While I can’t say for sure that I will never use portable speakers on my laptop or tablets, I probably won’t since I prefer using hi-fi headphones instead. But if you prefer to share your sound on the go, these portable speakers from Scosche have an interesting design and look pretty unique.

They’re called the boomCAN speakers, and while it’s slightly annoying to type the name, if you’re looking for something to power your smartphone, mp3 player, tablet, netbook, or laptop on the go, then these might be what you need. They come with USB rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which should provide up to 7 hours of continuous playback.

The cylindrical speakers themselves feature 40mm drivers and measure 2.5″ in height, 2″ in width, and look pretty portable. Scosche sells them for $24.99 each, so for two, you’ll spend about $50.

While I don’t know how good the sound is from this little card-case speaker from Japan is, it certainly looks nice. You’ll be able to carry around a speaker in your pocket. Since they look pretty trendy, you can imagine that you’ll end up paying a premium for it, though.

The pocket-size speaker has a built-in rechargeable battery which takes 2 hours to charge up via USB cable, and it will last you 5 hours of playing time. It comes in three color variations: silver, gold, and black. It looks extremely simple, yet well put together.

You can get this portable speaker for around $65 (USD). Since they’re a Japanese import, it’s not too easy to find them, but you can head over here for a few different shops that stock these. Whether or not they’ll ship to the US is another problem.

If you have a bunch of gadgets and gear around your house that uses AA batteries like cameras, video cameras, or RC toys you definitely need some rechargeable batteries. Sanyo makes a line of rechargeable batteries called the Eneloop that have a lot of storage and can be recharged a bunch of times.

Sanyo has announced a couple of new battery models that are designed specifically for electronics and toys. The Eneloop Pro batteries are for high drain electronics like cameras and flashlights among other things. The Pro version of the batteries have a 25% higher charge capacity than other Eneloop batteries meaning they will let you use your gadget longer. Plus, they’re supposed to retain up to 75% of their charging capacity after a year of sitting unused.

The Eneloop Plus battery line is made specifically for toys and has a special overheat prevention function that will help prevent the risk of fire from a battery that gets too hot. Both batteries will only come in AA size. The Pro line will come on July 21 with the Plus version coming on December 1. The Pro version will sell for 1260 yen (~$16 USD) for a pair, but pricing on the other line and the associated chargers are unavailable at this time.

There’s no denying that the world we live in right now thrives on a culture of excesses. The way manufacturers and companies are churning out products every few months or so is a testament to that.

I have a friend who’s absolutely obsessed with following the latest trends and getting new releases of gadgets she already owns the moment they come out. She buys the new model when it comes out, uses it for a few months or so, then either sells, gives, or stows away the old model when a newer one comes out.

It’s a vicious cycle and it’s wasteful. Designers Da Deng, Chandra Baker, Chris Platt, and Jason Schuler probably understand and know a thing or two about these people when they came up with revOlve.

Their concept design for an all-new breed of mobile phones, revOlve, bagged first place at the 2010 International E-Waste Competition in the Designer Category, and it’s easy to see why.

revOlve wants to “break the cycle” of serial cellphone replacers by handing them a phone that is simply too genius to trade in for another one. Full specifications are unavailable of course, since this is really just a design, but it’s one that I’d love to see turned into reality.

revOlve can be easily disassembled, so each component can be upgraded, replaced, and recycled when necessary. The bottom part of the phone where you can see the loop (which is also convenient for hanging the phone on a keychain or belt or something) is equipped with an induction generator. So when you’re running low of juice, just give the revOlve a few (or a lot) of spins to re-charge the battery.

We’ve featured flashlights that are incredibly small and light, and flashlights that are designed to last at least forever. Now here’s a flashlight that goes over the top where it matters most: shining a light. Actually I don’t think “shining” can do justice to the Olight SR90 Intimidator, not when its maximum output is 2200 lumens – way brighter than a car’s headlights. It’s a freakin’ optic blast. It’s a flashheavy.

The light from the SR90 isn’t just strong, it has a phenomenal reach as well – 1000m, or about 0.6 miles. What. The flashlight can shine in full power for as long as 80 minutes before its battery runs out, but if you use it in Low Mode – a “mere” 700 lumens – then it can last up to 9 hours. And in case you need to attract attention or induce mass epileptic seizures, the SR90 has a Strobe Mode, where it will flicker on and off using the full 2200 lumens for up to 150 mins. straight. There are battery indicators at the bottom of the SR90 so you know how much longer you can fend off the darkness.

Its phenomenal lighting powers comes at a price though, and I’m not just talking about how much it costs. The SR90 is 13.23 in long and weighs almost 3.5 lbs. And yes, it’s expensive. As of this writing Battery Junction is selling SR90s for $450 (USD), and that’s already discounted by $100. This is definitely not for mere blackouts.

Check out the video below to see the Intimidator being put through its paces by a guy who’s totally dressed for the occasion:

Remember the remote control + pager hack we shared with you a few months ago? Well, one of the big guys finally had the exact same idea. Motorola has made a remote control and dock combo, with the latter having a Find Key – the big white button in the picture below. When the Find Key is pressed, the remote will emit a sound and flash its lights so you can easily locate it. If you also manage to lose the dock, then you’re screwed.

The dock also serves as the remote’s charger and as you can see, it also has a digital clock. The dock can get its power from an outlet or via USB.

I’m not sure if the Motorola R331 Easy Find remote control is already on sale though. Check out Motorola’s website for more info.

Unveiled at CES 2010, mPower Technologies‘ Emergency Illuminator is a powerhouse of a flashlight. It contains two rechargeable and replaceable CR123 batteries for normal use. But it also has a reserve battery, which can hold its full capacity for up to 20 years.

The Emergency Illuminator’s LED blasts out 180 lumens of light. The primary batteries can power the flashlight for “hours”, while the reserve has enough juice for two hours of high-intensity light. To use the reserve battery, “simply twist the cap until you hear a snap. That breaks the internal barrier, enabling liquid electrolyte to come into contact with the solid electrodes, activating the battery.”

To fully cement its claim as a device that “provides power when and where you need it”, the Emergency Illuminator (that’s a damn good euphemism for a flashlight) has a USB port, so you can siphon its power to your other gadgets. Obviously if you don’t have the necessary cable with you this feature will be useless.

If its looks and features have not given you an idea of its price, this will: the flashlight’s case was designed by Porsche Design Studio. Actual cost? $290 (USD).

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The flashlight will pop up in online stores this month, but if you want your own Emergency Illuminator ASAP you can contact mPower (the store is a lie, click the Amazon link and you’ll be taken to mPower’s contact/pre-order page) to pre-order the device. I think Alan Wake just pre-ordered fifty of these.

I don’t know if this is that revolutionary, but for a moment I was impressed with the fact that this battery-powered ferry can travel about 80 km with 800 passengers on board.

IHI Marine United is the maker of this plug-in ship that is powered by lithium-ion batteries. This ship is called the Zero Emission Electric Propulsion Ship. I’m not surprised that it’s Japanese with a name like that.

The ship can recharge its batteries at the ports it visits. The design prototype will be 100 feet long and will carry 800 people, and the amount of electricity needed to power it is 200 to 300 times more than what’s needed for an electric car.

80 km, that’s about 50 miles, which isn’t that long, but it makes sense for a ferry that makes frequent, short trips to be powered by electricity. The company hopes to develop a commercial vessel by 2015.

Minor modifications aside, today’s Rubik’s Cube is very similar to the one that Ernő Rubik introduced to the world more than 30 years ago. But it was only a matter of time before the geeky puzzle cube got touched by technology. That sounded dirty. But you get it, right? Touchscreen Rubik’s Cube. Stupid pun. So yeah, the cube has gone high-tech, eliminating the clickity-clackety action of the analog version in favor of swipety… swapety? Instead of having moving parts, the touchscreen Rubik’s Cube has an accelerometer that detects swipes to rotate the colored lights.

The cube also has some built-in memory so even if it runs out of charge while you’re in the middle of solving, you can still pick up where you left off after you recharge the cube. The charge time-to-battery-life ratio is quite atrocious though, 8 hours to charge for 1 hour of play. That’s downright puzzling. I know that if you’re good at it you can solve the puzzle 125 times before it runs out of charge, but still.

Plus it’s freakin’ expensive: Hammacher Schlemmer is asking $150 (USD) for a touchscreen Rubik’s Cube. Well actually the price might be justified, considering that the cube is intelligent: it can offer hints and can even solve itself if you want. Yes sir, I said IT CAN SOLVE ITSELF. Whether that’s an awesome idea or a redundant feature is up to you. I vote redundant.

I sure as hell won’t find any use for this but maybe you would: The Printstik PS910 ME from PLANon is an ultra-compact (1″ x 10.75″ x 1.5″) rechargeable printer that can sync with your computer or smartphone via USB or Bluetooth, allowing you to print anything – emails, web pages, documents, boarding passes – on the go.

I think it’s more of an emergency solution rather than something you should rely on on a regular basis. For one, the Printstik uses thermal paper so you won’t be able to print colored material. But more importantly, it has a slow-ass printing speed – the Printstik PS910 ME can only print up to three pages per minute.

But if the printer’s USB and Bluetooth connectivity are solid and easy to use, then it’s going to appeal to a lot of businessmen, scientists or researchers who frequently find themselves in unfamiliar – or uninhabited – places. Here’s the Printstik PS910 ME in action at the recently concluded IFA consumer electronics exhibit in Berlin:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Prinstik PS910 ME sells for $170 (USD) at Amazon. A roll of thermal paper good for up to 20 pages is included with every purchase; additional rolls cost $18.50 for a pack of 3.

Currently, the only USBCell available is the AA size, but Moixa also plans to sell AAA, 9-volt, and phone/PDA battery versions in the near future.

Battery life is always an issue with portable gaming systems, especially with the PSP’s power-sucking UMD drive. You can always buy a second battery, but what if you also own a DS? Well if you own both then I guess you have enough money to buy a second battery for that one too.

But if you’re looking for a cheap alternative, then you might want to check out one of Deal Extreme’s latest offerings: a portable rechargeable power pack that can be used to charge both the PSP and the DS as well as GameBoy Advance SPs, for the low low price of $12.19 USD. However, if you only own a Nintendo system then you can’t use this power pack, because it can only be recharged using the PSP’s charger.

The portable power pack certainly passes Deal Extreme’s strict screening policy, a policy which takes into account two very important factors in determining whether or not to sell something on their website: 1. Is it cheap? 2. Does it have Engrish? Also, the power pack’s real capacity is 2400mAh, and Deal Extreme knows that, but they still included “18000mAh” in the title of the power pack’s product page. Why? I guess if you’re paying $12.19 for a multi-system battery, such concerns are invalid.

Okay I admit, the text on the back of the power pack’s packaging isn’t that bad. In fact, it’s concerned about the customer’s well-being, advising its user, “Do not be short circuit”. Awwww, thanks power pack!

Ever find yourself out and about when your cell phone runs out of juice? Did you know you can recharge your portable gadgets anywhere, even when there’s no available power source?

Just plug your gadgets into this handy hand crank charger and get to cranking. The SUPERBattery from Datexx lets you juice up your electronic gadgets anywhere, anytime by harnessing the power of your arm strength.

In emergency hand crank mode, the SUPERBattery should give you about 2 minutes of talk time on your phone for every 6 minutes of cranking. My arm is getting tired just thinking about it, but it is probably a good idea to keep something like this in your emergency kit if you go camping or even in the back of your car – just in case you run yourself off the road this Winter. As an added bonus, the SUPERBattery includes a built-in flashlight, just in case you’re stuck in the dark.

Of course if you’re not in an crisis situation, can pre-charge the SUPERBattery with the included AC adapter, giving your devices up to 4 hours of juice on a single charge. The kit includes a hand-cranked 600mA rechargeable battery pack, and adapters for over 1,200 different mobile devices including media players, cell phones and handheld video games.

You can find these over at Compact-Impact for just under $30 USD.

This funky modern watch out of Japan tells time not with hands or numbers, but with a tiny little electrocardiogram machine that sits on your wrist.

OK, the EIN Cyber Heartbeat LED watch doesn’t actually tell you if your heart is still beating, but its LED graphical display is styled to look like a mini heart monitor. From the looks of these display instructions, though, don’t ask me to tell you what time it is. I’ve got a better chance of telling you if you’re in sinus rhythm or VTAC. Push an amp of epi now! (Yeah, I watch ER, what of it?)

Unlike other LED watches which usually remain pitch black until a button is pressed, the display on the Heartbeat can be left on all the time if you so choose. That’s because the watch provides its own built in resuscitation capability. Just plug the watch into your computer’s USB port, and the Heartbeat will recharge in an hour or two. A single charge should give you about 24 hours of constant illumination. Of course, if you prefer to only see the time on-demand, you’ll get several months on a single charge.

The Heartbeat is available in both black and brushed stainless versions, with a choice of either a green or red LED display.

So far, I haven’t found a retailer for the Heartbeat outside of Japan, but if you’re willing to brush up on your little Katakana, you can find them at Seahope for ¥25,200 (appx. $290 USD).

Here’s an innovative way to shed some light on your drab old living quarters.

Product designer Maarten DeCeulaer’s Nomad Light Molecules can be interconnected to create completely new organic shapes on demand.

Each individual sphere of light can operate independently for up to 4 hours on a single charge.

But as each light fades from white to red, it means that it’s hungry for a recharge. To juice it back up, simply connect the separated orb back to its central molecular mothership, and it’ll light up and start charging again.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

At this point Maarten says the Nomad is still “under development”, which means it could be a while before you can buy one of these for yourself. In the mean time, I suppose you could tape a bunch of LED juggling balls together for a similar effect.

I recently reported on Joytech’s rechargeable controller dock for the Wii. Now, Nyko is getting into the game with charging cradles for both the Wii and the Playstation 3′s SIXAXIS controllers.

Filling a void in both Nintendo’s and Sony’s product lines, the docks allow you to neatly recharge your controllers without unsightly cables running between the controllers and the consoles. Since the PS3′s controllers are already rechargeable, all you need to do is drop the controllers into Charge Base PS3 and go. The PS3 version can hold and charge up to 4 controllers at once. The Wii version holds two controllers and includes two NiMH rechargeable battery packs that also have a nice rubberized backing, presumable to improve your grip on the Wii-mote.

Pricing and release dates are still forthcoming.
