This new cell phone from Japan’s Softbank and ZTE is more of a security device than anything else. It’s kind of like a one-button panic alarm that’s wired into a cell phone. Apparently it’s designed for preschoolers and seniors.

Yes, smartphones don’t work for everyone, but I’m a bit surprised that this phone only has one button. The phone is designed to call parents or other emergency contacts when the caller needs immediate help. It seems to me that you’d need more than one button if you have multiple emergency contacts.

Once the call is completed, the device sends an automated email with GPS data pinpointing the caller’s location. There is also an alarm that will allow parents to find a child when it is lost. While a complete handset for kids won’t work for 5-year olds, I’ve seen plenty of them playing with iPhones, so using one isn’t that far behind.

What happens when you outfit your shiny new iPad with a couple of strips of extra-wide Velcro? You turn Apple’s portable tablet into a wall-mountable hands-free display, that’s what.

With strategically-placed strips of the toothy stuff, Jesse Rosten demonstrates a variety of nifty places you can stick your iPad once it’s been outfitted with Velcro. Check out Jesse’s video below to see some of his ideas.

It’s one of those “duh, why didn’t I think of that?” moments that I just love to see. Although I don’t know if I’d trust Velcro to hold it in place on a motorcyle like Jesse showed.

Whether you have bad eyesight, an aversion to technology, or are just an imbecile, have I got a cell phone for you!

This generic-brand mobile phone offers oversize numeric buttons (1-cm wide) that you can read from several feet away – making phone calls nearly fool-proof. The phone was mainly designed for seniors with limited tech savvy, but it’s fine if you’re just looking for a really simple cell phone too. Let me go on the record now by saying If I lose my ability to use the latest high-tech gadgets when I’m an old man, please just put me out of my misery.

The 6380 Senior Mobile Phone ($75 USD) does actually have a few handy features, including a built in flashlight, and a giant “SOS” button on the back that can automatically dial a pre-set emergency number, and emit a loud warning alarm. It’s also got a minimal display with large on-screen fonts, and a whopping 128×60 screen resolution. Sign me up now!

Actually, the 6380 does hide a couple of modern features under the hood, including a digital phone book, SMS messaging, a calendar, alarm clock, games (I can only imagine how much fun those are on that screen), and an FM radio. FM? I wanted an AM crystal radio set and a Victrola built-in.

Oh, and I forgot to mention one thing. The 6380 phone only works on GSM 900/1800 bands, so it works everywhere in the world except the U.S. and Canada. Oh well, I didn’t want one anyway.

3 X 3 X 1 Rubik’S Cube is Just a Wee Bit Too Easy to Solve

If you thought that 7 x 7 x 7 Rubik’s Cube was a little too difficult for your tiny brain, what with its 1.95 * (10^160) permutations, have I got a deal for you.

If you thought that 7 x 7 x 7 Rubik’s Cube was a little too difficult for your tiny brain, what with its 1.95 * (10^160) permutations, have I got a deal for you.

This 3 x 3 x 1 Rubik’s Cube (aka the “Floppy Cube”) is so simple that your cat should be able to solve it – with one paw tied behind its back.

Apparently, this Japanese cube-modder figured out a way to slice up the original cube so a single layer could still pivot and work as a simplified mini-puzzle. In addition to the 1-layer cube, he’s also built a 2-layer version, which is still much easier to solve than the original.

Me, I just used to take all the stickers off and put them on the proper sides. Isn’t that a reasonable solution?
