I’m not sure this is a great idea, but I can see how it might be useful to stick your iPhone onto a surface for a short time, to either share or show something. The Uguard Resin Skin is supposed to do this, without many complications. I just wonder if everyone will remember that it’s temporary, not permanent.

Thanks to its texture, the Uguard Resin Skin will stick to glass and hold your iPhone in place there. It should also provide users with better grip. It’s easy to remove and doesn’t leave any residue. I guess it’s an interesting use for a skin. You just need to remember that after a few moments, the skin will stop sticking and your iPhone will come crashing to the ground. if you’re not there to catch it.

You can get the iPhone Resin Skin in a variety of different colors directly from Uguard, who sell it for €15.50 (~$20 USD).

I have to say that these TARDIS skin covers look pretty awesome and will make your device stand out from the crowd. In addition to the Kindle and Kindle Fire, and Nook can also make your iPhone4/4S or iPad 2 look like the familiar blue police call box.

These skin covers were created by Etsy seller stickitskins and they’ve got a number of other cool designs as well.

Ladies, how’d you like it if there was a beauty treatment which promised to reduce wrinkles, redness, scars and acne, all without any fancy dermatologists involved. How would you feel if I told you you had to wear a mask that made you look like Jason from Friday the 13th in order to reap such rewards?

Well ask, and you shall receive, courtesy of the “Magic LED Beauty Mask.” This ridiculous looking contraption claims to work all sorts of wonders for your skin in 7 to 21 days just by pounding the crap out of it with bright red LEDs. Supposedly, it does this by encouraging collagen and elastin regeneration by “stimulating fibroblast activity.” It all sounds like it’s grounded vaguely in medical science, but I still have my doubts. Here’s a quick instruction diagram, in case you’re curious how it works:

Sold? I thought so. Now, I know there are legitimate dermatological procedures which use lasers to treat skin problems, but this just seems like some sort of “wonder cure” which is more likely to give you a headache than to actually do anything for your skin. I suppose if it doesn’t work, at least you’ll have a cool mask for Halloween next year.

If you’re really keen on trying this thing, you can order a caseload of them wholesale over at Made-in-China, or if you just want a single one, Focalprice is retailing them for $199 (USD). Or, you could just buy a couple of these and strap them to a hockey mask.

There are a bunch of gaming geeks out there that really like Minecraft, with its blocky game play and immense level-editing freedom. If you are among those fans of the game and happen to need a new smartphone, you need to hit up eBay while this auction is going on. The auction is for a special Minecraft-edition smartphone.

The smartphone itself is a new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and it has pixelated Minecraft blocks all over the front and back of phone thanks to custom graphics along with the Minecraft logo. The screen of the phone also has Minecraft wallpaper too that matches up with the graphics on the back and side for full coverage with pixel block graphics.

The phone is a special edition being auctioned off for charity by Mojang, creators of the game. Whatever the smartphone sells for will be donated to charity. When I wrote this the bid amount was up to $1,350 (USD) with five days left to go.

There’s a new process called EES (Electrical Epidermal System) which allows scientists to apply circuits and electrical components directly to skin, which could be big news for medical sensors, but it could also potentially lead to LED tattoos, integrated video game interfaces and more.

Engineers John Rogers and Todd Coleman have developed this tech. EES has electrodes capable of measuring brain, heart, and muscle activity, just like an EEG. It can then transmit this data wirelessly. The circuits stick to skin because they are extremely thin, and will adhere thanks to molecular forces. These circuits have been integrated without any pain, suffering or surgery, which is pretty cool. The circuits are applied just like a temporary tattoo. The wires of the circuits are elastic, so they can move about without breaking.

Soon, you will be able to integrate transistors, LEDs, photodetectors, RFID tags, capacitors and more onto your skin. Once these circuits get sophisticated enough, it could make interfacing with computers and our other electronic gadgets a lot different than how we do today.

If you’re wondering how long it will take for Apple or Lucas to demand that this be yanked from Society6, then it might already be too late as I have trouble finding it on their site. Nevertheless, it was an interesting mashup between two cultural phenomena for the short time it was available for sale.

If you really wanted this for your iPhone, too bad. But you can take comfort in all of the other iPhone skins that are available over at Society6, including some pretty cool Star Wars-themed ones. Liam Brazer’s pixel Darth Vader and Stormtrooper skins are very distinctive.

I am a modder by nature. I don’t like my stuff to look like anyone else’s. I like my computers to be customized, my car is far from stock, and I’d mod my house if the tools in the homeowners association would allow it. Pentax has a new digital camera that is perfect for those like me that want their gear to be a bit different.

The camera is the second generation Pentax Optio RS1500. The little camera is small at about the size of a credit card (but much thicker) and it has easy to swap lens ring snaps. It ships with a black ring and an orange ring. The cool part is that the skin on the front of the camera is customizable as well. The camera ships with ten different skins, and you can create and share skins on the Pentax RS site too.

Other than being customizable the camera has a 14MP image sensor, 3-inch rear LCD, and a 4x optical zoom lens. The camera will ship this April for $149.95 (USD).

Like almost everyone in the US, you’re probably anticipating the new CDMA-enabled iPhone from Verizon so you can finally ditch AT&T’s awful network. Once it’s available and you’ve switched to a new network and new iPhone, you don’t have to throw your old AT&T iPhone 4 away. Instead, you can just get a nifty skin to turn it into something else cool.

This skin from SmallWorks comes in clear, white, or black for $20. It’s called the BrickCase4 and will let you attach LEGO bricks to your iPhone 4.

While it’s not an official LEGO product, it’s compatible with all their millions of bricks. Sounds cool, but if you don’t want kids using your iPhone while they are making their latest masterpiece, best keep the case to yourself.

Are you planning on spending a couple of grand on installing home automation systems in your house? Then you should most definitely look at these cool Star Trek-themed screens and interfaces that were recently created by Pascal.

This is basically a custom LCARS UI skin for Windows XP, which is the OS that is used to run his intelligent home. He uses it for his calendar, train schedules, a shopping list, browsing the internet and consuming media.

If you want something similar, prepare to be disappointed! Pascal says his skin is programmed specifically for the hardware that he is using in his house, so it’s really unsuitable for general use.

I once knew a guy that had been in a fire that burned his hands and arms badly. He had to get skin grafts that left him with scars elsewhere on the body to replace the skin that burned on his arms. Those skin graft areas gave his as much pain and trouble as the actual burns did.

A group of researchers at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine has developed new tech that is described as being similar to an ink jet printer that is able to print skin directly onto a wound (Opens PDF doc). The printer sprays a combination of skin cells, collagen, and blood coagulants onto the wound that form skin once mixed at the print head. Naturally, the wound still has to heal, but the hope is that the printer tech could one day replace the need for skin grafts.

Once perfected, the process could be used to treat soldiers with injuries on the battlefield.

This innovative technology can be rolled out onto any non-metal surface to transform it into a touchscreen.

Created by Displax, Skin is paper-thin and flexible, and when applied, can detect up to 16 finger touches at once. Skin is ideal for application onto glass or other hard, flat surfaces, and can even detect somebody blowing on the surface. Skin’s polymer surface is embedded with nanowires, which can detect the precise location of a touch, and even the direction of air flow over the wires.

As an added bonus, Skin can detect touches through surfaces up to 17mm thick, so it can be placed behind a pane of glass so as not to risk damage to the touchscreen itself.

Displax Skin is available in just about any size you can imagine, and connects to a computer using either a USB or serial connection. It sure looks like this stuff could provide for some really awesome interactive displays, especially when combined with projected images.

An XDA member named My_Name_Is_Neo wrapped a Nexus One in this custom carbon fiber style skin. The skin is 3M carbon fiber vinyl and it took some time and patience – but not a lot of money – to get this done. In fact, it cost him $8 in total.

He bought a Best Skins phone cover to use as a stencil and cut out the vinyl of that skin with an X-Acto knife. It not only looks cool but will most definitely protect the phone against scratches and spills.

CMU researcher Chris Harrison’s Skinput is an amazing new technology. It’s a new interface concept that just makes sense, and to top it off, it’s also pretty darn cool. Input devices haven’t changed much in the last few decades. We still use mice and we still use keyboards. If Harrison has his way, we might just someday be using our own skin as an input device.

Harrison’s concept uses the body to sense touch inputs. When a particular part of the body is tapped, a sensor on the upper arm can detect where exactly the tap originated from, either the fingertips or the forearm. This is done by sensing the vibrations that are generated by each tap.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Once this is paired with a projector, you’ve got a whole new input device: your own body.

Skinput is set to be presented at a conference in April.

I don’t really know how this works, but my girlfriend and the Web tell me that blasting your face with steam is good for your skin. If you’re a believer, then you should check out Panasonic’s Nano-Care Ion Steamer, which “creates ion steam particles that are extremely small, thereby enabling the moisturizing steam to deeply penetrate the outer layers of a user’s skin.” Ion steam particles? Sounds like one of Iron Man’s weapons to me.

The Nano-Care Ion Steamer can generate up to 12mL of steam per minute. Curiously, the device can also generate the exact opposite, a “cooling mist”. If neither of them are bad… plain old room temperature water must be harmful to our skin then! To think that I’ve been taking a bath using that stuff!

You can order a Nano-Care Ion Steamer at GeekStuff4U for $416 (USD). Or you can just boil water in a pot. Just kidding.

This handmade leather case comes to us courtesy of London UK artist Tovicorrie of Beautiful Skin. Each one is imprinted with a retro image of Sony’s classic cassette player, layered onto either a soft brown or burgundy red cowhide, and in orange, blue, brown or hot pink Walkman colors. Note the tape that’s in the player is AC/DC’s “For Those About to Rock” – a nice touch – unless the thought of Angus Young strutting around the stage disgusts you.

In addition to iPhone cases, he’ll also make iPod Classic or iPod Touch versions if you specify that when you order. They’re available over on his Etsy shop for $28 (USD) each. Tovicorrie – we salute you!

While some of us love the clean minimal design of our iPhones, I’m sure some of you guys would prefer to give your gadgets a little more personal flair. If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, these metal gadget skins might do the trick.

Made by SGP, these metal skins are made of a wafer-thin layer of nickel or 24K gold-plate sealed with an anti-rust coating. Each set of self-stick metal decals for the iPhone and iPod Touch comes with not only a precision cut face plate, many come with a matching metallic accent ring you can stick around the Apple on the back.

The skins come in a variety of colors and styles, ranging from sublime to garish. I personally like the cobalt blue designs the most.

As an added bonus for iPhone and iPod Touch owners, SGP includes a bunch of metal icons for you to stick on other things, presumably cut out of the scrap metal that remains from cutting out the hole for the screen.

And just because you don’t have an iPhone, you don’t have to feel left out of the metal mayhem. SGP makes metal skins for a variety of other electronic gadgets ranging from cell phones to media players to digital cameras. (They also make some really cool wood, leather and carbon fiber skins for laptops.)

Prices for the metal skin kits range from $15 to $25 (USD) depending on the size and complexity of the decals. They’re all available over at the SGP Store.

(FYI – SGP warns that their metal skins are razor-sharp, so you’ll want to read the instructions and use care when applying them, otherwise you might end up with something a whole lot nastier than a paper cut.)

If you can’t keep your apple-shift-Ls straight from your apple-shift-Ps then these performance-enhancing keyboard shortcut skins might be just the thing for you. Designed for use with Macs in Photoshop, Aperture, and more, these skins are like the Cliff’s Notes for the modern era.

I know- you thought you would have memorized every keyboard shortcut by now. Don’t feel bad, a lot of folks need a little boost to optimize their Photoshop prowess or their Final Cut finesse.

The skins are washable rubber, so there’s no need to fear your frappuccino during an all-night editing binge. They’re color-coded by function and easy to take off and put on. Their kicky colors are also, in my opinion, far more aesthetically pleasing than the once-white but now grimy Mac keyboard on which I am typing right now.

Buy them at PhotoJoJo. They’ll set you back $30 for laptop models, $40 for desktop models. They offer shortcut skins for Photoshop, Aperture 1.5, Final Cut Pro/Express, Pro Tools, and After Effects. They’re compatible with black and white Macbooks, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, the Classic Apple Keyboard and the Apple Thin Keyboards.

Here’s a fun iPhone hack you’ll either really love or really hate. VistaPerfection 2.0 is a complete re-skinning kit for Apple’s wonderphone that lets it masquerade as a Windows Vista machine.

While many of you will ask: why the heck would you want to go and do that? Dunno. Maybe Spec Works (the guy who made it) just wanted to prove it could be done.

The install comes complete with wallpapers, sliders, sound effects and over 90 Vista-themed icons for everything from the computer to the recycle bin, and all of the standard iPhone apps too. There’s even a simulated version of Vista’s Sidebar and familiar Start menu.

If you’re ready and willing to deface your glorious chrome and glass iPhone with Microsoft’s bloatware user interface, head on over to ModMyiFone for the full download and instructions. (Requires a Jailbroken iPhone, SSH access and SummerBoard).

Thompson’s $14.95 Gelaskins Steampunk vinyl skin features an alernative take on the high-tech inner-workings of your schmancy new iPod, and replaces them with gears, springs and levers.

The way my old 3G iPod used to act up all the time, I’m actually wondering if that’s what it really did look like on the inside. Actually, I think mine was powered by a tiny hamster in a wheel.
