Doctor Who’s Sonic Screwdriver is pretty versatile. It can rewire an electrical control box, can open just about any door, can scan aliens and now it can also keep your neck warm when visiting cold planets.

This knitted scarf comes from Etsy seller MyAlterknits and is a warm and toasty replica of the The 11th Doctor’s (Matt Smith’s) Sonic Screwdriver. The scarf is five feet ten and a half inches long and seven inches at it’s widest point. It’s also reversible of course. While it will keep you warm, it probably won’t be able to repair any broken stuff.

This is for serious Whovians only as it will cost you $140(USD), but I say it’s worth it if you’re a big fan of the show (and live somewhere cold). It’s not everyday you see a Sonic Screwdriver scarf. It will certainly make you stand out and you will be the envy of every geek who sees you.

Lugging around your camera to take photos can be tiresome, especially if it’s a DSLR, which is why I like the idea of this scarf camera strap combination. The best part is that you can DIY, however you’ll need to be able to sew and find the right components to make this work and not end up with your precious camera on the ground.

This hack comes courtesy of Stacie Grissom and it uses a silk scarf, that needs to be about 60 inches in length, three key rings, and a couple of other odds and ends. The ends of the scarf will need to be cut, then folded over and sewn with the a keyring popped in. Two small leather straps can be added to decorate your scarf-strap to make it look cooler.

The end result is a pretty sturdy and stylish looking camera strap – though you won’t be able to use it to keep your neck warm with that camera attached. Of course, you can really do this with any fabric you want, so you can have your own personal design.

Head on over to Photojojo for instructions on how to make your own scarf camera strap.

I live in Chicago, so we still have about a bazillion weeks left to winter, and I could definitely use a new scarf to keep warm. Thankfully, I might just have found the one I’m looking for.

This whimsical crocheted scarf by Michigami Creations is based on the classic arcade shooter, Galaga – which just so happens to be one of my favorite games of all time. As a matter of fact, I still occasionally boot up MAME on my Dingoo (boy, does that sounds weird) to play a late-night round of the old boy.

Unfortunately for you guys, I already bought this one (for just $20 bucks), so you’ll have to hope you can convince Miss Michigami to make you another one. You could always pick up her Pac-Man, Zelda Triforce or Chocobo or Weighted Companion Cube scarves before they get snatched up.

I’m not even gonna lie: the hat in this post is expensive. At $63, that hat should not only keep my head warm, but also style my hair for me, thus saving precious time in my morning routine. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case. Instead, this hat is imbued with the special power of making everyone within a two mile radius stare at you… but Noby Noby Boy fans tend to dig that sort of thing.

Noby Noby Boy, from the creator of Katamari Damacy, is a PSN game, and just in case you’ve forgotten what the hero looks like in non hat-and-scarf form, please allow me to remind you:

All things considered, that hat-and-scarf combo could have been a lot more embarrassing. As it is, it’s only embarrassingly adorable.

Gege Crochet loves scarves. I think “scarves” is a weird word. Fortunately Gege’s scarves are anything but weird, like this nice Princess Toadstool scarf.

She said that she made this scarf to complement a Mario scarf that she also made. But then she didn’t like the back of the scarf with all the ends weaved in, so she made a pocket! I don’t understand how that solves things – or what the problem was to begin with - but yay for you Gege Crochet!

As you can see a DS fits nicely into the pocket. Gege says that “the DS provides a nice heft to the scarf, so if you are walking down the road and are mugged by one of Bowser’s minions, you can swing the scarf and whack them in the head.” And that’s what scarves are for.

Check out Gege’s blog and her Flickr page to see more of her crocheted creations. While Gege’s crafting skills are enviable, what I really envy about her is that she lives somewhere cold enough that she can wear a scarf, because I’m being boiled alive back here. I think the sun moved in next door. My sweat is sweating. People are spontaneously evaporating outside.

But few examples can match both the artistry and dedication that went into creating this Guitar Hero… scarf.

So why is this

Scarves are pretty popular as the geekier crafts go, with everything from the real Punch-Out!! (in the Mike Tyson days) to Space Invaders getting the wintry neckwear treatment. But few examples can match both the artistry and dedication that went into creating this Guitar Hero scarf.

So why is this particular scarf head and shoulders (and, uh, necks) above the rest? Not only does it put the iconic Guitar Hero look on perfect display, but that note highway actually corresponds to a song from Guitar Hero 3: “Knights of Cydonia” by Muse. Creator meekssandygirl crocheted the scarf for her husband, and wanted it to be accurate and unique, so she chose one of his favorite songs. The result? Made of pure Star Power.

Even though we’re a couple of days into Spring, for so many of us in Northern climates, it still feels like the dead of Winter. It’s not too late to keep yourself toasty with one of these warm and wooly Space Invaders scarves.

Handcrafted by Edinburgh textile artist Catriona McLaughlin (aka Wildcat Designs), this new Space Invaders scarf (version 2.0) improves upon her original design with bigger, bolder invaders which can be seen from much further away.

No actual Space Invaders were harmed in the making of these scarves, instead each one is made from soft and fuzzy 100% Merino lambswool from Scotland. Measuring about 70-inches long, the 2.0 version is also about 10 inches longer than the original, keeping your neck just that much warmer.

You can grab this one from Wildcat’s shop over on DaWanda for €35 (appx. $54 USD) or for those of us in the States, you also might need to check out her Etsy shop.
