A Grandfather’s Gaming Adventures

Gamers, here’s an awesome way to jump start your Monday (or end it, in my case). Amidst all the hype, reports of shortcomings and scams and overreacting complaints about video games that we come across on the Web nowadays, it’s nice to see something that reminds us of the things that make gaming fun: the sense of adventure, exploration and challenge. Redditor jungleradio says that his grandfather asked for video games for his 80th birthday earlier this year. He then received this email from his grandpa last week:

I have the exact experience with Red Dead Redemption. I’m sure many of you can relate to Grandpa Aaron as well. I haven’t finished Bioshock (and I never will, because I get dizzy when I play FPS games) but I’m still moved by how much the experience moved the man. But most of all, I just love how everything seemed so fresh to him and that he wasn’t upset about struggling with the games. Makes me ashamed a bit because I’ve gotten a bit jaded and am easily frustrated with games. Grandpa Aaron approaches games at just the right distance. Engaged, but not too serious about it.

Is Reddit Bigger Than Digg? [Infographic]

There’s a reason why I’ve always liked Reddit better than Digg. Maybe it had to do with how cheeky they are, maybe it’s got to do with the fact that I strongly disliked the whole Digg Mafia thing. After the whole Digg Revolt, it’s now time for Reddit to provide evidence that it is actually bigger social news site – at least in terms of pageviews.

Digg’s Kevin Rose revealed Digg’s numbers from July, and it seems that Reddit beat those by almost 40%! Incredibly, Reddit has 1/20th of the staff that Digg has. Of course, neither party is sharing unique visitor numbers, so those could tell a different story.

Either way, I’m actually pretty happy to see this. Digg isn’t as relevant as it once was, especially with their latest overhaul of their website.

Portal Bookends Are Not Lies

This wonderfully apt creation was made by redditor TriangleMen’s friend using “a CnC table and spare time/metal.” The picture below would have been more awesome if they placed the bookends and books on the opposite sides of a wall.

To TriangleMen’s friend: Etsy, dude, Etsy. Make a couple (hundred) more and you’ll probably get enough funds for the holiday video game onslaught.

The Digg Revolt: Users Want Reddit to Take Over?

Last week, the popular social news site Digg overhauled its website, turning it into a hybrid social bookmarking/social networking site. It hasn’t been an easy transition. Many users despise the new look and have taken it to new lengths to protest. And it’s not just about the looks. It’s a true Digg Revolt! Check out this great timeline.

The revolters have even go so far as flooding Digg with Reddit links to drive traffic away from Digg. Why? Apparently, the way that the new Digg works allows major news sites and publishers to dominate the front page. Now that the power has shifted away from a small group of powerful contributors, many diehard users have started to abandon Digg for Reddit.

The Reddit/Digg spam links were in full force on Monday, but have quieted down since then. From what Digg says, it’s impossible for them to revert to a previous version, so I think we’ll be stuck with the new Digg for a while. To be honest, I’ve always like Reddit more than Digg anyhow. What do you guys think of the new Digg?

Digg Vs Reddit: Who Will be Victorious?

Rate Rush put together this handy chart comparing Reddit and Digg. Between the two, who would win in a fight? I no longer use either on a regular basis, but some people swear by these social news sites.

Half of the links on Reddit go to Imgur, a photo-sharing site created by a Redditor. Digg’s top destination is YouTube. A quarter of the top links on Reddit point to Reddit itself. This means that Reddit users are creating self-referential posts. Digg is focused more on traditional news sites, like the Huff Post and the UK Guardian.

I stopped using Reddit a few years ago. But, I always preferred Reddit over Digg. Whichever site you choose, these social bookmarking sites can be controversial, since a tiny percentage of users seem to create and promote most of the content. Digg and Reddit have tried to makes things more balanced over the years, but the jury is still out on who will be victorious.

Reddit Brings Bacon Scent to Your Shower

Don’t fret if that title doesn’t make any sense. This bacon-scented soap celebrating reddit’s admittedly adorable mascot doesn’t make any sense, either, except that, well, the alien is cute, and bacon is delicious. But with those truisms out of the way, there’s no explaining the bacon reddit soap. There is only awe sprinkled with shock.

The soap, shown here next to lesser, non-bacony soap for size comparison, is also available in a fruitier version for those of you who don’t want to step out of the shower smelling like bacon. For $9, you can get a 10 ounce bar of orange- or bacon-scented glycerin soap, and a fresh (sort of) scent that will stick to you all day.

Bacon soap will either bring people closer or drive them away, and I’m not really sure which one is better.

It’s hard to hang out on these wide internets without appreciating kitschy ‘net-related gear, so of course this RSS pillow caught my eye. It looks nice and soft, and that icon is so homey and familiar that I almost wish I didn’t have a red sofa that would clash with this thing in an eye-shattering sort of way.

And look! You can even scrounge up RSS coasters if you want to do a whole decorative theme!

But we’re talking about pillows here, and at Craftsquatch’s Etsy store, you can get a whole passel of geeky pillows, from designs similar to the Adobe CS icon pillows featured here before to–look! It’s the adorable little Reddit alien.

The pillows may vary in price and design, but they’re all equally adorable.
