Chip Chick’s Ali was able to test a unit of Sansa’s yet to be released slotRadio, their answer to Apple’s iPod shuffle. A quick look at the slotRadio tells us that the only thing the two music players have in common is their small size.

The most notable difference of the slotRadio from the Shuffle, and from all other music players, is that it comes preloaded with 1000 songs. Now we don’t know yet whether these will be pop songs or chart-toppers or crappy songs, but Ali says that “SanDisk is working with Billboard to provide the music, and Akon definitely has some music on there along with many other top hit artists.”

I’m willing to bet that the free songs will make or break the slotRadio. See, the slotRadio will sell for $99 USD, which is more expensive than the 2Gb Shuffle. But two things might justify the price difference: First of all, the cheapest price for a song at the iTunes Store is $0.69. If the 1,000 preloaded songs are worth keeping, then people who buy the slotRadio just saved themselves at least $690! But of course that’s quite a big “If”.

Second, unlike the Shuffle, the slotRadio is expandable because it uses microSD cards. Meaning if you have any microSD card, you can take out the slotRadio card that contains the preloaded songs and even use a bigger capacity (microSDs go up to 16Gb) card to store your music.

Using microSD cards for storage also means that adding and removing music is as simple as drag and drop on both Macs and PCs. Unfortunately, Ali says that you can’t “see” the preloaded mp3 files on the included microSD card. I’m pretty sure you can still reformat the card if you don’t want to keep any of the songs, but if a customer happens to like those preloaded songs, he has to make sure that he doesn’t lose the included microSD card. Because if you can’t access the mp3 files, that means you can’t copy or move those free songs.

If you find it weird that the Shuffle has no screen, you’ll be baffled by the slotRadio because it lacks a play button. Sansa, what you been drinkin? I guess it will start playing music as soon as you plug your earphones in, seeing as it only has back and forward buttons. Like other Shuffle competitors the slotRadio has a screen – albeit a black and white one – and built-in FM Radio.

The slotRadio is probably aimed at casual listeners, people who don’t have an extra hard drive devoted just for music files. It’s good for people who travel a lot or exercise regularly because of its size and the adequate capacity for songs. But again I think that the quality of those 1,000 free songs will decide whether or not the slotRadio will become popular. Having a quick and easy answer to “How do you make this thing play?” would also help.

First off, at $59.99, the Sansa Express player is 20 bucks cheaper than the 1GB iPod Shuffle. The player even squeezes in a nice (albeit tiny) OLED display that shows track, title and playlist information. While the Sansa only comes with 1GB of storage, it’s got a microSD slot so you can add on more memory when you need it. It even has a built-in microphone and an FM tuner with recording capabilities. Battery life is rated at a solid 15 hours, and it can play MP3, WMA, Protected WMA, WAV, and Audible file formats. If you’re even considering picking up an iPod Shuffle, you’ll want to give this one a look before you buy.

SanDisk’s latest entry into the mobile media player market does one thing that makes it stand out from the pack… it can download tracks directly via a Wi-Fi network. The Sansa Connect will let you access popular online music services without using a PC, letting you download and stream content over a wireless connection.

The Sansa Connect player lets you listen to internet radio stations wirelessly as well as to listen to music subscription services on the go. SanDisk hasn’t been forthcoming with details about what music services they’ll support, but if I had to guess, I’d say they’ll end up supporting PlaysForSure subscription-based services such as URGE, Napster and MusicNow among others. Taking a page from Microsoft’s Zune, the player also offers social networking capabilities that let you see what other friends are listening to, and listen to the same tracks as long as you have a valid subscription for the same music.

The initial model features a nice 2.2″ color display, 4GB of flash memory and a MicroSD slot if that’s not enough memory for you. Priced at $249.99, it should hit stores this March.

Hot on the heels on the announcement of of Apple’s gorgeous iPhone, Sandisk has announced their own widescreen media player, the Sansa View. While the Sansa View doesn’t offer all the Smartphone capabilities of Apple’s beauty, it does offer a pretty good value for a widescreen media player.

Priced at $299, the Sansa View features a nice 4-inch widescreen display, and can play music, videos and photos in a variety of popular formats. It comes with 8GB of on-board flash memory, as well as the ability to expand with SD/SDHC memory cards. It features a removable, rechargeable battery and since the player uses flash memory, you can expect better than average battery life too. You can also connect the player to your TV via a docking station and play back files at up to 1080i resolution. The Sansa View comes in a nice slim design that’s only 0.66″ thick (for comparison, the player is about 25% narrower and thinner than a Sony PSP).

The Sansa View should be available sometime before the end of March 2007.
