The carpet incorporates actual smooth stone pebbles sewn in between two layers of synthetic fabric, so it feels soft yet hard at the same time. It might not be the best carpet for accident-prone people or for those who are into rich and lush carpets, but it does have that added therapeutic factor.

And there’s also some pretty cool concepts and designs for floor mats-slash-beds like the Hilly.

The Hilly was designed by Elise Fouin for flooring company Tarkett. It sort of reminds me of the Land Peel, which was a floormat with pre-cut furniture that you could fold up when you needed it. You can’t fold stuff up to eventually sit on, but what you can do is inflate it (yes, you read that right, inflate!) to give rise to five little hills.

Or you could just, you know, enjoy the Hilly in its un-inflated form: flat and cushy-feeling, I presume. The Hilly is comprised of nine layers of vinyl flooring material, with a balloon system embedded inside it for the hills to come alive when air is pumped into it.

Well, that’s exactly what Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing did. He’s been working on tobacco-related art projects for the past decade, and this cigarette tiger skin rug is the third in his series of three works of art called the Tobacco Project.

It looks like a fluffy rug you might find in some rich person’s mansion, but I doubt that this will be able to provide you with much comfort. Cigarettes aren’t exactly the most comfortable material there is to rest on.

This 440-pound rug is currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts until December 4, 2011. It will then be moved to the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut in January next year.

For his Anrealage fashion line, Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga took inspiration from the squared-off pixel block to create his F/W 2011 collection, which includes shoes with pixel heels, pixelated prints on on jackets, sweaters and slacks.

But my favorite part of the collection isn’t the clothing. It’s the pixel furniture, which includes a pair of awesome blocky armchairs, a matching café table, a pixel-patterned Oriental rug, and some awesome pixel light bulb fixtures.

I would live in a house filled with this stuff if I could. But I can’t. So for now, the only way to experience this is to head to the Anrealage showroom in Harajuku, Tokyo.

The rug in the photo you see above is actually four Google Maps prints arranged to meet up perfectly. At first glance, it looks like a strange carpet until you realize that you are seeing houses, stores, and streets, not just lines and random shapes. The idea behind the art project was to take the art of tapestry and bring a modern twist to it by using Google Maps as the design.

The idea is interesting. I could see these making for an interesting conversation piece in a home. It would also be cool to see the idea used in business to show the view of a location from the sky. While you can buy these rugs, I wonder if you can actually commission these carpets with your area as the print.

It may be a few months late, but ThinkGeek has now announced that the sweet Wampa rug is now shipping for $99.99 (USD). I bet this will sell out quickly, so you had better order one now. The rug measures 62″ long and 30″ wide so it is sized well for making your prisoner bikini clad Leia fantasy come true with your best girl.

The claws of the rug are vinyl, the head is plush, and the fur is a soft synthetic material. ThnkGeek says the thing is even a licensed Lucasfilm collectable and has non-slip backing. I would like to see a version missing an arm so I can pretend I killed it escaping from an ice cave.

If you don’t remember the Wampa, he’s that menacing, abominable, 8-foot tall, white inhabitant of Hoth who put a serious beatdown on Luke Skywalker before he managed to cut off its arm. But you guys are probably too busy staring at Slave Leia and not the fuzzy, bear-like rug she’s lying on top of. Stop it. Focus on the bearskin and not the bare skin. The Wampa rug is cool, and deserves to be on your floor, even if Leia doesn’t come with it.

Created by WTCrafts, the NES controller rug is great for getting those cold feet warmed up in a hurry. The rug measures in at 33″ (w) x 16.5″ (h), and is made from soft yarn and has a fleece border. It sells for $49.99 (USD), and is available over at WTCrafts’ Etsy shop – where you can also find a Zelda Triforce rug to go with it.

I’m actually tempted to buy one of these, and Frankenstein it together with the wiring from an original controller it so it actually works as a giant foot-powered joypad for my 8-bit console.

Kwon Sunman’s Rug With Scale is a neat-looking scale that looks like a shaggy rug. In addition to looking all warm and fuzzy, the scale will track your weight and can also display your target weight in comparison to your previous weight and goal weight.

I use a scale regularly and wouldn’t mind something like this that’s nice and soft underneath my feet instead of the typical cold metal or glass scales out there. Too bad it’s just a concept design at this point.

Handcrafted by Mindy Y. (aka “enemyairship”), the 7-foot square, 8-bit Racoon Mario rug is made from 386 individual “granny square” pixels. It took Mindy about 120 hours to put the whole thing together, and she even ended up using a color-coded Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to plan out the design. How geeky indeed!

Mindy also created the accompanying Question Mark Block ottoman, a 15-inch cube stitched from vinyl fabric, yet not stocked with any coins, or 1-up mushrooms. What’s the deal? When I put my feet up on this thing, I expect some power-ups dammit!

Imagine the surprise of your roommate when they wake up tomorrow morning to find this Blood Bath shower curtain hanging in place of the old one. Whether they think Anthony Perkins came back to life to stab you to death or there was a midnight zombie attack, who cares? Either way, it’s bound to provoke a reaction.

To complete the effect, be sure to mix up some Karo syrup and red food coloring and splatter some down in the drain. Maybe a few drips on the floor, leading to the toilet too. If you’d rather save yourself the mess, you could also pick up this matching bloody bath mat.

The guys over at UK gift maker SpinningHat came up with these sick and twisted things, and I love them for it. I found the shower curtain over at ParamountZone for just £8.99 (appx. $13 USD) – but there’s no word on when they’ll start stocking the matching bath mat.

Built by electronics hacker Maurin Donneaud, the huge keyboard rug rolls out onto the floor, and lets your type with your socks on. In order to make the larger-than-life keys work, Maurin had to punch hundreds of individual holes under each letter to ensure that the conductive switches beneath the fabric would trigger when walked on.

The whole thing kind of reminds me of the giant piano keyboard that Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia stomped all over in Big.

Each squishy floor tile measures 40cm x 40cm (15.74 x 15.74″), and if you’re willing to spend some serious dough, you can cover your entire floor with ‘em. At $23 a piece, they’re more expensive than some schmancy Persian rugs, but for dedicated Mario fanboys and fangirls, money should be no object. After all, you should have plenty of extra gold coins lying around?

They’re made in Mario, Shroom, Goomba, Question Mark Block and Brick patterns, but the bricks are currently sold out, so my dreams of recreating the entire Mushroom Kingdom in my living room have been dashed for now. Made by Banpresto, they’re available from NCSX.

Panasonic’s new heated rugs have a special radiant mat that sits beneath the surface of the carpet to keep things nice and warm. Your bare feet should have nothing to complain about with these rugs cranking out temperatures all the way up to about 114°F/46°C. But if that’s too hot for you, no worries – they are adjustable. In addition to a variety of fabric styles, they plan on offering wooden surfaces as well.

And you don’t need to worry about Rover taking a whiz on one of these and electrocuting himself. The heating elements are waterproof, and the rugs are designed for stain and germ resistance.
