The designer behind these stools is Manuel Welsky. You start out with two different pieces: the metal screw head (which serves as the stand), and the solid cork stool (which serves as the seat.)

Put 2 and 2 together in your head and you probably already know what to do in order to form your very own SCRW stool. How high or how low the stool ends up is up to you, since it all depends on the number of times you turn the cork around.

If you’re interested, you can drop Manuel a line to ask about how you can purchase his SCRW Stools.

Have you ever thought about making portraits using screws? I never did but that didn’t stop Andrew Myers from using thousands of Phillips head screws to create these incredible three-dimensional portraits.

Each portrait is made up out of about 8,000 to 10,000 individual screws, carefully placed into a sheet of plywood.

Technically speaking, these are mixed-media art pieces, since once he’s done screwing around, he uses oil paint, paper, and other things to finish up his portraits. While the portraits aren’t completely rendered in 3D, they’ve got just enough depth to make them stand out.

Andrew Myers is a sculptor based in Laguna Beach, California, and he is probably one of the only artists using screws in this way.

Do you like taking apart your gadgets? Soon, it will be more difficult to take apart your iPhone 4. Why? It seems that Apple has decided that standard Phillips screws are far too easy to take out, and will be replacing the ones in future iPhones with something a little different. Specifically, the company is using a somewhat rare type of screw called a Pentalobe, which is shaped like a flower. These can not only be found in brand new iPhone 4′s, but also in recently repaired phones as well.

Apple hasn’t made any comment on this, but it is rather obvious that they are trying their best to keep people from opening up their phones. While it’s true that most people aren’t going to be able to do any sort of repairs themselves, there are things like custom cases and such that one could add if they chose. These new screws more or less prevent such modifications, and the screwdrivers for these are very difficult and costly to find.

Of course, if a person really wants to mod their phone, they’re going to figure out a way, right? The people over at iFixit have already put together an iPhone 4 Liberation Kit, which gives you the tools you need to remove and replace those two pesky screws with regular Philips ones. The kit will only run you $10, which isn’t expensive, but you really shouldn’t have to buy something like this just to open your phone.

We’ve certainly featured our fair share of unusual watches here on Technabob, so I figured why not continue that tradition with this watch that replaces normal hands with screw heads.

Conceptualized by China’s Tao Ma, the MEN2014 watch would replace the hour, minute and second hands with screw heads which have a small red mark at the end to indicate the current position on the dial. I have to say there’s something that I really like about the whole post-modern minimalism of the design.

At this point, the design is just a concept, but I sure hope that somebody decided to make these for real. I’m just glad that Tao chose to use flat-head screws, as I think that Phillips, Torx or Hex screws would be really hard to read.
