Pulsing Light Bar iPod/iPhone Sound System: Disco, Disco Dock

From time to time, you come across some strange combinations in tech. While not all of them are good, I can see how this one might work in some instances. If you use your iPod/iPhone as your primary music player, and you need some lighting effects for your next in-home rave, check out the Music Dock with Pulsing Light Bar from Sharper Image.

The black light bar spans about 4 feet, so the device isn’t small. You have the option of having it output a soft glow (for mood lighting in your bedroom), a continuous strobe effect (for your dance party or to mess you up while you stare at it), or a an effect that flashes the light based on the BPM of the songs you listen too. I don’t know what a pulsating black light effect looks like, though.

I don’t know much about the quality of the stereo speakers, which for me is the most important when buying something like this, but the funky lighting does make me curious. If you want to check it out, the Pulsing Light Bar dock is available from Sharper Image for $149.99(USD).

Events Countdown Clock: Keep Pushing That Button!

When I see something like this, it makes me think of that darned button that needed to be pushed every 108 minutes in Lost. Well, now Sharper Image has come up with the Event Countdown Clock, and its has an event countdown timer for up to three events.

The clock will count down to your target times using days, hours, and minutes. You can even snooze events – in case you don’t want to deal with the reality of whatever milestone has arrived. It’s made out of stainless steel, so it doesn’t look bad either, although the face is a bit retro, so you have to like that style. It measures about 2½ inches on each side, and is powered by 2 “AAA” batteries.

Itower Omega: Give Your iPod a Lift

Usually, I just write off most stuff that mall-dweller The Sharper Image puts out as either too pedestrian, too tacky or both. However, I’m gonna give them a break on this one. Their new iTower Omega is actually quite striking, integrating an entire iPod-ready stereo system into a handsome looking black tower.

It stands almost four feet tall, and has a nice black-cherry wood finish (laminate, though.) A media player dock sits on top and works with any iPod with a docking connector.

The $299 iTower Omega features four stereo speakers, a single dome tweeter, two subwoofers and 60 watts of amplification under the hood. Frequency response is nothing to write home about at 100Hz to 16KHz, and I can’t imagine that stereo imaging will be very good, given the design. However, if you’re looking for a sleek way to incorporate an iPod sound system into your room, this one looks as good as anything out there.
