Most people hear the word “card” and associate it with business (business cards), with celebrations for special occasions (greetings cards), or with failing grades (report cards). Few will actually relate “card” to something as far-fetched as, let’s say, self-defense.

Maybe that’s what Hoang Nguyen and Anh Nguyen were banking on when they came up with Tha Business, which is a self-defense card kit that contains all you need to defend yourself (obviously) with card-like objects. Included in the kit are items which might come in handy when you need to fight someone off, like brass knuckles, pepper spray, a pocket knife, and a whistle.

And as you can see, each of these objects are rendered in card form. They’re also pretty handy too, because they’re approximately the same size as your credit card. Tha Business is still a concept design for now, but they seem like a really neat way to pack everything you need to defend yourself, so I hope that it actually gets made, stat.

Self-defense is a good thing to know. It’s not just about safety either. It’s a good way to get some exercise too. Forget personal trainers that cost a fortune. The Microsoft Kinect seems like the perfect way to learn how to take on foes while in the comfort of your own home.

At least I’m guessing that Ubisoft thinks so, since they have released a new gamed called Self-Defense Training Camp. The game will teach you how to handle attackers and knock them on their butt. You get both workouts and self-defense exercises that cover technique, reflexes, composure, and stamina.

There are also mini-games that train your reflexes and exercises that are said to help you stay calm in stressful situations. Need some training? The game will arrive on November 8th for the Xbox 360 with Kinect. What do you think? Will this be a good way to train people in the art of self defense or just another poor selling exercise game?

The next time your boss tells you that he’s still waiting for that TPS report, you might want to fill it out with one of these bad-ass pens in your hand.

The Pocket Shark pen ($6.99 USD) might look innocuous enough, but it’s actually made from glass-reinforced plastic and designed to act as an self-defense weapon in the event of an emergency (or if you’re just a lunatic). And while its normal day job is as a permanent marker, this is no ordinary Sharpie.

According to it’s maker Cold Steel, the Pocket Shark “features walls that are 4 times thicker than similar markers. This means it’s built for impact and, in a self-defense emergency it can become an efficient Yawara stick for driving off an attacker. Plus, the screw-top cap will stay in place and won’t pop off like a regular marker’s cap would when you strike a percussion blow, or when obtaining joint locks or submission holds. “ Yikes.

So the next time you head down to the accounting department and complain about their bureaucratic purchasing process, you’d better pay careful attention to the pens in the hands of the CPAs. You never know.

While this strange pink device might look like some sort of modern hair dryer, it’s not. In fact, the Avurt IM-5 is all about keeping people out of your face, not in it.

You see, the IM-5 is actually a high-tech update to the old can of pepper spray. Instead of using a spray can filled with aerosol propellant, the gun uses compressed nitrogen to fire a nasty blast of pelletized PAVA pepper powder at attackers from up to 40 feet away. And just in case you have lousy aim, it’s got a laser sight to make sure you don’t miss. It can even rapid-fire up to 5 shots to take out multiple assailants.

The $300 device certainly isn’t as dangerous to handle as a Taser, but you’ll probably want to check with your local law enforcement before you start shooting at irritating coworkers with one of these.
