Of all fictional weapons, I find the wand to be the least appealing, because it’s a stick. But at the same time it’s really easy to pretend to be a wand-wielding magician, because it’s a stick. If you’ve always wanted to re-enact the wand fight scenes from Harry Potter, check out Incantor, a game that is played with a wand imbued with the magic of Bluetooth.

At its core, Incantor involves players casting a spell to defeat monsters or other players. Spells are cast via gestures made using the wand, which as I said communicates to the smartphone app via Bluetooth. It also has haptic feedback, so your hand will feel how a fireball feels like. Apparently it feels the same as getting a text message.

Another unique and possibly expensive feature of Incantor is that there are different types of wands – some deal direct damage, others heal or give status effects. Perhaps other wands can make wishes come true. If you’re interested, you should check out the Incantor blog for more details on the game’s mechanics. Get back to me if you see something about that wish granting wand.

Developer Movable Code is currently raising funds for Incantor on Kickstarter; a pledge of at least $100(USD) gets you a wand and a copy of the game, which will be available for both iOS and Android devices. Unfortunately, the prospects of the fundraiser reaching its goal of $100,000 seem slim at this point. As of this writing they’ve got 21 days to go and have only raised $7,277.

I’m no marketing wizard but I think it would have helped if they targeted kids instead. Children won’t give a damn about being seen in public waving a wand about, but older gamers might need to cast an invisibility spell beforehand.

I hate messing with wires to charge my smartphone. When I used an iPhone, I had a wireless charging case so I could just plop the iPhone down on a charging base without having to mess with wires. Since I moved to an Android phone, I now have to fiddle with plugging in the cable each night, typically in the dark, and it’s a pain in the butt. Every smartphone I’ve ever owned has needed a cord to charge in the car.

Chrysler Group and Mopar have announced the industry’s first in-vehicle wireless charging option that will come on the 2013 Dodge Dart.

This will be a dealer-installed option costing $199.99(USD) including the case your smartphone needs. It’s not clear what smartphones will work with the system other than the iPhone. Installation itself is an additional charge.

With the wireless charging solution installed, the user just has to place the phone into the bin in front of the gear shifter in the center stack. The phone will then be charged automatically, using induction charging. The only thing I worry about is how much the phone will move around if you’re turning or if you have to brake quickly. Still, I’d definitely like this option in my car.

For a moment, I thought that this might be another concept design, but it isn’t. The Sony SmartWatch is a real product – an Android-powered watch that will allow you to use your smartphone even when it’s sitting in your pocket.

The SmartWatch is compatible with most Sony Xperia phones, as well as some Motorola, HTC and Samsung handsets. The full list of compatible phones is here. The watch connects via Bluetooth to your phone, allows you to accept and reject calls, mute the microphone, access social networking services, watch movies and play music stored on your phone.

The watch face is an 1.3-inch multitouch OLED screen with 128×128 resolution, capable of displaying 65,000 colors. The watch is a little bulkier than most, but not enough to really be a problem, and certainly no bigger than an iPod nano watch. You can also take the face off the strap and clip it almost anywhere.

The SmartWatch ships with a black wristband, but you can swap out colors to pink, mint, grey, white or blue as well. MSRP for the Sony SmartWatch is $149.99(USD), and you should be able to find one over on Amazon now.

Many people have close relationships with their smartphone. They carry it around with them every day, press it to their cheeks at least once every few hours to make a call, and poke or tap at the screen every few minutes or so to check their email, browse the Internet, or read a message.

You should be aware by now that your smartphone has probably accumulated the growth of a ton of bacteria over the course of you using it excessively each and every day. I don’t even want to begin imagining all the microbes and bacteria that’s breeding in between each key on the keypad or around the grooves of its buttons…

Good thing there’s someone out there who wants to come up with a way to “wash” our phones (without getting them wet, of course) with the PhoneSoap.

PhoneSoap is a charger and sanitizer packaged in one neat, little box. It uses to UV-C light to kill any bacteria and viruses that might be living on your phone. The UV-C light is 99.9% effective at killing bacteria and viruses, and since it doesn’t generate any heat, it doesn’t put your phone at risk during its sanitizing cycle. At the same time, it can charge up your device, since the box allows access to both a micro USB cord and Apple’s 30-pin USB cord.

PhoneSoap is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $39(USD) will get you your very own PhoneSoap.

If you own an Android smartphone or tablet, I bet on more than one occasion you have wanted to transfer images, video, or other data between the smartphone and an external device. This new media reader accessory called the Sanwa USB Reader/Dock will help you out.

The device will work on certain Android smartphones running Honeycomb 3.1 and up thanks to the enhanced USB host mode those devices have. It also has the ability to connect USB drives and microSD, SD and miniSD memory cards. The media dock adapter even allows you to plug in a mouse and actually see a pointer on the screen, or you can also plug in a gamepad to control video games. However, it can only supply 100 mA max power to attached peripherals.

At this point, it’s known to work with the Samsung Galaxy II, Sony Xperia NX SO-02D; Sony Xperia acro HD IS12S; Toshiba REGZA Phone T-01D; and Sony S-series tablet, and it’s likely to work with other recent Android gadgets as well.

The Sanwa USB Reader is available direct from Sanwa Japan [JP] for ¥3,280 (~$40 USD). It sure would be great if somebody would make one of these for iOS devices too.

The journal is made to hold your iPhone within, like a case. The cut-outs on each page continue throughout the whole notebook, allowing users to jot down notes and consult their iPhones at the same time.

The notebook is A4-sized and has 176 pages. It kind of reminds me of a Moleskine – except for the odd-shaped hole cut in the middle of each page.

It’s an interesting idea for people who have iPhones, but still like to write with pen and paper.

Have you ever wondered how a gecko is able to climb walls with ease, and hold itself on ceilings? Well, this post will not answer your questions, because my good friend still has $50 on the suction cup theory and I don’t want to burst his bubble. The Grippy Pad uses the technology of lizards to hold all of your items in place! This is great for putting on the dashboard to stop your phone, keys, or other random item from sliding all around the car.

The Grippy Pad uses no velcro, no magnets, just the principles of science! It turns out science can be cool without being explosive! “I think… what we’re seeing here… is going to be dubbed an anomaly in the annals of scientific research.” Yes, it is strange how I’m getting that same feeling that I got when we blew up those pumpkins in the name of science. Write that down.

The Grippy Pad is available in gray, black, white, and red, so you can get one that fits your style. Or if your parents bought you a car from the sixties that has a maroon dashboard, you can add a bit of “the present era” to your vehicle.

This geeky product is also perfect for putting GPS devices on your dash – yes, it’s that strong. Unless you’re going 90 in the dunes of Egypt, nothing is going to fall off of your Grippy Pad.

You can pick one of these up from Firebox for just $11 (USD), or you can stay here with me and have another cup of tea. While you sip on that tea, check out some other cool stuff for your mobile gadgets, like the iLoop Phone Stand and the Siri 3D Printed iPhone Case.

Recently, HTC admitted that they have way too many models, something anyone could have told them, and that their models are too thick compared to what’s available on the market. The new flagship phone, the HTC One X, aims to correct at least one of these problems. The new model will be available April 5th and it packs some solid tech under its hood.

The HTC One X has a slim lightweight polycarbonate body, measuring just 8.9mm thick. It’s got a larger 4.7-inch screen, which has a resolution of 1280×720, which is pretty good. It’s thin and comfortable to hold, and somewhat smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note, which is too big in my opinion. 4.7-inches is a good compromise, allowing you to use functions that you’d reserve for your tablet, while still fitting in your pocket. It comes with a Nvidia quad-core Tegra 3 processor, clocked at 1.5GHz and has 1GB of RAM, running Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0).

The phone comes with a 8MP/1080p camera with an LED flash and a f2.0 lens. It’s also got a 720p front-facing camera for video chats. It also features enhanced Beats Audio. It’s also NFC capable. Surprisingly, it has no microSD card support, but it will come with 32GB of internal storage and 25GB of free storage from DropBox for two years.

After seeing countless movie characters and comic book protagonists with a wristwatch communicator, you’d think that being able to have one in real life is an appealing idea.

Apparently, it’s not. At least not if it’s the size of your iPhone. That much is clear if you look at Dmitry Ostrogorsky’s project up on Kickstarter called the ConnectorR, which isn’t generating much in the way of funds or support (yet?)

The ConnectorR is basically a leather bracelet with a metallic mount, on which you’re supposed to mount your smartphone using double-sided foam stickers. Yes, you read that right: foam stickers. On your phone. But Dmitry recommends that you stick the stickers on a case instead of your actual phone so you can remove it.

If you’re interested in supporting his project, you can head on over to Kickstarter to back it. Those who pledge a minimum of $29 or more will get a complete wrist package that includes the Die Cast ConnectorR with custom made, genuine leather wristband. Higher pledges will get you upgrades like additional mounts for your belt or an armband, or a special red version of the ConnectorR among other bonuses.

If you squint your eyes real hard, it’s sort of like a current day Pip-Boy 3000.

The Acer Cloudmobile was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress and it’s the first phone equipped with the Acer Cloud storage service. It’s meant to allow you to access media and documents stored on users’ home computers, even when the PC is sleeping. All photos taken via the phone are also automatically saved remotely onto your home computer.

The phone itself has a 4.3-inch HD touchscreen, and will run Android 4.1 on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and comes HSPA+3G network ready. The Acer Cloudmobile phone is slated for release in late 2012.

While I can understand the convenience of sat navs, using an existing device like an iPhone or iPad to navigate also makes a lot of sense. The only trouble that I see is that you’ll might end up using your gadget for texting or tweeting, and your car will end up in a ditch. For those of you who don’t foresee this as a problem, then the Satechi SCH-121 Cup Holder Mount is just for you.

The device will work for all sorts of smartphones and 7 to 10-inch tablets. The cradle can rotate 360 degrees, which will allow you to use your gadgets in portrait or landscape mode. Its hinges also move 180 degrees to give you lots of additional flexibility.

On the plus side, it will get your smartphone out of your hands, which is a good thing when you’re driving. On the other hand, it means you might start using your Kindle, Nook, iPad, Playbook or Galaxy Tab to play games or watch movies while driving, which would probably be even more distracting than making a phone call or texting.

If you can resist using this thing for evil, or can insist that its for passenger use only, the Satechi SCH-121 sells for $29.99(USD) over at their website.

With all of the wooden backpanels for iPhones, I guess it was only a matter of time before we saw an entire wooden-hulled smartphone. This one, the ADzero, was designed by Kieron-Scott Woodhouse and it’s kind of cool.

The ADzero is made from bamboo and it will probably be sold in design boutiques, not cell phone stores, since it won’t be mass-produced. The overall weight of this phone is half of an iPhone, despite its larger screen. Woodhouse is a design student at Middlesex University who was contacted by Jerro Lao, a tech entrepreneur after he saw some early concept images of the wooden phone.

The prototype runs Ice Cream Sandwich and will have access to the Android Market. Other than a mention of a built-in ring flash, there’s not much other detail about the specs of the final phone. A production version of the ADZero bamboo phone is expected to be launched in 2012 in both China and the UK. There’s no word on any North American distribution at this point.

When I was about 10 years old, my parents took my brother and I skiing in New Mexico. I remember thinking it was one of the funnest things I’ve ever done, right up until I wiped out and rolled halfway down the slope where I ended up with snow neatly packed into my pants. It wasn’t so much fun after that. I might go back again someday, but I’ll need some assurances that should my leg snap in half for any reason or a giant avalanche come my way, someone can hear my pitiful, girlish screams and come help.

I think the perfect thing to assure that assistance would arrive is these Buhel Speakgoggle G33 Intercom goggles.

The goggles are designed to keep the snow and glare away, and to keep your eyes nice and safe from tree limbs and the flailing ski poles of the people nearby. But the real differentiator in this particular pair goggles is the integrated Bluetooth headset, which pairs with your smartphone so you can answer voice calls and control your music playback.

The cooler feature for me is that even without having a smartphone, these goggles have an intercom function that will allow you to talk to six other people wearing them at the same time. The microphone the goggles have uses bone conduction technology for clear audio even when you’re flying down the slopes.

I think between six people, someone would be able to come and pry me off the tree I ran into.

I can’t decide whether these Koss headphones are just simply retro or retro-futuristically cool. They are collapsible and come with a carrying case for maximum portability. Specs include a generous frequency range of 15-25,000Hz, and a sensitivity of 101 dB SPL at 1mW.

The Japanese do come up with some strange technology.

Sometimes, I call my handbag the “Handbag of Doom.” It’s a huge, spacious tote with numerous side pockets and compartments. While these are normally useful, they turn into side pockets of doom when I happen to be looking for something in a rush–like my ringing phone.

I’ve missed my fair share of important calls while rummaging through my bag, which is both frustrating and annoying. If you’ve gone through similar experiences – not just with bags, but when it comes to missing calls because you’ve misplaced your phone – then the Bondi can help you out.

The Bondi is an adorable little anthropomorphic smartphone hanger. It basically has two arms, two legs, and a hook that resembles the ones you can find on clothes hangers.

You can bend the limbs of the Bondi in any direction you want to. In fact, it’s the Bondi’s arms and legs that make it multi-functional in the first place: it can hug your smartphone in place, reach out so you can hang your keys and other stuff on its arms, and so much more. The Bondi is available in 10 colors and retails for $20 (USD).

Solar energy can be considered “green” energy in the sense that it’s readily available and that it doesn’t release pollutants to be generated. Solar cells and batteries aren’t exactly new technology. There are already a lot of released products and gadgets where the sun is their major (and sometimes, only) power source.

However, the idea of putting your device under the heat of the sweltering sun isn’t very appealing because it might overheat and end up getting fried if you don’t pay attention. A pretty neat solution for taking advantage of solar energy without being out in the elements? The XDModo Solar Charger.

Basically, the charger “catches” solar energy through the window where it’s stuck on, and uses this energy to charge up your device, while it sits safely in an indoor environment, such as an office or even in your car. Of course, there’s no reason you can’t just flip it over and use it outdoors if you want too.

The XDModo charger comes with regular and micro USB outputs, and stores power in its 1400mAh rechargeable lithium battery – which should be good for about a full charge of today’s smartphones. It’s available for purchase online from Design3000 shop for €49.95 (~$66 USD.)

This cell phone designed by Red Dot Design Prize winner Naoto Fukasawa is supposed to combine a candybar-style phone from ’04 with the functionality you’d expect from a modern touchscreen smartphone. I don’t know if this combination will work, but compulsive texters and frequent dialers might appreciate a tactile keypad instead of a touch-based alternative.

The Infobar C01 (JP) looks pretty retro with its checkered keyboard beneath a full touchscreen. It’s powered by Android and measures a disproportionately tall 5.11 inches in height by 2 inches in width and under half an inch in thickness. It weighs 3.7 oz and its 3.2-inch screen has a 854×480 resolution. It has an 8 MP CMOS camera, USB and microSD ports. It’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and IR compatible. Since it’s designed for the Japanese market, it also comes with a digital TV tuner.

The phones will be available in Japan in February 2012 on the KDDI (JP) mobile phone carrier. Even if you do like its looks, it’s doubtful that you’ll ever be able to get one outside of Japan though.

Sony is teasing some mysterious new tech over on Youtube called “Dot Switch.” The tease video shows someone with a Sony Xperia smartphone in hand and a big round dot on the front of the touchscreen. That big dot on the smartphone allows the user in the video to turn on various things in the room.

The video starts with an old record player being turned on with a press of the dot on the smartphone screen, then a Sony TV, and then confetti shooters. The last scene of the video is a robot arm pulling the dome off a tray with what appears to be a square box with a dot on it sitting inside.

Each of the devices that the smartphone turns on has a blue, glowing dot on it as well. What do you think about the tease? What do you think it’s for? Some sort of remote control software and accessories for the Xperia, or something totally different? Guess we’ll have to wait until Sony will give up the official goods on February 21 on this website.
