks, that’s right. Your soon-to-come bundle of joy can pick his or her own name simply with the kicks he or she is throwing. How? With the Kick To Pick app for your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The concept is simple. The app actually comes loaded with tens of thousands of names that you can browse through to select which ones are your favorites. You can forgo making the favorites list and just go straight ahead to the picking by powering up the app and placing it on top of your baby bump. The app then goes through the list systematically until little Junior or little Missy throws a kick that will be detected by the accelerometer of your device. And voila: the name for your baby has been chosen.

This way, you can just tell Vevia, Frauke, or Stacian (still names from the list I mentioned earlier, if you’re wondering) that they were the ones who chose their names for themselves when they complain about it later on.

You can get the Kick To Pick app from the iTunes App Store for $0.99.

Ever felt the need to leave a television on to make it look like somebody is home while you’re out of town? This quirky little invention does just one thing – simulate the effect of having left your TV turned on.

The $49 FakeTV uses an array of colored, flashing LEDs to create the illusion of the stroboscopic effect of a television. The compact box uses only a fraction of the electricity of a real TV, and doesn’t put unnecessary wear and tear on your precious plasma or flat panel.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

According to its creator “FakeTV uses a built-in computer to control super-bright LEDs to produce light of varying intensity and color that light up a room just like a real television does. The light effects of real television programming — scene changes, camera pans, fades, flicks, swells, on-screen motion, and more, are all faithfully simulated by FakeTV… fills a room with color changes, both subtle and dramatic, in thousands of possible shades. FakeTV is completely unpredictable, and it never repeats.”

The FakeTV can be programmed to automatically activate at dusk, then stay on for up to seven hours. You can also connect it to an external outlet timer to turn it on and off. For more information, check out the FakeTV website.

Creative today announced their latest MP3 player, the ZEN Stone. Aimed squarely between the eyes of Apple’s iPod Shuffle, the Stone is a small, flash-based player designed for the low-end of the market.

The 1GB Zen Stone will retail for the amazingly low price of just $39.99 (roughly half the price of the equivalent iPod.) Capacity is enough to store up to 250 songs. Like the iPod Shuffle, there’s no display, so you have two simple choices: “play” or “random.” It can play tracks in MP3, WMA and WAV formats and its rechargeable battery provides to up to 10 hours of tunes on a single charge.

The player will be available in six colors: black, white, blue, red, green and pink, as well as optional skins for further embellishment. A variety of Stone accessories will also be available, including an armband, a keychain holder, and a docking amplified speaker. The Zen Stone should start shipping on May 14.
