Whether you’re into Doctor Who or Star Wars (or both) – there’s a new way for you to secure your small valuables. These new digital “smartsafes” were spotted during the 2012 UK Toy Fair, and they look pretty nifty.

For starters, there’s a safe that looks just like the TARDIS, complete with all the appropriate blue Police Box details, including a flashing blue light on the roof. It looks like it’s a pretty decent size, and could hold small, but precious things like coins, jewelry or even small documents. Of course, there’s no telling if they might get transported to some other time or dimension once you put them in there and shut the door.

Star Wars fans can skip the TARDIS and go straight for the R2-D2 safe, which finally proves that there wasn’t actually a little person inside of the droid, but a hollow storage compartment perfect for holding onto your precious galactic credits and other goodies.

Each safe locks using an app which runs on your iPhone, iPod Touch or Android phone which outputs a series of blinking lights when docked – so your only key is a mobile device with your code keyed in. Of course, the biggest problem with small safes like these is that if a criminal really wanted what was inside, they could just pick it up and crack it open with a lightsaber, a sonic blaster, or a ball-peen hammer.

Both safes both come from UK watch and gadget company Zeon, and are expected in stores sometime around June.

Last week I wrote about the cool TiGr bike lock that I figured would keep your bike safe from just about anything. If you looked at that lock and thought, “That’s not secure enough for my bike,” I have found the place you want to live. A building in Portland, Oregon has an old bank vault that it offers up to people that ride bikes for parking.

Look at this vault. It looks like gold from Fort Knox was stored inside at one point. The vault has racks on the wall that riders can put their bikes into vertically. Apparently, the building, called the Spalding Building, which was a former bank, has been converted into apartments of some sort.

The gigantic vault door weighs 16,000 pounds. Here is the part that maybe should have been kept secret. That giant vault door is rigged not to lock. It will still shut, but safety deemed the door needed to be non-locking. Maybe what you need is to combine that TiGr bike lock with this vault.

The most I have ever spent on a watch was about $100, and that was pushing it. I haven’t worn a watch in five years now; I just use my smartphone for the time. The rich folks out there like their fancy watches though and need a place to keep all those watches safe from thieves along with their other fancy stuff.

A new safe called the chromos from Brown Safe Manufacturing has debuted. The safe stands upright and looks to be pretty large. The thing is designed to keep fancy watches safe and even has a slew of automatic watch winders to keep your fancy collection on time.

The safe is claimed to be the most advanced ever with biometric finger print recognition, GPS anti-theft, a multi-sensor alarm, and more. It’s also supposed to be the only safe in the world made from military-grade ballistic armor. The watch storing section even rotates, but there are other configurations available too. I would bet this is one of those “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” things.

If you care about the environment, you’ll love that Lexon has just announced a new range of small appliances powered by renewable energy.

Designed by Elium Studio, the Lexon SAFE line of home goods come encased in environmentally-friendly corn bio-plastic and trimmed off with bamboo. I think best item in the collection is the little wind-up radio.

In addition to the wind-up radio, the collection includes a solar-powered calculator, alarm clock, and a LED flashlight.

An amazing breakthrough tape dispenser-technology that will surely and permanently change the lives of salesclerks, secretaries, teachers and cubicle dwellers round the world has been announced by Nichiban Co Ltd. The revolutionary new tape dispenser cuts tapes with a nearly straight edge, unlike the jagged ones produced by conventional, lesser, obsolete, traditional, inferior, plain sucky tape dispensers.

As you can see, the blade developed by Nichiban makes almost straight cuts because it is straight as well, with convex-shaped cutters that not only make for a safer tape dispenser but also one that requires less force to use. Here’s an ultra high tech black and white zoomed in up close shot comparison of the paradigm shifting difference between the crafts of the new and old tape dispensers:

And here’s a shot of the powerful Nichiban blade that will fillet the competition:

The new tape dispensers will be available in Japan later this month before inevitably taking over offices and desks worldwide. It will come in black and white and will sell for ¥2,310 (approx. $25 USD), while a replacement for its heart and soul – the blade – can be had for ¥525 ($5). Watch out, traditional tape dispenser makers, whoever the frak you are: the end is nigh.

I read a news story the other day that whenever the economy is in the crapper, sales of safes shoot through the roof. I guess its better than putting your money under the mattress, right? Here’s a crazy safe that should keep all but the most devious of thieves away from your stash.

Artist Alex Schlegel is the creator of this complicated puzzle-inspired safe. According to Alex, here’s how you open this crazy thing…

“The 13 drawers of this band-saw box rotate rather than open outward. Objects for safekeeping are placed into the large, central drawer through a hole in the bottom of the box. Since the arrows on the front of each drawer point toward the drawer’s open side, objects may be moved from one drawer to another by first lining up the arrows on the two drawers and then rotating the entire box so that the objects fall from the first drawer to the second.”

On second thought, now that I know how to get into it (and the fact that it’s made out of wood), maybe the mattress is a better idea.

The new Mercedes S600 Guard has factory-integrated preventive measures such as military-grade armor which can resist small arms projectiles, shrapnel and explosive charges as well as bulletproof glass. A self-sealing fuel system and fire-extinguishing technology help automatically contain any vehicle fires. Even the tires are designed to run flat in an emergency. An emergency fresh air system can even be equipped to counter any noxious gas substances and provide clean air to the passenger compartment.

Beyond the security features, the S600 Guard is no slouch in the performance department, featuring a 517 horsepower V12 bi-turbo engine under the hood. The car also includes a wide variety of high-tech features which are standard on the Mercedes S-class, including radar-assisted braking, a preemptive airbag system that can detect an impending crash before it occurs, and infrared headlights which provide night vision on an in-dash video screen.
