I was raised by my parents to be an extremely thrifty girl. And I <del>was</del> am one, unless I find myself face-to-face with these items that I simply cannot walk away from: clothes, shoes, makeup, accessories, or perfume. (Thank goodness I’m not really into cars or jewelry.) Of course, I’ve learned how to balance my finances and just spend the enough (and sensible) amount of money every month.

But sometimes, I find myself wanting two things at once and being unable to decide which item I should save for first. I’m thinking this 50/50 Savings Bank could help a lot in my decision making, because I wouldn’t really be deciding anything at all.

It sort of works like one of those Plinko-style games where you drop a token (or in this, your loose change) in a slot above and it just goes plinking down a random side. To make sure you don’t accidentally (or purposefully) switch the funds up to buy whatever it is you want, you can write down what each side is for on the wipe-clean eraser boards on the front. The huge downside is that you can only (and obviously) save up using coins and not bills.

We’ve featured a lot of piggy banks and other coin storage devices over the years, but I think this one is the most high-tech yet.

The Personal ATM works a lot like actual ATMs, but not only can you deposit money in it, you can also set a target date or a target amount of money so you can monitor (and agonize) how long you have to wait before you should withdraw or how much you still have to save.

Just like the real thing, the Personal ATM comes with an ATM card with a modifiable PIN that you’ll need to insert to transact with the machine. It also has an anti-theft alarm, calculator and time and date function. You can order one at Latest Buy for $44 (USD).

Looking for a place to keep all that loose change you’ve been saving up since you gave up on tipping the baristas at the Starbucks? Keep ‘em all in this whimsical piggy bank that chows down on your coinage before it heads deep into its porty, porky belly.

As soon as you put a coin in its mouth, the little pink piggy gets down to business, making appropriately piggish snorting sounds as it gulps your money.

As an added bonus – if you flip him upside down, he kinda looks like Spiderpig.

Available from UK gadget shop GadgetShop, you’ll need to save up £14.99 (appx. $30 USD) in coins before you have enough money to put one on your desk.

The electronic piggy bank waits for you to add coins too it every day. If you’re not consistent, it’ll explode, sending coins all over your desktop.

If you don’t add coins each and every day, the bank will start to vibrate, flash its lights and make sounds once an hour until you pay up. If you don’t get to it in time, BOOM! Coin-tastrophe!

Japanese toymaker TakaraTomy plans on releasing the exploding piggy bank just in time for the New Year, so you can start out 2008 right by keeping your resolution to save more money. It’ll cost about ¥3,000 yen, or about 2,700 pennies if you’re already starting to save up for one.
