If you are a gamer who has a Sony Android tablet, Xperia PLAY Smartphone, or plans to get the PS Vita when it lands this is some seriously fantastic news for you. Sony has announced that it has a new software developer’s kit (SDK) coming in November that will ensure any PS Certified device can get games developed using the software.

What that means is that the game developer could use the PlayStation Suite SDK to develop one time in C#, then run their game on a multitude of devices. The PS Suite allows the game work on any PS Certified device. That means the same game could work on the Sony Android tablet, PS Vita and a bunch of other mobile gadgets.

Sony is also working to expand that PS Certified realm of devices to include even more. This new universal SDK should mean more games across the board, and lower costs for game developers.

With all the buzz about the new iPhone SDK, all kinds of nifty applications are starting to crawl out of the woodwork. Of all the coming programs, this LEGO construction concept application has to be one of my favorites.

Designed by Nicholas G Panas of play /, LEGO-touch will let you build virtual LEGO creations using a large catalog of basic building blocks. Using the iPhone’s multi-touch display, you can easily grab blocks and assemble them into just about any shape you can imagine. A slick user interface lets you easily zoom in and rotate your designs, and easily apply any color in the spectrum to each of your blocks.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

In addition to the basic block construction kit, Nicholas’ concept will let share your designs over the Internet. You can even create your own Mii-like avatar using those familiar LEGO block people. One of my favorite features is the ability to challenge your online friends to a LEGO “build-off”.

While you don’t get the tactile experience of holding real LEGO blocks in your hands, you do get the advantage of being able to carry all your creations in your pocket wherever you go. Plus, you never have to worry about running out of blocks.

play/ is currently working to launch the LEGO-touch concept into software production. Be sure to head on over to their website to check out their high quality Flash-based demonstration.

This just in: Steve Jobs has confirmed that Apple is working on an SDK for the development of native applications on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Straight from the horse’s mouth: “We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users.”

The reason for the delay: “It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task,” Jobs continues, “We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.”

I can’t tell you how excited I am that Apple has made this official. The iPhone is such a powerful device, and the fact that it’s been a closed platform up until now has really limited its potential.

Read the full announcement here.
