People all over the world do either crazy stuff or get into stupid messes because of carelessness. One recent incident of stupidity was when this man dropped a firecracker down a manhole in front of his two kids.

Why he chose to do so, I have no idea. Maybe he wanted to give his kids some sort of show, or maybe he was just choosing not to use his noggin. Or maybe he was just plain crazy.

You can see for yourself what happened when the firecracker he dropped ignited the trapped gas down the manhole:

Thank goodness his kids weren’t physically harmed when the manhole blew up and its metal cover went flying. I’m sure they probably won’t want to go near any manholes anytime soon, though. Especially not with their firecracker-wielding father.

From what I gather, Minecraft is already a pretty scary game on it’s own, but this mod by Minecraft Forum member/Dr. Who fan/general cruel person a_dizzle makes being a blocky miner and crafter a lot scarier. The mod is called Weeping Angels, after the Dr. Who aliens of the same name. And yep, this mod puts the bastards in the game.

Similar to the Boo from Super Mario Bros. 3 (and subsequent games), the Weeping Angels can only move when they’re not being observed. So as long as you keep your eyes on them, you’re good. But once they do get the chance to move they’ll move. Quickly and noiselessly. Actually the mod is quite buggy, as there will be instances when the Weeping Angels will cheat and still move even if you’re looking at them. Which makes them even scarier. Thankfully you can kill them using an iron pickaxe.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Combine these with the Endermen – who go crazy in the opposite manner; i.e. they go berserk if you look at them – and Minecraft makes Resident Evil seem like a Saturday morning cartoon. Get into the Halloween spirit and download the Weeping Angels mod from the Minecraft Forum.

Halloween may still be over a month away, but it’s never too early to start figuring out how you’re going to scare the crap out of trick-or-treaters, right?

Well, if you’ve got $3500 to spare, have I got something for you! This animatronic door is one of the best scares I’ve seen in a while, and there’s one for sale right now over on Etsy.

As you can see from the photo above, this door has a nasty surprise hidden inside of it. Here, watch the video and you’ll see what I mean:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Nice effect, eh? Especially that part when it looks like the axe is chopping through the door, right? The effect is achieved with a 22-inch LCD monitor, along with a special DVD from Hi-Rez Designs which has DTMF tracks which cue the pneumatics behind the door at just the right time. They even offer up build instructions for customers who want to build one for themselves.

While you could try and build your own door, it’s probably way easier to pick up this one that’s already built over on Etsy, from the appropriately named “999deadpatricia”. And if you don’t have $3500 to spare, you could always just pick up the DVD, and just play that on a monitor (without the pneumatics).

I so want to replace my front door with this for Halloween this year.

Sean Murphy was looking at sets of faces for one of his experiments when he observed something really freaky. Skimming fairly rapidly through pictures of two faces side-by-side, Murphy started noticing that some of the people he had pictures of had grotesque and deformed faces. But when he looked at the pictures again, this time individually, they all looked normal.

Murphy, who undoubtedly possesses a strong stomach and an unbelievable resistance to nightmares, decided to look into the illusion further with the help of his colleagues Jason Tangen and Matthew Thompson. The three called it the “Flashed Face Distortion Effect”. Watch the video below and follow the instructions to make your brain creep you out.

Scary huh? Although Murphy, Tangen and Thompson have yet to fully explain the illusion, it seems as if it happens because we’re only given a short period of time to examine the pictures. For some reason our brains want to differentiate the two faces that we’re seeing, and to do so under the time constraint it ends up exaggerating the features of each face. For me it’s the slanted, evil eyes that creep me out the most.

Okay, I’m really scared now. There is now a robot that is fully capable of deboning a ham – all on its own.

Developed by the Mayekawa Electric, this automated ham-boning robot was designed to cut up down on human butchers. The HAMDAS-R robot can expedite the process of gutting you cutting your ham up into pieces. It’s such an efficient killing boning machine, that it can double the kill count productivity of a plant, allowing for the boning of 500 humans hams in an hour with just 10 workers, versus the normal 20.

Given the well known fact that pigs are the perfect human analog (I saw it on an episode of Mythbusters) All they need to do is combine HAMDAS-R with that NEC robot that thinks humans smell like bacon, and the end of the world will be nigh.

This ghost-faced killer (ok, we don’t know if he’ll kill anyone) is named the REEM-H2 and it reminds me of the strange faces of the ghosts in Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. REEM is made by PAL Robotics – yes guys, he’s your friend, not your enemy, and is a service/maid robot. It will come with a autonomous navigation system, voice and face recognition, a chest-mounted touchscreen menu, and the power to carry big objects, such as boxes or luggage.

Saw this on TV yesterday. At around 4 in the morning. Not good. Which is a short first-person PC game which gives players a simple goal: find a way out of the goddamn horror house. Game creator Mike Inel used simple graphics to great effect. Great, pants-pissing effect.

The game has two endings and can be finished in as little as 5 of the creepiest minutes of your gaming life.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If you have 3D glasses (the cheap ones with red and blue filters) you can view the game in 3D – just go to its YouTube page. You can download Inel’s game for free at GameJolt. Your PC must at least have Windows XP and a graphics card with Pixel Shader 2.0. For people like me who can’t (or refuse to) play the game, there’s another video on YouTube that shows one of the ways to finish the game.

It’s Strange & Wonderful Wednesday, and as I was perusing the offerings of the Internet I came upon Gerard Vlemmings’ – aka The Presurfer – link to an article on blogbits about weird cameras. They were weird alright: there was an 18-carat gold plated Pentax LX and even a pistol-shaped camera. But the article promised that the last ones on the list would leave me stunned. And man was I stu-freakin-nned. The last cameras on the list were made by American artist Wayne Martin Belger. The aesthetics of the cameras are no doubt unique, but what cranks up the weird to 11 are the materials that they’re made of. So what were those cameras? See for yourself:

That’s the Third Eye camera. Belger says that he made it “to study the beauty of decay.” It’s made of Aluminium, Titanium, Brass, Silver, and gem stones. And a 150 year old skull of a 13 year old girl.

Next up we have the Untouchable. Belger used it to take pictures of people suffering from HIV. Like the Third Eye, the Untouchable is made of several metals, plus HIV positive blood. The uh, blood serves as his red filter. Can’t make this stuff up.

The last camera that I’m sharing with you isn’t on the blogbits list; it’s called the Heart. Belger says that he designed it to take pictures of pregnant women who are at least 8 months pregnant, as well as to study his “relationship” with his twin brother, who unfortunately died at birth. So of course the camera is made of Aluminium, Titanium, Acrylic, Formaldehyde and an infant human heart.

Those of you who know their Photography may have deduced from the pictures that Belger’s creations are all pinhole cameras. Belger says that he prefers pinhole photography because of the unadulterated interaction between the camera and the subject. He designs his cameras with this same goal in mind, of wanting to study and relate to his subject.

Check out Belger’s site for more of his wonderfully weird artwork, along with sample photographs taken using each camera; read Belger’s statement regarding his work if you want to get a better grasp of his art. Me, I think I’m going to have to watch SpongeBob or something, or I might have trouble sleeping.

I think Gomez and Morticia should get this robotic hand piano to keep Thing company. Like Thing, the robotic hand piano doesn’t talk. Actually it can’t talk. Anyway, although it can’t talk, it can play classical music. And by play I mean two things: audio playback of its built-in classical piano music, and air piano, meaning its fingers move in sync with the music, as if it was playing on a piano.

After seeing white bread wrist rests I’ve learned not to question the motivation behind the creation of some things, so as to prevent bits of my brain from trickling down my nose. Sanity and rationale are rarely welcome here.

As you can see it’s encased in clear plastic so you can see its innards. If I ever encounter this hand in a dark place I’m going to drop dead out of sheer shock. Even if it’s playing Happy Birthday on a toy piano. Especially if it’s playing Happy Birthday on a toy piano.

You can buy it at Stupid.com for $13 USD. I wish it could also play this.

Artist Keetra Dean Dixon made these limited-edition “Great Slumber” pillows a while back, and I don’t think you could get her to make you one before tomorrow. But there’s no reason you can’t run to the fabric store, grab some red velvet, and stitch one together for your Halloween festivities. (Unless of course, you can’t sew, in which case you’re S.O.L.)

This amazing clock may have been constructed almost 400 years ago, but it’s just as bone-chilling as it was back then. To tell the time, just crack open his skull cap, and the clock is where his brains should be.

The skull and crossbones automaton clock has a mechanical moving jaw, and snakes that dart out of its eyeballs. The Watchismo Times describes it best:

“During the first minute, the skull’s expression seems to smile, the second minute it seems to laugh, the next appears to scream and finally, the jaws snap shut, as if the skull were trying to bite something. At the same time, one of the snakes slowly sinks back down into one of the eye sockets, while the other slowly comes out of the other eye, before retracting suddenly, as the first snake again springs out from its eye-socket.”

The gilded brass clock was built in 1610 by Nicolaus Schmidt der Junger in Augsberg, Germany and recently sold for $135,000. I guess I won’t be able to have this in my haunted house this Halloween.

Once powered up, the skull lights up with a pair of mighty evil looking red eyeballs, sure to give your haunted house visitors a fright.

The cool thing is that they’re only $2.85 each, so you could easily buy a hundred of these things and have your very own freaky skull army. Cool.

If you’re an Xbox 360 fan like me, you’re probably looking forward to the upcoming release of Bioshock. For those of you who unfamiliar with the game, the baddest baddie in the atmospheric thriller is known as “Big Daddy.”

It turns out that there’s now a life-sized replica of the scary creature making the rounds over in the UK.

Spotted “in the wild” by Kotaku reader Kotakuite Tezze, the imposing beast is currently on display at the London gaming shop, GAME. Digging around over on Flickr, I managed to come up with a couple more sightings of the bad-ass boss in other locations…

You definitely wouldn’t want to run into one of these in an alley.
