Digital cameras are a commodity now and just about everyone has one. The smartphone is replacing Some digital cameras but there are still a lot of folks that want a smartphone with a good camera and a camera as well. Some folks are even looking to novelty digital cameras since the gadgets are so common today.

The Rolleiflex MiniDigi AF 5.0 is one of the cameras that to me is a novelty item. It looks like an old-fashioned film camera on the outside. You might recognize this camera, we talked about the 3.1MP version way back in 2007. The new version of the camera has a 5MP resolution.

You will look down at the top of the camera to see the LCD just like the photographers in the 20′s would have done to see the image the viewfinder was lining up. The little LCD is a 1.1-inch square. To take each shot the user has to turn the hand crank on The side and photos are in a square format. The camera is offered on Amazon in either black or red for $270.

3D is all fine and good in my book, but I, like many of you, won’t get into 3D in my home until I can watch without those stupid glasses. I like the idea of being able to take 3D video and 3D pictures too, but again I don’t want to break out my wallet until no glasses are needed and I can actually view the pics off the computer or camera.

German camera company Rollei has unveiled a new digital camera that can take 2D and 3D photos as well as record video. The camera is called the PowerFlex 3D. It uses dual 5MP image sensors that shoot slightly different images at the same time to create 3D effects. You can see the 3D photos on the camera’s 2.8-inch screen without having to wear glasses. The camera can also record 720p HD video in 2D, but so can your iPhone 4.

To be able to see those photos off the camera, Rollei [DE] also introduced a 7-inch digital photo frame. According to the Spec sheet (in German), the frame offers “3D – ohne spezialbrille” – which translates to “3D – without special glasses.”.

The frame also comes with software to make 2D photos look 3D and has an internal battery for 3 hours of viewing away from an outlet. The frame will sell for a rather pricey €300 (appx. $392 USD) when it launches in January in Europe. Pricing for the camera is unknown.

Rollei has been making cameras for almost 90 years. Now you can own one of their classic models from the 1920′s, updated with some 21st century technology under the hood.

The Rolleiflex MiniDigi looks virtually identical to Rollei’s original Twin Lens Reflex cameras, with a decidedly modern spin. As its name indicates, the MiniDigi isn’t quite as bulky as its larger film ancestors. Instead of snapping your shots to film, the Mini records 3.1-megapixel digital images (hopefully, they’ll upgrade this to a higher resolution in future.)

Like the cameras that inspired it, the Mini uses a top-down viewfinder. It’s even got a “crank” on the side that advances the camera to the next picture. The camera can also capture video clips and offers expandable memory via an SD slot.

If you’re shopping for one of these, be sure that you order the new 3.1-megapixel version, since there was a 2-megapixel version out there for a while too. I found the newer model over at WolfCamera for $199.
