Splash Blue sounds like a Kool-Aid flavor, while Scarlet Red just sounds like a lipstick. These are 320GB PS3 Slim models (CECH-3000B), and you can expect them to hit Japan on November 17. Aside from the new coats of paint, everything under the hood remains the same. Along with the console, you also get a matching Dualshock 3 controller and AV, USB, and power cables with your purchase.

No word on when we might get them here in the states, but if you get sick of waiting, just remember, there’s always the old Krylon spray can option.

If you thought your Xbox 360 Slim was skinny, wait until you get a gander at the latest Xbox 360 laptop from James Terry of Dark Uncle Custom Gaming.

Given the fact that a stock Xbox 360 Slim measures over 3-inches thick, I bet you didn’t think an Xbox 360 could get to be under 2 inches thick – with a monitor attached.

But thanks to some ingenious engineering of a negative air pressure cooling system, there is no fan directly on the CGPU – which really cuts down the height of the system components. Instead, a pair of fans force air out of the sealed case, controlling air flowing over the heat sink. When opened up, you’ll see only a single vent hole, along with small speaker holes and the ring of light power switch.

If you recall, Dark Uncle had made an earlier Xbox 360 portable, which weighed more and at 2.5″ thick was a complete fatty compared to this one. This new model has a 17″ screen, and weighs just 8 lbs. Case dimensions of this one when closed are 14 3/4″ wide by 10 3/4″ deep by 1.985″ thick.

You’ll note that the laptop has intelligently placed controls, all on the front of the system, along with a headphone jack. The portable has left the original Xbox Slim mobo largely intact, although he did have to cut down to just two USB ports and eliminate the IR input. All the A/V outputs are there, as well as the Kinect port. Check out this super-sexy Xbox 360 Slim laptop in the video clip below:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I didn’t realize just how slim the system really is, until I saw it next to the HP laptop in the video below:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If you want to get your hands on this sexy system, you’re in luck – as it’s up for sale on eBay now (with a starting bid of $1650 USD). And if for some reason, you miss out, Dark Uncle is also working on two more units for sale, one with a 17″, and another with a beefy 18.4″ screen. Delivery time for those ones is less than a month, and you can also order them red, blue, white, dark grey or black finishes.

To be honest, these USB flash drives from Victorinox Swiss Army do look quite fetching. One thing’s for sure, you won’t get in trouble with taking these on a plane since they don’t include any blades.

These models were announced at CES earlier this year and are finally shipping. They are waterproof and shock-resistant, and also offer USB data encryption. The Slim and Slim Duo come in sizes of 4GB to 128GB and cost between $39.99 to $349.99 (USD) at the Swiss Knife Shop. The Slim Duo basically offers two thin USB drives in the same compact form.

With the ever-expanding size of USB flash drives, these look interesting, although they appear to slightly bigger than I’d expect (they’re actually the same size as typical USB flash drives, but most of my own are a lot smaller). However, this will make them harder to lose, which is good especially if you just shelled out $350 for the 128GB one.

Let me get this bit about me out into the open: I love calculators. I’m obsessed with them, especially scientific calculators. I blame my fixation on these calculators on Chemical Engineering, the course I took up in college. Time is of the essence, and the better the calculator, the more time I would be able to save, during seat works and during exams.

I was probably one out of the three students in my class who would carry two different models of scientific calculators at all times. You know, for emergencies.

Anyway, Kokuyo’s X-ViZ calculator isn’t really a scientific one but nonetheless, it’s a calculator that I definitely want to add to my collection. (My current count is at 11. I know, too many, right? I probably have more calculators than I’ll ever need or use in my lifetime which is why I’m thinking of passing them on to other people who need them…)

These sleek and ultra slim calculators just tickle my fancy. The unique thing about them is that they were meant to be used with one hand only. You know, like when you switch channels on your TV remote or compose an SMS message on your mobile phone.

The Kokuyo X-ViZ calculator was the brainchild of robot designer Tatsuya Matsui. It will be made available in Japan on May 11 for appx. $64 (USD). To order one for yourself, you should check out Japan-based shopping service Rinkya or Flutterscape.

At today’s E3 press conference, Microsoft lifted the covers on their greatly-anticipated update to the Xbox 360′s hardware. It’s not called the Xbox 360 Slim as anticipated, rather simple “The New Xbox 360″.

The New Xbox 360 features a smaller case then previous models (it was actually hiding inside an original Xbox 360 case before its reveal today). The new model has a sleek black case, with angular lines more reminiscent of the original Xbox than the 360.

Under the hood, the cooling system has been improved, providing “whisper-quiet” operation. In addition, the hard drive has been amped up to 250GB, and there’s built in 802.11n Wi-Fi (thank god!).

Best of all, the new console will sell for $299 (USD), the same price as the old Elite. Microsoft plans on shipping the New Xbox 360 to retailers starting today (6/14/2010) in North America, so you should be able to pick one up to enjoy this weekend.

Engadget also got their hands on this quick stats sheet in case you’re into those sort of things:

UPDATE: Pre-orders are now open on Amazon (under the old $299 “Elite” SKU).

I’m really digging the svelte looks of the newly announced Toshiba Camileo S20 camcorder. Not only does the compact video camera feature a super-slim 17mm thick body, it can capture high-definition video in glorious 1080p (1920 x 1280) resolution.

A rotating 3″ display folds flat onto the side of the camcorder when not in use, and all video is stored on an SDHC card to keep things really down to size. The Camileo S20 offers a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor, and while it doesn’t have any optical zoom, its 4x digital zoom should get the job done for basic home video needs. The camera also sports an HDMI output, and a YouTube quick key for one-touch uploads to the ubiquitous video site.

No word yet on a release date, but the MSRP for the S20 is £119.99 (about $195 USD), which makes it just a comparable in price to the 720p Flip Mino HD.

Thinking of buying a Playstation 3? Heard some rumors about the inevitable slim version coming sooner rather than later? Ben Kuchera of Ars Technica kindly rounded up the evidence for your perusal.

I for one, believe in ol’ Ben Franklin’s saying: “Nothing is certain but death and a slimmer version of a Sony video game system. And my eternal fame.” Really, it’s a question of when, not if. And the answer seems to be August 18. (pssst, Ben, you cited Gizmodo but your link leads to Engadget! That’s blasphemy!)

If PS3 Slim rumors were Pokemans, Kuchera’s almost caught ‘em all: everything from their own insider info, to the non-denial of Sony’s director of Hardware Marketing, John Koller, to significant increases in orders for PS3 components. Everything except Engadget‘s alleged leaked shots of the console’s case and box art, which I have just pointed out to you. Because gossip is for geeks too. Check out the article for the rest of the links.

LOOKING FOR THE NEW XBOX 360 SLIM? CHECK IT OUT HERE!

While the original Xbox is nary a memory in most of our minds, it’s still a popular console for hacking together media centers and other homebrew apps. But the old black behemoth of a case sure needs an update. So when I saw this custom Xbox build out, I thought to myself, “that’s just what the doctor ordered”.

Modder Coca627 refactored his original Xbox into what he’s coined the “Xbox Slim”, a lean, mean fighting machine, amped up to the max.

To put it in perspective, the original Xbox measured 12.5″(w) x 4″(h) x 10.5″(d), while the Xbox Slim is just 10.2″(w) x 2.3″(h) x 9″(d), a reduction in volume of 60%. And the Slim weighs in at a svelte 4 pounds, less than half the weight of the ponderous 8.5 pound bulk of the original Xbox.

The Xbox Slim is decked out with a brand spaking new DVD/CD-R slim combo drive, and loaded up with a 2.5″ 60GB hard drive for storage, and built-in Wi-Fi networking. Coca even managed to integrate a hidden receiver for his Logitech wireless controller.

Under the hood, the system managed to slim down thanks to improved cooling, courtesy of a pair of heavy duty Iceberg4 Pro Chip Cooling fans.

The system is modded to run a wide variety of nifty applications including the XBMC media center dashboard and emulators for SNES, Sega Megadrive, NeoGeo and more.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Now if only he could get it to run Xbox 360 games

After much speculation and hype, Apple today announced their new ultra-slim laptop, the MacBook Air. Measuring just 0.16″ to 0.76″ thick (when closed), the 3-pound machine is touted as the “world’s thinnest laptop”.

The new MacBook Air features a striking aluminum case design, and is skinny enough to fit inside of a standard manilla envelope. To put it’s size in perspective, the iPhone is about 0.45″ thick, so the average thickness of the MacBook Air is virtually the same as the iPhone.

In addition to its gorgeous exterior, the Air features a 13.3-inch widescreen (1280×800) display with LED backlighting, which minimizes power consumption, as well as providing an instant-on picture when the lid is opened.

Despite its slim form-factor, the MacBook Air manages to include a full-size keyboard, with solid tactile feedback. What’s super-cool is the fact that the keyboard offers backlighting which automatically turns on in darkened locations. There’s also a huge trackpad that’s the first to offer multi-touch capabilities similar to those found on the iPhone. Apple also managed to squeeze in a built in iSight camera for online video chat sessions.

The system runs on a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo processor, available in either a 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz speeds. In order to cram all those brains into such a tiny body, Apple worked with Intel to shrink the size of the processor by about 60% from previous models. Both models include 2GB of RAM, which does not appear to be expandable at this point.

Battery life is rated at 5 hours, with Wi-Fi active, but in order to keep things thin, the battery is built in and not user-replaceable (let’s hope these batteries last a really long time). Connectivity includes 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), a single USB 2.0 port and a micro-DVI connector for hooking up an external monitor. Apple also left out the DVD drive to help lighten the load. If you must use CDs or DVDs, you can either pick up a $99 external DVD burner (the Air SuperDrive), or mount discs wirelessly from another computer.

Pricing for the MacBook Air starts at $1799 for the base model with a 1.6GHz CPU and an 80GB hard drive. For an additional $1300, you can upgrade to a 1.8GHz CPU and a super-speedy 64GB solid state drive, but the $3098 price tag makes that model cost-prohibitive. Apple is taking pre-orders now, and they should start shipping orders by 1/31/2008.

Sony’s Spring/Summer 2007 product slate was officially announced today, and includes the release of a number of new displays in their popular BRAVIA series. Of particular note are two new ultra-slim rear projector models featuring full 1080p resolution.

The new LCD rear projection micro-displays are the 46-inch KDF-46E3000 and 50-inch KDF-50E3000. They feature a svelte new profile, measuring in at just 12.6 inches deep for the 50-inch model, and 11.9 inches deep for the 46-inch model. Similarly sized LCD and plasma flat-panel displays are around 5 to 6 inches deep without a stand, and around 11 to 13 inches deep with a stand, so these sets take up just about the same amount of space as flat panels if you’re not planning on hanging your display on a wall.

The displays both feature full 1920 x 1080 resolution with full 1080p inputs via HDMI. They support both 1080/60p and 24p frame rates for optimal playback of both high definition broadcasts and film content. The sets also include Sony’s advanced iris control for optimal contrast performance. Both models are compatible with Sony’s new $300 BRAVIA Internet Video Link module, which provides access to IP-based programming via an Ethernet connection.

Both sets are expected to be released this July. Pricing should be available a little closer to the release date.
