What better way could there be to protect your precious Apple iPhone from damage than to put it inside another slightly larger iPhone – one made from soft felt.

That’s exactly what you’ll get when you pick up one of these whimsical handmade mobile device cases that looks just like an iPhone. Each one is lovingly handstitched by L´atelier de Luluu, and made from multiple layers of thick protective felt to keep your gadgets good as new.

But as you can see from the photo below, this cushy case won’t just hold iPhones. From what I can tell, that’s some sort of LG Smartphone lurking inside there like a high-tech hermit crab that stole the shell off a prematurely deceased gadget. Or like Buffalo Bill wearing a victim’s skin in The Silence of the Lambs for you sickos out there.

And if you’d rather pull the old reverse-double-switcheroo, you could always cloak your iPhone inside this felt Samsung Instinct instead.

You can find these quirky iPhone cases and others over at L´atelier de Luluu over on Etsy.

Samsung unveiled the LD220 USB monitor at the recent World IT Show in Korea. I’m pretty sure that the monitor has its own power supply, but still, you won’t have to worry about video cards or adapters with this bad boy thanks to its USB DisplayLink connection.

AVING didn’t mention the size of LD220’s screen, but judging from the pictures I’d say it’s about 22″. Or am I mistaken?

Would it be possible to have a multi-monitor setup using a USB hub and a bunch of LD220’s? If so, that would be dead easy to do. God bless (South) Korea.

CNET has just reviewed Samsung’s BD-P4600 Blu-ray player, and they say that although it’s not the most cost-effective Blu-ray player in the market, it does pack quality performance, improved read and loading times and a sleek and sexy exterior.

The main selling point of the BD-P4600 is obviously its unusual looks. CNET summarized Samsung’s design…

CNET summarized Samsung’s design philosophy into three main principles: “rounded corners, translucent red highlights, and a glossy black finish”. It’s a bit too fancy for my tastes, especially if I take into account that all that gloss translates into a more expensive, but not necessarily better, media player. In fact, CNET mentioned that the BD-P4600 uses the exact same video processing chip as its cheaper yet uglier sibling, the BD-P1600.

Like a lot of sexy and modern home entertainment equipment today, the BD-P4600 is thin, wall-mountable, and expensive. How expensive? Try $500 USD. That’s right: the BD-P4600 makes the PS3 look cheap. On the other hand, you can’t mount your PS3 to a wall, can you? The BD-P4600 also comes with a stand for those who aren’t bent on putting stuff on walls. Touch-sensitive controls and a slot-loading design round out the player’s fancy aura.

On the geekier side of things, CNET says that the BD-P4600 did very well both on their benchmark tests (Video Resolution, Film Resolution, and jaggies test) and in actual use; I think it made Ghost Rider almost watchable. Almost. The BD-P4600 also impressed CNET with its loading times: “…it’s the first one we’ve used that feels just as responsive as the PS3, and in some cases it also loads discs faster.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite as good when the reviewers played DVDs on it, failing a couple of jaggies tests and overall had less crisp and clean playback compared to a Panasonic DMP-BD60, another cheaper yet uglier Blu-ray player.

As you can see the BD-P4600 has a standard composite output, an HDMI output and an optical digital audio output, but no composite video output. It also has 2 USB ports. The BD-P4600 is capable of streaming Netflix and Pandora via Ethernet, but it also comes with a Wi-Fi USB dongle for wireless connectivity. It can also stream media from a connected PC. MP3, JPEG and DivX formats are supported, but AAC is not. The player also has 1GB of on-board memory, perfect for downloading and playing BD Live content.

Overall, I think the BD-P4600 has an awkward name for a sexy device. Oh and it’s for people who want more than something that works. You rich fools can get your own BD-P4600 at Best Buy for $500 USD.

Samsung’s UltraTOUCH S8300 is one of the phones that the Korean company revealed at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress. Samsung knows that all touchscreen phones stand under the shadow of the mighty iPhone. In an effort to differentiate their product from the iMoneyprinter, Samsung came up with an ad that showcases “8 different uses” for the S8300. But like an FOTC marketing strategy, their ad isn’t really intended for humans.

Awwwwwwww. That’s right: the S8300 can be used by hedgehogs and other animals. For what? And what type of hedgehogs would use it? Watch the ad to find out. And call your girlfriend because she will absolutely love this. You’re welcome.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Samsung also has… oh you’re watching the clip again. Sorry. Go ahead.

Samsung also has a plain old boring product page for the UltraTOUCH for people who’d rather see product specs instead of puppies and wabbits.

Samsung is set to unveil an eco-friendly cellular phone at the 2009 Mobile World Congress. Called “Blue Earth”, the phone packs a number of environment friendly features, such as a solar panel on the back of the phone and an app called eco walk that tells you how many trees you’ll save if you walk to your destination instead of driving or riding a vehicle.

Maybe Greenpeace can host competitions for the most number of trees saved based on that app, something like “Eco Walk Around The World: Winner gets a Hummer” . Maybe not. Other features of the Blue Earth include the phones’ shell which is made out of recycled plastic, and an “eco-mode” or low-power consumption mode.

I’m pretty sure that the phone will also have a charger like all other phones, unless Samsung expects us to put the phone on top of our heads or have it face down on our palms while we’re walking around, aiming for the top score on eco walk.

Earlier today, I told you guys about these cool little USB monitors that you could attach to your PC so you could stick your spare palettes, widgets and menus on them. But the problem was that they’re only available in Korea. So I set out on a mission to find something similar which could be purchased right here in the good old U.S. of A. My mission was a success.

These LCD screens from Samsung may look like your typical digital photo frames, but they have a unique feature that lets you use them as a secondary PC monitor, without need for a special video card.

The 8-inch version offers an 800×600 resolution, while the 10-inch has a crisp 1024×600 screen. Both models also 1GB of internal image storage and a memory card slot if you want to use them as a digital photo frame.

Now I better get mine ordered before all you guys buy up all the inventory!

Designed for people like me who like to use applications with tons of palettes open (think anything from Adobe), the Kuato-like outgrowth lets you drag those extra windows and widgets out of the way of your primary workspace.

Now I know you could just buy a bigger monitor, but there’s something about getting those small windows out of the way that I find strangely appealing. The SyncMaster 2263DX should be available any day now for about $550.

Those of us in the States tend to think of GPS navigators as relatively utilitarian devices that help us find our way when we’re too afraid to ask for directions at the gas station. In Asia, GPS devices seem to be on the way to becoming much more.

Case-in-point: the new Provia A1 navigator from Korea’s HTMS. Not only does this new GPS device look totally slick, it’s loaded with more features than you’ve ever dreamed of on your car’s dashboard. For starters, navigation is done using amazingly detailed, razor-sharp 3D maps, complete with models of buildings and other landmarks.

Then, there’s a complete media player with audio and fullscreen video playback in a wide variety of formats. It’s even got a “picture-in-picture” mode, so you can watch a movie while you drive and get directions. Also along for the ride is a DMB receiver, which means it can receive over-the-air digital television broadcasts. It’s all displayed on a gorgeous Samsung 800 x 480 resolution widescreen 7-inch display, complete with a touchscreen interface. It even offers handwriting recognition when you control it with an included stylus.

The Provia A1 is backed by a beefy Intel PXA270 processor, running at 520MHz, the same chip used to run some of the more powerful PDAs out there. There’s 128MB of on-board SDRAM, 128MB for program storage, and you can add up to 2GB more via an SD card. Unfortunately, we’ll probably never see one of these outside of Korea.

To put that in perspective, the displays are just about the thickness of heavy card stock paper. The initial panels are just 2.2-inches diagonal, and planned for use in mobile phones and other portable gadgets.

Samsung plans on ramping up production of the super-thin displays in the coming months, but initial yields are only around 40 percent, meaning about 60 percent of displays produced end up in the scrap pile. That will result in higher retail prices for now. However, as OLED production quality increases, screen size will increase and prices should fall.

A couple of week’s back I told you about the upcoming Samsung F700 mobile phone, which looks poised to give the Apple iPhone a pretty good run for its money. Well hot on the heals of that phone, Samsung has revealed another sweet looking touchscreen / keyboard hybrid phone, the SGH-F520.

The F520 is similar in many ways to the F700, with a slick, Flash-based user interface, touchscreen, media player and true 3G connectivity. The F520 however has a really cool trick up its sleeve; the keyboard slides in two directions: one to reveal a limited phone dialer, and the second to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. It also has a 3-inch diagonal (480 x 272 resolution) screen, which is actually a little larger than the screen on the F700. It’s got a 3-megapixel camera, full HTML web browsing and video playback too.

The more I see phones like this one, the more I think that Apple is going to be challenged keeping up with the pace of the mobile phone industry. Companies like Nokia, LG and Samsung are used to churning out dozens of new models every year, so are able to react to market changes very quickly. Conversely, Apple is used to producing just a handful of iPod models every year or two. This may give them some advantages on the quality front, but I’m not sure that’s going to be enough to keep up with the joneses.

Seems like every few days another mobile phone vendor tries to steal some thunder from Apple’s much anticipated iPhone. Samsung has now thrown their hat into the ring by throwing down with their own widescreen, touch-sensitive media phone.

The Samsung Ultra Smart F700 features a sleek, modern design that’s a little more rugged looking than Apple’s iPhone. For starters, the F700 has a large, 2.78-inch touchscreen display, running at 240×400 resolution. In addition, it’s got a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard lets you quickly type e-mails and text messages. It’s a full triband GSM phone, with 3G support for EDGE, GPRS,UMTS and HSDPA high-speed wireless service, as well as Bluetooth.

The phone features robust multimedia playback capabilities for MP3 and MP4 files as well as a variety of other formats. The F700 also has a solid 5-megapixel digital camera, with a smaller secondary camera for teleconferencing. A full HTML web browser is also included. While the F700 doesn’t feature some of the fancier features of the iPhone such as the accelerometer or multi-touch display, nor does it offer WiFi access, it does one-up the iPhone with its expandable memory, 3G support and slide-out keyboard.

Keep an eye out for this one later this year.

According to a recent report from ABI Research, the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray format war will be won not by either format, but by dual-format players, such as the recently released LG BH100 combo player. According to the Steve Wilson, ABI’s principal consumer electronics analyst: “We believe that universal players will come to dominate the high-definition DVD player market.”

In addition to the LG player that hit shelves this week, Samsung and other vendors are expected to release combination HD DVD / Blu-Ray players in the coming months. Initially, such players are expected to remain costly, with prices around $1000 to $1200. However, fully integrated chipsets will bring prices down over time. That all said ABI doesn’t think that widespread adoption will take off until street prices drop to around $200 (which ABI predicts will happen by 2009). Guess it’s time to sell that PS3 for scrap value.

One of the biggest problems with touchscreen interfaces is the lack of any sort of tactile feedback. In response to this concern, Samsung has released a touchscreen phone with Immersion’s VibeTonz haptic feedback system.

The Samsung SCH-W559 phone provides users with a vibration that approximates the sensation of a key click when they interact with the phone’s touchscreen. The QVGA color touchscreen display also supports handwriting recognition. The quad-band phone also features typical media phone capabilities including a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth and audio/video playback. As the phone is currently not available outside of Asia, I’m hoping this feature will find its way into some products stateside.

The displays feature full 1920×1080 resolution panels, in a sleek design that conceals the built in speakers by hiding them in the sides of the cabinet. The sets also offer Samsung’s FilterBright2 Plus technology to help reduce glare and increase contrast even in bright environments. The displays will also have a wide array of inputs including three HDMI ports, and even a USB 2.0 port. Also on board will be a built-in ATSC/NTSC tuner for over-the-air television programming.

A few months back, there were rumors on the street that Dell was going to release a 27-inch widescreen LCD monitor. Now it appears that these rumors may be true. An image was leaked on the Dell website showing the inputs for the heretofore unseen flat panel.

A Dell employee confirmed to website DailyTech that the image was from the training manual for their upcoming W2707C display. Further speculation is that the monitor is positioned to cross over Dell’s television and their computer monitor lines by including both computer inputs such as DVI and USB as well as television inputs such as component and composite, but not HDMI. The panel is assumed to use Samsung’s new 27-inch 1920×1200 glass, which would be sufficient for 1080p+ resolution.

Dell has generally received high marks for their 24-inch (2407WFP) and 30-inch (3007WFP) widescreen monitors, so I’m looking forward to checking this one out when it hits the street.

Samsung’s upcoming CLP-300 and CLP-300N claim to be the world’s smallest and lightest color laser printers.

The printers measure just 15.4″ W x 13.5″ D x 10.4″ H and weigh less than 30 lbs each. They feature a unique toner system which minimizes the size of the printer as well as cutting down on the noise of mechanical toner systems in competitors’ printers. The drawback to this system is that it does reduce the number of prints you can get per toner refill, though.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to print color documents such as flyers or presentations, a color laser is usually your best choice. Color laser printers generally run faster and more cost-effectively than inkjets, but photographic quality usually isn’t as good. Output speed on these little printers is rated at up to 17ppm black-and-white and up to 4ppm in full color. Resolution is rated at 2400×600 dots per inch. The printers are duty rated at 24,200 pages per month; try throwing that at an inkjet and get back to me.

Pricing and release dates haven’t been confirmed yet, but I’ve heard rumors of a sub-$300 street price for the CLP-300 and just a little more for the networked version (the CLP-300N.)
